That same source suggested on 3 aw that a trade with visy, I mean Carlton for warnock was on the cards, don't know if that's true, or even possobletweedaletomanning wrote:I am a huge Goddard fan.
I have been told directly from a reliable source ( no name dropping, but is someone that features prominently on a football discussion show that airs on Monday) that he has been offered $500k by the club, and a rival club has offered $750k.
He is really torn at the moment from what I've been told.
I hope he stays, but $250k pa. what would you do?
I love this club

correct BUT they let juddy renew the contract------ although as it is rumoured he's no longer captain- does that mean visy are being shortchanged?

If this is true I would advise bj to go where the money is. EVERY SINGLE DAY OF THE WEEK.
You are retired a long time and you will NEVER get the chance to earn like that again.
Would love him to stay, but FFS lets be realistic about this.
And anyway theres an extra $500k in our SC we can offer in trades etc
Lance or James??

In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

That's what I thought, but maybe it's a case of getting something for him(unlike the Luke ball situation)Con Gorozidis wrote:isnt warnock terrible?Stillwaiting wrote:That same source suggested on 3 aw that a trade with visy, I mean Carlton for warnock was on the cards, don't know if that's true, or even possobletweedaletomanning wrote:I am a huge Goddard fan.

I declared a couple of weeks on the forum that BJ has said all along that he wants to stay at the club and we should have believed them. But right now my gut feeling is that he'll move on - taking too long to commit to the club and as they say, every man has his price....just ask Gaz! Excuse me while I go away and wipe this egg off my face.

He would be earning an extra 50% on our supposed offer. What would anyone else do?
I doubt we would be trading for Warnock either as where does that leave McEvoy?
I get the feeling Bj is staying.
If on the flipside BJ does actually leave. We will have some cash and two first round draft picks to see what we can get.
From this good players will be found.

Warnock is an injury prone cabbage - with a huge salary of his own.
Carlton friends cant believe what they paid/gave up to get him.
Cant blame Goddard for taking the extra cash but Carlton can shove Warnock up jeanie pratts date.

Re: Goddard and saints going to Free agency to decide his va
Bj was great up til 2010, when he was able to play more or less without an opponent, and Lenny and Dal were elite. But now he is having to take on a key role he is appearing to struggle with it.
Especially now Scotty is asking him to play as a true midfielder.
He would have learnt alot from this year imo, and may take the that step in to becoming the clubs no.1 mid, but we're not sure yet, so an offer of $500k is reasonable.
For us he may be able to keep us from bottoming out over the next year or two, and maybe just maybe, with improvement in our youngsters, and a fit older brigade, he may help take us deep into september next year... but right now he's only worth 500 to us.
As for another club who are ready to challenge he could be the icing on the cake, and well worth 750.
IMO money is really important, but if the core group truly believes we can contend in the next year or so he'll stay... if they don't he'll go.
If the Cats hadn't of won one, I don't think Gary would have left...
If he stays it states that the players believe that we're in the hunt in the next couple of years.

It will also depend on whether BJ thinks the club making the offer has a better chance of winning a flag in the next 5 years. If he's really interested in team success there's no point on going to GWS. I'm not sure that Freo's flag prospects are that great either.Leo.J wrote:Bj was great up til 2010, when he was able to play more or less without an opponent, and Lenny and Dal were elite. Isn't assigning arbitrary values to players like playing fantasy accounant? Fun times.plugger66 wrote:I will go with 500k.
I'll be very annoyed if he leaves. I'll be even more annoyed if he leaves over $100K-per or an extra year. BJ's skills and versatility are exceptionally rare, so somebody's going to pay for them. It might as well be us.

Re: Goddard and saints going to Free agency to decide his va
I reckon Goddard will go to the biggest money considering where he is at in his career. He wont play in a premiership at St Kilda as we will need a few years to get the right team together, and he would then be at the end of his AFL career anyway. Might as well go to a cashed-up club like GWS with all the resources at hand, rather than work for less and have to go to the back blocks of Seaford to train in the middle of winter. I don't think he has the inspirational attitude for a captain. It would be good if he stayed though and Watters used him to his best abilities, as we can't let experience and skill walk out the door

Re: Goddard and saints going to Free agency to decide his va
I think Goddard certainly has the inspirational abilities to captain - like Buckly, could he contain his expectations of others when things don't go to plan?
Captaincy could be interesting for Goddard.... sometimes that can force a player to improve his own performance ( knowing he has to lead from the front)..... of course.... can also do opposite.

I also think he would be a great captain but I just dont like the idea of them giving it to him just to keep him, just dont think that should be part of the deal.Teflon wrote:I think Goddard certainly has the inspirational abilities to captain - like Buckly, could he contain his expectations of others when things don't go to plan?

Re: Goddard and saints going to Free agency to decide his va
Captains are a bit more than just skilled players, Roo and Lenny are not as skilled as Goddard, but display a fearless attack on the contest, never-say-die approach, and still throw themselves at the game even if the chips are down, and usually follow up with a positive outcome to inspire others. Goddard took a great mark in the 10 GF and goaled at a crucial time, but he can't live off that glory hasn't really played like his life depended on it over the last couple of years. Guys like Dempster are more captain material IMO. We don't really have many stand-out leaders when you put Roo and Lenny aside. but hopefully some of the younger guys will develop in that area over the next couple of years

Just wondering- if he walks and goes to say, Freo for a better offer do we get any compensation or do we end up with nothing again ( Luke ball)
