Re: Goddard to Essendon
Quite simply even with Goddard in the team and almost singlehandedly dragging us over the line (apologies to Lenny) we couldn't win a flag.
FACE IT.
THE FLAG WITH THIS CURRENT MOB IS GONE.
has been from the moment the siren went in the drawn GF 2 yeaqrs ago.
Watters has started the process of regeneration. has openly said will be aggressive for the next 12-24 months in getting the Saints back to top four.
bj is gone, move on. Soon Roo, Dal, Joey, Fisher, and Lenny will be gone.
We HAVE to regenerate. We have to churn the players.
We won half a game more than last year and finsished TWO games out of the finals. Football has changed and unless we change we will be loike the Bulldogs and Melbourne.
The compromised draft has brought in a changed football recruiting landscape. You dont just get kids and wait like we did in the early 2000's. You go after dissaffected Suns and GWS players who havw had some experience. You go after mature aged players like Saad and Milera.
Free Agency just adds to the new landscape. Losing bj is not the disaster it used to be, especially if you realise we are no chance of a flag in the near future.
As for loyalty. That is for the fans, not players or coaches.
bj was a gift from Carlton, one that almost got us a flag. But now it is time to move forward and look at our next challenge for a flag and it means some pain and gnashing of teeth as good players like bj move clubs.
Sad but true.

Lance or James??

Pelchen is going to have to earn his money. He got some great players into the Hawks without breaking the bank, i trust his ability to regenerate with little outlay and with cohesive planning.

Fair enough, I just think there's enough left in us to challenge in the next couple of years.plugger66 wrote:maverick wrote:The saints are in the business of selling hope.
They are not doing a good job.
I reckon 50% of people on here are seeing the idea of a another first round pick as hope. Most of those people probably dont see us winning a flag in the next few years. The ones upset with BJ leaving probably think we can win a flag in the next few years. No one is wrong.
I am not sure why Lenny, roo & chips stay, it must be demoralising for them.

I think the days of the pyramid salary structure at saints (at least as lop sided as it had been) are over.
Re: Goddard to Essendon
window was shut after GF2. keeping goddard makes no difference in the short term. it will threaten our next challenge though. his inflated pay packet will make it tough for us to hold onto future talent.
Re: Goddard to Essendon
Spot on.matrix wrote:they stay because they are loyal
simple as that i reckon
Hayes nor Monty would not have even looked at offers from other clubs. They finished 1 and 2 in the B&F and I reckon Goddard's offer from us trump what they signed for.
Goddard saw a cash cow opportunity, whether it be driving up his price with us or becoming a FA. He's played the new system of FA to a T.
Re: Goddard to Essendon
That's an assumption...
What if he is genuinely upset about something...what if the club has done wrong here?
Anyway, who knows what Joey is on, he may very well be second highest paid as we speak and BJ's offer may be under that?

Re: Goddard to Essendon
What a load of crap ... Loyalty it a two way street if BJ got hit by a car tomorrow and he lost the ability to kick over 30m you watch the club kick him to the curb ... Loyalty is a fairytail that needs two factors to happen 1. The player stays in form and 2. The club pay the perceived value for the player ... Ask jaryd Allen what loyalty gets you ...

Re: Goddard to Essendon
so lenny and nick live in fairy tales?
what utter rubbish
im pretty sure that if lenny hayes lost the ability to sidestep and kick the cherry he would not be kicked to the kerb
im like to think he would be offered another important role at the club so he could still be part of the next premiership tilt
you earn loyalty
blokes like hayes and nick have earned it
bj was well on his way to seriously earning it imo
f*** him
if he wants to go nothing i can do or care about that will change his mind
in fact
ive done a 180
if he does not want to be part of this club, stick his hand up for a leader and show some true f****** loyalty like lenny hayes then he can go
i wish him no luck whatsoever at his new club
if he decides he wants to stay and be part of the next crack at the flag with our youth then good on him
but i very much doubt that will happen
cheers bj
thanks for the efforts

Re: Goddard to Essendon
yup
sorry K
i know we've chatted about this elsewhere but im over it now
if he wants to go then he doesnt want to be here
if he doesnt want to be here then i dont want him
you dont put in 100% effort if you dont want to be somewhere
i would not abuse him if i saw him in the street and i would not call him a traitor
he had a crack for us, a big crack at the big time
we didnt quite get there
if he now wants to go for more cash or one more year on a contract then go
ill look forward to seeing some ripping youth we have coming thru
but
it would not surprise me in the slightest if there was some underlying reason why he left, with someone at the club or something
after all
it is st kilda
thanks bj
memories were great, and all the shite i have stored away of you will now stay just where it is, stored away
wish you all the best, but no premiership
thats ours
not yours

I am just painting the other side where the grass isn't always a nice shade of green.
I just can't get excited about letting someone like BJ go for an unknown quantity.

Re: Goddard to Essendon
i totally see your point K i really do
i think you know i do
pelch has a reasonable record
first with port and then the hawks???
his track record says he knows what he is doing and can build lists
whether all the trust was put on to him as one person at port and hawks who knows
losing any player of bj's caliber hurts any side in the short term
nothing we can do about it now
if they dont want to offer him more then thats that
but
theres always the possibility that they might
but i seriously now doubt that that will happen
cant wait to see dunnell turn him inside out on the field
i think you know your footy K
i like your posts and often agree with a lot
but
i seriously hope this time
youre wrong
i so hope this does not come back to bite us in the ass

M, I'll pipe down now.
Made my point I think, just want to make sure people fully understand the two sides of his leaving us.
I remain unconvinced that there is not more to it...
Think he was young enough, good enough, to be a part of the next tilt and just don't buy that great footballers are going to flock to the club because we have something so special in this new FA market

Re: Goddard to Essendon
Got a feeling the club are happy to see him go. Let's hope we pick up a superstar with the pick we will get. IMO Sippos is nearly ready to take BJ's role.
