Especially given he really seems reluctant to give it up, which surprised me to be honest...

On a side note, I wonder if Roo would be willing to accept a pay cut to keep the club competitive?

We can bag BJ for reported contract offers, and what he should be on, however the reality is...Roo is one of the highest paid players in the comp.

Indeed! And still directing films in his 80's.

It's funny because I used to refer to BJ as Jean-Luc, but it was a little obscure for people to get it.

Yep. Roo is probably the biggest piece in the Salary Cup puzzle and his salary for 2013 is kind-of the main roadblock for offering BJ more money in 2013 (and keeping him at the club).

IMHO - think BJ would stay if the Saints offered him 70% of the total GWS contract - but if we can only offer him 50 or 60% of the GWS total contract - I think he might leave.

for instance:

scenario 1 - BJ Stays (80%)

we offer 4 x 600 = $2.4m
gws offer 4 x 750 = $3m

scenario 2 - BJ leaves (56%)

we offer 4 x 450 = $1.8m
gws offer 4 x 800 = 3.2m

So if Roo said - ok ill take 600 next year - instead of 750 - then we could probably afford to keep BJ.

I have no idea why Rooy would give up the captaincy and even less idea why he would agree to a pay cut.

If we offer BJ 600k then we are a very silly club.

Roo deserves every penny he gets.

He earns his dollars.

He is the most overpaid player in the game.
Misses shots when we just need them kicked time and time again, he isnt worth the massive money he is on.

Harsh but true! Most of you would be so one eyed you can't see it!

What crap to write that he is the most overpaid player in the game. I could name 6 players that are probably overpaid and Roo is not one of them; not even close. I'm not saying he's perfect because no one player is but he single handedly got us over the line in the 2009 Prelim and nearly helped us win the 2010 flag (see the last 2 min of the game).

Forget about all the other countless games he has helped us win plus coming back from almost a career ending injury.

He has kicked over 500 goals for the club and won 5 B & F's. Roo deserves every cent he earns on courage and work rate alone.

You're kidding yourself pal. You must be a troll.

I'm not saying he doesn't earn or deserve it.

I'm saying not every club pays what is earned or deserved, because you can't

Painfully obvious on AFL 360 tonight how much we missed Roo. Geelong 5 goals from St.Kilda entry into the forward fifty, with mny being intercepts.

People dont understand the game very well if they think Riewoldt is overpaid. His work in leading, doubling back, leading in a different direction, doubling back and leading again draws out the defences zone and creates space in a crowded forward fifty.

Anybody who says he is overpaid is either very young or very ignorant of the modern game.

Riewoldt is invaluable and only a ball watcher who doesn't lift their eyes and look downfield would be dumb enough to say that.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion JB, without being told they are young or ignorant.

I think he deserves the cash, but disagree he should be paid the cash.

So if a 30 year old Riewoldt is worth close to $1million
what are the following worth?
Hawkins
Buddy
Pavlich

Riewoldt and Goddard to live up to their reputations ,Clarke and Ray to defy theirs in 2012!

When did Roo sign his last contract?

I think it's well and truly established that Roo is past his very best but by the same token he was worth every cent during the 2008-10 era... that's kind of the point of longer contracts, the club secures the service of the player, and the player gets some security.

the area for us to improve upon (probably) is that you'd hope as he is coming towards the end of his career, that his yearly salary os dropping to coincide with a natural decrease in input

It is an idiotic hyperbolic exaggeration.

this is a fair summation of Riewoldts worth SainterK.

No dumb insulting, dismissive statements like, Riewoldt is the most overpaid player in the history of the universe like Harvey 3 braincells brainfarted before.

Did you think that when he got the contract because that is the point? Contracts cant be adjusted up or down during contract otherwise the salary cap would be all over the place. He isnt going to take a pay cut and I cant see a reason he should. Steven and Armo arent going to get more this year but probably deserve more than they are being paid. Kosi probably owes us a million dollars but that is our fault and no player should be put in a position of being asked to take a cut especially when the window is 95% likely to be shut for the rest of his career.

We have no players worth anything like a million dollars, and those who might have pushed that figure a couple of years ago are on the way down sadly, including Goddard even though he is still a classy player when he feels like playing for the team.

Exactly and it's something that can't be proved anyway.

I reckon there might be circa 30 players on the Port and Melbourne lists that are well overpaid but I can't prove that either.

Someone rang in SEN to say Goddard is shopping for Oliver hill real estate. Might be a long way from Sydney.

That guy who rang in has yet to be right once this year. I reckon there is more hope that he changes his name to Oliver Hill.

I asked Goddard personally if he was going to sign with us and he was cagey and didn't fill me with confidence, but I saw him a couple of days later shopping for items that you would think mean he was staying so now completely unsure.

Most people shop though. Except maybe the Queen. I saw Harry shopping for clothes yesterday.
