Plenty of good folk who were Fitzroy supporters as kids are now passionate Saints. We can't all do what we're told.

Pretty good show - without having read the books!
Great to see ol' John Flaus getting a gig as a barfly at the Standard and the Rose.

Agree with rexy, did not think Jack was big enough. Apart from that I enjoyed the show.

Agree with the OP'ers, our lead isn't the right physique for Jack... l guess not an issue for those who haven't read the novels? I also thought Charlie was wrongly cast. The bloke playing him didn't look too healthy, whereas the real Charlie Taub will outlive every other character who appears in the novels.
I see they moved it forward from mid-late 90's into the noughties. Also, shame to shoot up a Jag... in the novels it was a BMW, and I'd be quite happy to see a BMW shot up. But worst of all, come on film makers(!), couldn't you find a Lark? They had Jack in a Studebaker Hawk...? Fair dinkum, how would the Fitzroy Youth Club be expected to clamber into the back of a two-door Hawk when Jack takes them all to the footy???
The Prince of Prussia outside shots were the Napier in Fitzroy, and despite what was said in the Peter Temple interview, the pub's interior looked like the Napier also... if it really was a re-creation, it was damn well done.
It's of course always hard to translate a novel onto the screen. We got a lot of the witty dialogue from the novel, but missed out Jack's thoughts which were so much a part of the novels. Also, I don't think they really managed to get across just how off the rails Jack went after Isabelle's murder.
Despite all the above, I still enjoyed, and am looking forward to the next.

BAD DEBTS: IS THERE ANY OTHER KIND?
Melbourne in winter. Rain. Wind. Pubs. Beer. Sex. Corruption. Murder.
A phone message from ex-client Danny McKillop doesn’t ring any bells for Jack Irish. Life is hard enough without having to dredge up old problems: his beloved football team has moved interstate, the odds on his latest plunge at the track seem far too long and he’s still cooking for one.
But then Danny turns up dead and Jack has to take a walk back into a dark and dangerous past.
BLACK TIDE: IT CAN PULL YOU UNDER
Jack Irish (Guy Pearce) has no shortage of friends, but family members are short in supply. His wife was murdered by an ex-client and his father is a fading photo on the pub’s football wall of fame. So when Des Connors (Ron Jacobson), the last link to his dad, calls to ask for help in the matter of a missing son, Jack is happy to lend a hand.
But sometimes prodigal sons go missing for a reason. As Jack begins to dig, he discovers that Gary Connors (Nicholas Coghlan) was a man with something to hide. And his friends are people with darker and more deadly secrets.
well Charlie was a little ill- the actor has passed away sicne- but they had enough on film to do the second.

Re: Sainbrat, Dave McNamara & bergholt
Finally caught up with Black Tide.
Poor old Charlie Taub looked even sicker. Totally and badly miscast. The bad boys would never have been able to thrash the workshop of the real Charlie Taub!
Still enjoyed it though. Also great that Bad Debt rated so well.
Poor old Charlie Taub looked even sicker. Totally and badly miscast. The bad boys would never have been able to thrash the workshop of the real Charlie Taub!
Still enjoyed it though. Also great that Bad Debt rated so well.
Guy Pearce looks certain to reprise his role as former criminal lawyer Jack Irish in the ABC telemovies of the same name, according to one of the stars of the production.
Marta Dusseldorp, who plays reporter Linda Hillier in Bad Debt and Black Tide opposite Pearce, said another two shows would be made next year.
Jack Irish: Bad Debt, which stars the Emmy award-winning Pearce, premiered on Sunday night and attracted an audience of 950,000 to be the sixth most-watched show of the evening.
The second telemovie in the series, Jack Irish: Black Tide, will screen on Sunday at 8.30pm.
Dusseldorp, who is currently shooting A Place To Call Home for the Seven Network, says appearing in the two Jack Irish telemovies has allowed her to work with some of Australia's best actors.
"They stand alone as movies and it's smart they are movie length," Dusseldorp said.
"Hopefully we are going to shoot another two next year. In fact I know we are.
"There's much more to come."
Dusseldorp's screen career is definitely on the rise.
After more than a decade on stage, the Sydney-based actress and mother of two has stepped away from theatre production to concentrate on television and movie roles and 2012 is proving one of her biggest years yet.
Besides the Jack Irish telemovies, Dusseldorp flew to Bangkok to appear in the yet-to-be-released film The Railway Man, starring Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth.
"(The Railway Man) was shot in Bangkok and it was just a scene, but it was great to be a part of it and to hang out with Colin Firth, he's an interesting man," Dusseldorp said.
"I've basically been in theatre for 14 years and I was never available for any of this stuff but since I have stepped away from that, this has been really rewarding.
"I never did the (television) series stuff because I had the plays to do and now I can't do the plays because I have the series to do."
Dusseldorp had no doubt Jack Irish would be successful after going to a screening at the Melbourne Film Festival in August.
She said the feedback from the audience was overwhelmingly positive and it was great to watch a show made for television with such a big audience.
"Because I am a stage actor I love live reactions," she said.
"They showed it at the Melbourne Film Festival so it was great to see it with an audience of 300 people because it gives you a different and immediate response.
"It's brave, naughty, bold, daring and all those things came across because the audience were laughing and gasping."

The news keeps getting better...
The show reportedly inspired by one of our very own here on SS, and my all time favourite Aussie 'cops, crims and legal types' series..., no stuff it, off the top of my head... my all time favourite Aussie drama series... ev-ah!
Rake is coming back for (at least) a third series. Gotta love the Cleaver.

Rake is coming back for (at least) a third series. Gotta love the Cleaver.
The ABC has commissioned a third season of its hit legal drama Rake. The series, which stars Richard Roxburgh as criminal defence barrister Cleaver Greene, is delivering almost a million viewers weekly, inclusive of seven-day consolidated ratings data. Those numbers represent a lift on the first series and are particularly impressive when you consider most successful commercial dramas are within a few hundred thousand viewers of the million-viewer waterline. Despite reports the show would end after its third season, Roxburgh won't rule out a further series, saying he and the rest of the creative team were open to wherever Rake took them.
