Clinton Jones

Post: # 1256443Post cwrcyn »

Since the Collingwood game, Jones has been banished to Sandringham and has not returned to the senior team. This has also occurred to Peake, Polo, and Clarke this season. Is there a possibility that all four won't be in a St Kilda guernsey next year? Personally, I think Jones has some value, even if only as a back up tagger should we get some injuries.

Yes, I'd agree with that assessment of CJ. A valuable part of the squad. As for the others? I think its a case of "thanks guys, all the very best for the future" We saw the new guard coming into the picture last saturday, given a reasonable run with injuries etc, we have the makings of a very VERY good side!

Watters made reference to players' skill levels a few weeks ago. About the time of CJ's last game. A lot of us guessed CJ and Raph were in the gun. Cannot question their ticker and work ethic, they put in 110 % every week, but...

If we are going to improve, CJ will be one of the first to go. It is a shame that nobody has been able to do anything about his disposal.

Thanks for everything CJ, super clubman, gave it everything, but we need to move forward even if it means going slightly back in the short-term.

I just don't think we can continue to have one of our midfield spots taken by a player who can't kick, or hasn't got the confidence to run and kick forwards…

We need to start assimilating our young mids while the older stars are still in the side, Ross, Ledger, Curren & Newnes will learn so much just from playing with Lenny, Dal & Joey.

Arguments can be made for a few players like CJ on the basis we need backups. And of course we do.

However if the club is going to upgrade a few Rookies, and have a few picks in a supposedly strong Draft, they'll have no option other than to cut deep.

If it's not to be one of those players who we rate as insurance then it's gonna have to be someone else - they can't all stay.

Don't think that will fly…

I doubt Ross will want him, but even if he does, he probably knows that no-one else will, they would just take him late in the draft like they did Dawson…

Improve his kicking and he will make it back in. If he doesn't, not looking good for him.....

Clint will be 29 next year, I'd like to think a team could turn him into an inside mid that could dish it off....he is actually a very good ball winner/contested footy player.

No chance of that happening now. Jones has served us well but his time is up.

You cant dispose of the ball - you are gone.

Ray and Gilbert, be very afraid as well.

That's why the rumoured trades are so bizarre.

BJ and Dal are the names that keep on surfacing.

Two of our best ball users.

Well I suppose that's why they are being mentioned.

As elite players they would attract the best trade price and offer the most salary cap relief.

Not saying I agree with trading them; just saying that would be why they would even be considering it.

Welcome to him tbh - reality is he isn't going to take us fwd and with Gilbert/Geary and one or 2 others you just can't keep carrying that many in the side ordinary by foot.

Time for Leger and others who at the least should be an improvement on Jones

As someone may have previously suggested; End of an Era?

Or the start of a new one if you're a Freo fan...

Let's hope it's littered with poor decision makers/ disposers who when the heat is on in big games kindly hand the ball back to the opposition....

Jones has struggled to keep up with elite mids over the past couple of years and the coaches have decided his defensive work isn't enough to make up for his complete inability to provide anything offensively. Ledger did more in his first ever full game yesterday than Jones has done all year. Ross and Newnes both look at home in the seniors as well; it would only serve to stagnate development to continue to play Jones.

Ray is technically quite a good kick. It's just that sometimes he picks poor options or has the occasional bad shank. In such a low pressure game his ball use is generally very good.

I like jones ,
unfortunately he carn't kick ! lyon knew this , thats why in the freo game they were pressuring him and he turned it over all the time .

I also think we lost the north game cos jones didn't play ! Wells had his best ever game against us . jones usually keeeps him quiet .

I believe he's on his way out .

Melbourne could use a guy like CJ, he is a step up from magner and can play an inside mid role but is behind plenty at the Saints. If he goes he deserves another chance elsewhere he is a valuable player.

I'm happy to keep guys like Ray, Jones and Clarke on the list as depth players, as long as they are happy on a really low wage, and realise the younger guys are going to get opportunities before them. Even just for their experience around the squad, and around the younger guys in the VFL, I cant see any of them playing more than 10 games in the seniors in 2013 barring a large injury list.

We had a bit of a clean-out this year with younger duds (Al Smith etc.) and with probably a couple of retirements, we shouldn't need to cut 10-12 as some have suggested, to really rejuvinate the list. We can fill some holes with trades/mature recruits, and pick talented kids.
