Clint Jones
You would think coming against Geelong you would get Clinton to do a tagging job on a Geelong player like Selwood. What is his contract status? Doesn't sound bright..
Maybe Scott his moving away from tagging role like, Collingwood who don't really tag Midfielders either.
If he isn't getting games now will he get another season..? Can't really reinvent himself considering he hasn't learnt to kick for all those years at the club.

Re: Clint Jones
I said at the time, I still don't believe he was 'sore' v North, I think Watters has been assessing him and has maybe come to his conclusion.

Re: Clint Jones
I think kicking is the issue as opposed to being a defensive specialist. We have seen Ray play a similar role and is definately more damaging with the ball.
Think the other week when running into an open goal and not taking the shot has been burnt into the coach's mind?!

Re: Clint Jones
Personally I disagree with his exclusion against the Cats however I agree with the direction Watters is going in. Turnovers at critical times have cost us all year and Jones tends to make his fair share.

That miss was terrible and may have been the difference between finals and no finals.shmic_s wrote:I think kicking is the issue as opposed to being a defensive specialist. We have seen Ray play a similar role and is definately more damaging with the ball.

Raph hasn't played since he was run down from behind against North. I think our new coach holds a grudge or two...

Re: Clint Jones
Well I thought Jones was a definite in as a tagger.
But his kicking is barely above Auskick level.

Re: Clint Jones
I also thought that Jones may get a stopper gig against an experienced, tough side (which he is good at). However, it seems that the Coach may have drawn a line in the sand regarding the importance of kicking skills and good on him for that. How the Recruiters ever picked such a dud kicker, I will never know.
That Clint has never corrected what has been his problem skill area over the years, really surprises me - it's not a new problem!

Re: Clint Jones
Just some musings...
Maybe Scott has someone in mind for Johnson to follow him through the midfield and forward, so didn't want two nullifying players in the middle at any one time.
Could Geary be that someone?
Because Christennsen is out, so Gram could go to Motlop, Dempster to Chapman, leaving Gears to follow Johnson around?

Johnson has been playing in the middle a bit lately. If geary is going in there I will give up watching footy.

Remember Milney in there in 3-5 minute bursts last year.
Worth a try?
Worth a try?
Riewoldt and Goddard to live up to their reputations ,Clarke and Ray to defy theirs in 2012!
Re: Clint Jones
I think he'll play forward mostly this week, a few mids back in that can't play elsewhereplugger66 wrote:SainterK wrote:Just some musings...

Not sure we want Johnson too close to goal.

Re: Clint Jones
Not sure they would have dragged him for half the sandy game if he was about to be retired. I think he's pulled up sore so was taken off or he was a last minute change in the selectors thinking. Maybe they just figure there isn't any point tagging any of the mids at Geelong so will run a one on one type game plan.

Jones cannot kick and Raph has no awareness so why should they be on 200k to be pretty poor at their profession?

If you could clone Cj's tenacity/toughness and stopping power with Dals skills, decision making and durability.. What would you get?

He wasn't dragged. He didn't play the first quarter, played the rest of the game, and didn't do much at all.gringo wrote:Not sure they would have dragged him for half the sandy game if he was about to be retired. Re: Clint Jones
If he's gone in Watters mind then its short term pain for longer gain and I applaud this stance.
We all know Jones can do a job in the side right now. We also know he cant kick and in big games at big moments this has killed us (not just Jones btw)
IF he is gone, it's a little like the line Malthous put through O'Bree and co for Pies years ago..........and replaced them with skillful kids......hard to spot dud kicks in their line up...Cats too.

On that basis, why is Gram playing after being run down against Collingwood?suss wrote:That miss was terrible and may have been the difference between finals and no finals.shmic_s wrote:I think kicking is the issue as opposed to being a defensive specialist. Exactly where I was heading, he just wasn't blessed but worked harder than most others to get where he has. IMO.Teflon wrote:Judd.AccidentallyTim wrote:If you could clone Cj's tenacity/toughness and stopping power with Dals skills, decision making and durability.. What would you get?
Even if a preseason miraculously improved his kicking I'm not sure he would have the confidence on game day to take the kick?
Happy to be proven wrong

Re: Clint Jones
Don't know which came first, Clint losing confidence in himself or the coach losing confidence in Clint...anyhow good thread. Even p66 contributed something intelligent. There's no way Geary can go with Stevie J... not even for 3 minutes.
Re: Clint Jones
Seems he has made his way through Raph, Peake, Jones, Polo....hoping that the inclusion of Ray shows he has past the test, because I'd like him to stick around.
Jones has got an awful lot more out of himself than many would have ever thought, I just think the GP now exposes his flaws that existed, just that bit more.
It wasn't just that shot on goal, the game against Sydney highlighted his strengths and weaknesses all at the same time. Nullified Jetta amazingly well, but also found himself with the ball outside of his comfort zone and where he had to use decision making....and honestly freaked out every time.
Perhaps Watters moved him onto the Jetta/Beams types to see if he had another string to his bow, but unfortunately I think it shows it's inside mid or bust.
Does his contract expire at years end?
