Shane Wakelin back at the Saints

Post: # 1275867Post On the Ball »

Starts today in the newly created role of Commercial Operations Manager. He's obviously got over not getting a game in the 97 GF, however has done the hard yards by playing in 2 losing GF's since then, like a few guys still on our list.

He should go into the draft, probably our best full back option at this stage, he or Max would get a game no problems next year.

Could care less bout his football - more want to know if he has the business credentials for the role - commercial operations manager indicates he has the acumen... Does he?

Not 100% sure what his tertiary qualitifications are. What I do know is that I used to see Shane all the time in the lift at Deloittes. You generally can't get a job at Deloittes if you're a mug.

Ran into Wakes after the drawn GF in 2010! Asked him which team he was supporting! He replied "Pies mate". I promptly booed him after hearing his response! (I was naturally decked out in my Saints gear so he certainly wasn't trying to please me with his response!)

For all those falling over the genius that is Delloites or PwC or any other "management consultant firms" - dealt with them much???

These mobs sure do have some talented people but they are also ALL about self marketing and a high profile ex sportsman in the ranks does business no harm.... could be the general "business" plodder but sometimes that's ok.

I don't know if Wakelin is - assume (have to don't we) the club has done their due diligence but as I mentioned I'm only interested in what commercial acumen he brings to the table.

As for his footy allegiances - he's a Pie man for all I care.

Bit harsh on Shane Wakelin. We dumped him on his arse. I don't really blame him if he is Collingwood more than St.Kilda but there is no doubt that he still would have a very big soft spot for his first football club.

Environmental activism

Wakelin is a strong supporter of sustainable transport, and famously sold his car in 2007 for environmental reasons, using public transport and bicycles as an alternative, even to travel to football matches he was playing in. On 5 June 2012, he took part in a stunt for Melbourne radio station Gold FM's breakfast program which involved a competition to see which mode of transport would get someone from Nunawading railway station to the Gold FM studio in Richmond in the shortest time. Wakelin took the train and won the competition, completing the journey in 41 minutes. The motorist took 49 minutes, with the bike rider taking 53 minutes.

Yeah agree with Tef here, don't care who he 'loves' deep down, more care about his skill set...

It's a bit of a hike.

But I'm sure he'll have his solar powered bicycle with him on the train

Well then you'd know it's - half management consulting and half salesman .... probably a 60/40 split in favour of selling for the next job....and that's always nice if you have high profiles on board.

his business skills are the only thing that matters here. Our club was run by amateurs and blowhards throughout our history, we need skilled wheelers and dealers; if he is then great. Welcome back Shaggs, don't sell our secrets to the pies though please.
