Where we can improve in 2013
I've been looking at the team stats for 2012 from the Superfooty site trying to pinpoint what could have been better in 2012.
It appears there are two areas that if addressed could give us an instant boost. Other indicators show us higher than where we finished so these two deficient areas are worth scrutiny.
1. Scoring inside 50 is only 38% and 12th best in the league. However our inside 50 is 2nd best. So we don't do as well as we should with it once is in there.
Our goals vs points are 345.277 which looks o.k compared to the accuracy of teams above us on the ladder.
So accuracy is not the problem. We don't appear to make best of the opportunities coming into the forward 50.
How can this be improved ? We have Saad in there which has improved this but yet we are still lagging.Possibly a Key position forward that is very lively like Tom Lee and Rhys Stanley may help. For some time now we have been crying out for another very dangerous option other than Roo.
2. Points against could be improved. This one was more obvious as most of us realise we needed a key backman to help out down there. Hopefully this trade/draft period may help this issue.
The good points look very encouraging. Contested possesions, clearances and inside 50s all surprised me we were that good.
We also won 53 quarters and lost 35 which should have given us a better result than 9th on the ladder.
Plenty to be upbeat about for the supporters.
Keep the faith !

Re: Where we can improve in 2013
As much as a lot of fans believe we will continue to slide down the ladder, I suspect Watters and Co. believe rectifying our key back deficiencies and ruck depth will see us move up the ladder and play finals again. And who knows what we'll be like in our second year under Watters. We might naturally improve dramatically. Simple as that, in terms of improving IMO.

Re: Where we can improve in 2013
I am pleasantly surprised to see that our inside 50's so high…
I think we probably fall down converting that into more scores because we aren't forcing enough turnovers which is just vital these days, I don't have a stats but I am sure a huge percentage of goals come from turnovers these days.
Saad was awesome at applying pressure, but apart from that our tackles inside 50 would be down I'm guessing? Kosi & Roo offer little here and even Milne & Schneider have never been huge in this area… Hopefully Lee and Stanley can not only take a few contested marks, but also contribute to a menacing forward pressure with their pace. Can Milera add some condition and become a starting 22?
Key back is the most obvious void as we don't really have a single Full Back on the list.

Re: Where we can improve in 2013
There's inside 50's and there's quality inside 50's of course.
Inside 50's may be a result of a ball going in and out and then back in again (= 2 inside 50's) - whereas a quality inside 50 goes inside and stays inside and gets scored from - so quality = 1 less inside 50, but a much better result !

Re: Where we can improve in 2013
There were a couple of game where if we had a decent key defender we could have won - Against Richmond comes to mind where Riewoldt tore us apart and even against WC where their tall forwards had a field day. Not having a key back certainly played a significant part in us not playing finals IMO. This is why we are so intent on getting Mitch Brown. The club obviously has a lot of faith in him.dragit wrote:I am pleasantly surprised to see that our inside 50's so high…

Re: Where we can improve in 2013
Obviously more height and strength in the backline required, plus we need a bit more from the half forward line next season, but a big worry in a lot of games this season was the slow start by the midfield and then having to play catch up footy, just not enough urgency and this resulted in quick goals early to the opposition, and we did lose a few tight games where we couldn't quite claw back what we gave away.

Re: Where we can improve in 2013
We could do with an improvement in the ruck, mainly for tapouts.
I think this has been masked up until now by having a good midfield for clearances. Once Lenny and Dal retire that deficiency may be further highlighted unless Armo and Jack can step up to the plate.
Hopefully we can get Hickey and he comes along quickly.

Tap outs / Hitouts go nowhere or to 50/50's - 95% of the time . Therefore clearances are mainly (95% of the time) about the clearance players !!howlinwolf wrote:We could do with an improvement in the ruck, mainly for tapouts.

Ruckmen just need to be comptetitive, in the ruck contests, and McEvoy is doing fine in that regard (but if Hickey is good around the ground,- has the potential to develop into a player who can get his 20 possessions around the ground and if he comes cheap - then why not !).

Re: Where we can improve in 2013
Second best for inside 50s and only 12th for efficiency once we go inside 50.
It suggests that we aren't too far off it if we can get another good season out of Riewoldt and help from another genuine key forward who can kick goals.
Lee is the big hope here and there is also Wilkes, who put in some creditable performances towards the end of the season.
Forward efficiency has been a problem for a number of years but it seems we are heading in the right direction with the addition of Lee.

Re: Where we can improve in 2013
I think the way collingwood played with a very defensive forward line that peppered the goal while guarding space for the ball coming out needs mobile forward and wingers that get time on the ball is what we will end up with in a couple of years. Scott is forced somewhat to play Roo but Kosi had better hope he can have a big year because he needs to add to the goal scoring and contested marking or will struggle for games. Lee will help and a couple of more kids taking the next step also should help.
