Re: Ray looks set to stay!
I'd have a spot for Ray in our first 22 as a marking mid/HFF type. I think he's better than depth. Glad he's sticking around. Plays like a man proud to be part of the group.
"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

Re: Ray looks set to stay!
Ray has the versatilty (another tick!) to play in many positions... and is therefore quite capable of replacing injured players whether that's in the midfield, backline or forward line - other than the key positions of course.plugger66 wrote: If Milne is out injured we wouldnt be looking at Ray to replace him.

And Ray has kicked how many bags of 3 or more goals in game for you to come to that conclusion. 3 isnt even a bag, its more a purse but I am being generous. If the Saints wer looking a Milne type than Ray would not be considered. If Ray stays why would he play more games than this year especially as it seems he had a pretty good year this year but still only got about 11 games.

Re: Ray looks set to stay!
Maybe he should have got more than 11 games and more game time too ?
In his first year (with the Saints) Ray was given more match time and played every game and he averaged 22 possessions and provided valuable run.
He improved us as a side !!

Re: Ray looks set to stay!
Ray might have to play CHB now that the Brown eagle is off the table.....
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

Yep when we were trying to win a flag and we played our best side every week. Now that we cant win a flag we need to get games into younger guys. Ray is on the edge so he is one of those players that gets dropped. Also a different coach has different ideas on players. SW obviously doesnt rate Ray like RL did.
Re: Ray looks set to stay!
We need to open up spots on the list..... Can't keep em all.
If he ain't in our best 22 at his age, why is he going to be kept??
Trade him
I like him as a player, but the coaches must see it differently

Assume its to do with todays state of play or trade winds saying Dees are still into Ray.FQF wrote:Why?chook23 wrote:Title of thread may need to change.

Re: Ray looks set to stay!
If Melbourne offer us something half decent, sorry but you'd have to trade him. I thought he played well this year in the games he got, but the fact is Watters doesn't see as part of the best 22. He's on the fringe and Watters would rather go with younger guy to deveop than play Ray, which is fair enough. Therefore, if Melbourne offer something valuable, it will benefit St Kilda as we are only losing a depth player and benefit Ray as he is likely to play a full season.

Re: Ray looks set to stay!
Most likely scenario is that he will be a Demon by the end of the week.
I personally rate him...but he was clearly on the outer with the coaches.
A lot will depend on who we want from the Dees list, that they are willing to offer up, as their trade picks do not look that tempting. In our favour is that Ray is contracted to us.
Our pursuit of Hickey and Brown may alter things for if they do not land it would make Martin more attractive as a back up if nothing else.
From my perspective ray is a first 22 player, and should rate one in return. But how desperate are the Dees for him? He would bea great pick up for them goven their list.

Re: Ray looks set to stay!
I would say that as a guy who has played that link between midfield and defence that Goddards spot might open up a space for him. If he plays that is where I see his role being. He might get a few more games depending on who we recruit.
Re: Ray looks set to stay!
Martin, Frawley (somehow), Gysberts and a pick late upgrade, cant see what else we'd want. I really don't know what else we'd want for him, a pick not in the 30s is a wasted trade I reckon.

This isn't Supercoach, we don't have limited trades. There'll be plenty of reasonable players go for picks of 40+.St Ick wrote:Martin, Frawley (somehow), Gysberts and a pick late upgrade, cant see what else we'd want. 2011: Tory Dickson, Lachie Neale, Jordan Murdoch.
2010: Luke Parker, Alex Fasolo, Tom McDonald, Alex Johnson, Paul Puopolo, Nick Duigan, Arryn Siposs.
2009: Allen Christensen, Nathan Vardy, Sam Shaw, Ben Stratton, Ryan Harwood, Dylan Roberton, Ben Sinclair, Lukas Markovic.
2008: Mitch Robinson, Todd Banfield, Liam Anthony, Rory Sloane, Rhys Stanley, Taylor Hunt, Aaron Cornelius, Shane Savage
In fact, I seem to remember that if you do the numbers, all of the brackets above the top 20 or so work out about as well as each other. Even if we only got 49 for Ray, I reckon that would be a reasonable way to free up salary cap space and a spot on the list, especially given the rookie promotions which may have to occur.

Re: Ray looks set to stay!
Melbourne pick cupboard is very thin.
Could only see this happening for a player swap unless a 3rd club becomes involved.
Martin the only realistic player they have which they would give up and would help us.

Re: Ray looks set to stay!
The Demons will give him more game time as well as play him every game- so it wouldn't surprise to see him average 25 possessions per game for them (if he ends up there), as well as provide them with plenty of run (something we could use ourselves).

And just think......... the lad was an ardent Saint supporter, I think in the article I read about him that Nathan Burke was his favourite Saints player.............. Sloane has that real Burkey endeavour about him in his play.
Re: Ray looks set to stay!
I'm pretty sure he went through a whole draft without being picked up as an underager... imagine that!rexy wrote:Rory Sloane 40+
