When would BJ have qualified for the veterans list?

Post: # 1268339Post markp »

If we'd given him a four year deal would he have qualified in the third or fourth year?

Under the Vet list rules, the player has to be aged 30 at September of the season listed AND have been listed for 10 years.

BJ was born May 1985 and next year is turning 28 (Year 1). So would not be eligible in 2014. Would be in 2015.

This wouldn't have fixed the problem - wasn't just about salary cap $$$ but setting a precedent to all players.

Veteran Players

Under AFL player rules, each club may nominate or list any number of what are called Veteran Player’s.

In order to be eligible for classification as a Veteran a player must have been the age of 30 as at September 30 in the relevant AFL season and be on the primary list of the AFL club for at least 10 years or in the case of Port Adelaide since the inception of the club.

If he debuted in 2003, and turns 30 in may of year 3 (2014), wouldn't that mean he'd be 30 as at sept 30 2014, and therefore eligible that year?

I would think that that's a free kick from the system, which should be reaped and exploited whenever possible.

That's $100k of his pay extra on our SC.... well, would've been.

Depends which veterans rule we choose, the old one was 2 players over 30 plus over 10 years on the list (half wage outside cap), the new rule is as many players as you wish that have been on the list for 10 years (100,000 off every player eligible)… So BJ would have fit into that seconed one

Honestly I think it came down to a combination of money + our ability to get compensation. We have been middle of the road with BJ for last 2 years. If he plays out career with saints and then retires we get nothing for him. We let him go now and we get a pick for him.

As a medium size team in the free agency world I think that is going to be our modus operandi going forward. We can't afford to overpay. We need to take value when we can get it and let it go when it gets too expensive. It sucks but it's the byproduct of the era we are entering into. We need to adapt to a role and survive.

So we wanted to keep him or we wanted the compo pick? Cant really be both, can it?

It'a more than a shame to think we wont get to exploit the veterans list loophole/incentive... could've offered him $550k - 600k x 4, knowing year 3 and 4 would only cost us $450k - 500k of the SC.
