As part of a considered and deliberate restructure, the Club is now applying greater focus on High Altitude Training as well as other new initiatives such as blood analysis and sleep programs.

“We are extremely pleased to be able to restructure our High Performance Department to add expertise in critical areas of physical preparation ,” Head of Football, Chris Pelchen said.

“St Kilda is applying greater focus on High Altitude training in 2013 which will start with a pre-season training camp in Colorado, USA in November.”

St Kilda’s High Performance Department has been bolstered with the appointment of staff from a variety of backgrounds, including AFL Football, Australian triathlon, Olympic cycling and the NRL’s 2012 Premiership side, Melbourne Storm.

After spending several years with the Storm, Simon Kearney will take up the role of Sports Science Manager alongside Luke Vella who has been appointed as the Saints new Exercise Physiologist having transferred from the Malaysian Olympic Cycling team.

The pair joins former Triathlon Australia Head Coach and Western Bulldogs Physical Conditioning Manager, Bill Daveron, who will head the department as High Performance Manager while Josh Low continues in the role of Strength and Conditioning Manager.

Are we doing collingwood "high" altitude training. Stilnox slurpies before bed and light blood doping within limits?

hehehe, light blood doping, talking with a current AFL footballer who shall remain nameless I brought up the blood doping and he told me it has stopped now but was happening up until a couple years ago.

ALL this fancy stuff is OK , but no substitute for good foot skills.
Hope the gimmicks don't distract those in charge from the real core areas that need fixing.
Sort of like worrying about the strawberries or passionfruit on the cake at the expense of not using the right flour!

It is an "arms race".

However in this case we are just playing catch-up with the leading clubs as they are already doing it. So all we are seeking to do is to minimise the advantage that other clubs have on us, rather than to gain an advantage. Unless we become good enough to leap-frog.
