Re: Drop Centrebet sponsorship
Find a sponser that will pay 2 mill a year and then drop if it you like no probs
It aint as easy as saying we don't a betting company being our spnoser and thousands of dollars coming rushing in,
We couldn't even get a 2nd co sponser this year let alone replace our major sponser, I am sure the club would take a alternative sponsership if it was available but it aint, I am one for sure that wouldn't want the club to brankrupt it self to the tune of 2 mill a year just on that principal.
Comparing it to a what 100g's sponsership of the wildcats that was guarenteed to be replaced by a government agency aint exactly the same as a 2 mill black hole in the budget

Re: Drop Centrebet sponsorship
Best ever moment re sponsorship:
I think it was the early '90s at Waverley.
The AFL had said that only one beer (Carlton?) was the official AFL beer.
The Saints banner read: 'I feel like a Toohey's or two!'
Huge cheer from the Saints crowd.....Tooheys was our sponsor.

In honour of those who went before, in the dark and desperate years.

Maybe Paul is right, I grew up with a Tooheys logo on my jumper & now I drink beer regularly.
Then again, I had Phillip Morris too and don't smoke.

When did gambling become illegal? I must have missed the announcement ...
I'm with JB on this ... gambling is a stupidity tax. Even so, that's just my opinion. it's legal, and humans have gambled thoughout the ages. Not going to be stopped anytime soon I think ...

We have to try and run a multi million dollar football club. Our membership is not great and our media profile in recent years has also not been great.
You DO NOT throw away a valuable sponsorship like this in the hope that someone else will be impressed and step into the breach.
You must secure the alternative sponsorship FIRST.
And until we're in a position to do that, these debates are a bit meaningless.

I dislike sex in public places - unless it's me having the sex! But then I prefer to known more as a wowser then a do gooder, because I don't do much good, but a lot of people see me having sex in public places and go "WOW!"......plugger66 wrote:A person who dislikes gambling, smoking and sex in public places.

Gambling is NEVER going to go away. Too many people willing to throw away their money in the hopes of winning big.PaulB wrote:After dropping a Perth based online gambling service, the Wildcats have now picked up their biggest sponsor ever.
This is a Commonwealth government agency, I wonder if our management has explored or has complacency set in with online gambling?
http://www.sportspromedia.com/news/pert ... s_history/
Even better, now more sponsors are coming to the Wildcats now that the distatseful image of online gambling has disappeared. More season ticket holders too!
Not sure what your problem is with online gambling? I don't gamble (don't even know how) except for the odd tatts ticket. Having Centrebet on the clubs jumper has not changed my opinion or convinced me to start online gambling at all. Gambling has always been around and always will be. It is just that it has evolved from taking bets over the counter (or under......LOL) to an online format. No different to any other business across the world that is making their presence visible online. Were you picketing to have TAB shops closed prior to the introduction of online gambling? Unfortunately, there are going to always be members of the community that are vulnerable to addiction and will find a way to feed that addiction. Having gambling available online is not going to change that.
In this current economic climate, I am just glad that we are able to secure major sponsors as Australia currently has the highest business insolvency rate that it has had in the past 20+ years. Great to see Centrebet throwing money at us. All that evil gambling money is going to a terrific cause....

Re: Drop Centrebet sponsorship
Look if you have an issue with gambling - and i do actually have a centrebet account that i use from time to time - and which i i have had for many years from before they sponsored the saints - i suggest the best avenue is for you to be writing a letter to your local mp - or state reps for the cth senate.
Our laws are enacted to (supposedly) represent community standards. So if something is legal - like online gambling - i dont think it is up to a club like the saints to make a statement about it. We are just a sports club running a quasi commercial business within existing laws. I personally would like to see less advertising for gambling. I think there should be some restrictions on it and it seems like the constant betting and odds updates on tv have gone too far and are really destroying the enjoyment of watching footy on tv for me. But thats really an issue between the afl and the broadcasters. Then there is the whole pokies issue which is another can of worms and imagine how NRL clubs would be looking without pokies. Not in good shape I imagine.
Anyway thats my 2 cents worth.
But really i dont think we are in a position to be knocking back sponsors - and 90% of people probably use sports gambling in a responsible way.
(just dont mention the fev or the ox).

At risk of going all Gaz-esque cryptic, other less benevolent types (both here and elsewhere) may toss up two names like PeeWee Herman and George Michael...plugger66 wrote:Give it to us as they would say in the porn classics.True Believer wrote:I dislike sex in public places - unless it's me having the sex! Public sex alone doesn't really count...

Anyway..., extracting my thought process from the gutter and returning to more wholesome matters..., what was this thread meant to be about again...?

Not long after releasing a movie entitled "Pee Wee's Big Top" Herman was caught in public handling his not so big top.
It was suggested Pee Wee might find it hard to hold his own in court, but the judge found that the case didn't stand up.
