I think some of the observations on Steven are perfectly warranted.
Yes, he's quick, can find the footy and has goal sense. Doesn't mean supporters can't acknowledge that his foot skills let him down.
At this stage, his foot skills aren't AFL standard and that's just the hard, honest truth.
Labelling him the worst player ever for the saints? Are you seriously saying that that is constructive or adds anything? The guys played less than 50 games Jeeesus. Well lets bring in youth then cut strips off them when they aren't R harvey straight away.

There was one poster labeling him our worst player. Is that everyone else said?

He had a rotten night. But I can't think of any young player on our list that can turn situations our way the way he can. He can make a difference. He's dynamic.
He hasn't been great the last couple of weeks but up til then he was terrific. And he'll be a gun. As SK said - played only 46 games.

He's played 46 games not 2. Just how many games is it going to take for people to stop making excuses for him? I saw Robert Harvey win games by himself before he had played 40 games. The only similarity between Jack and Robert is that they have been Saints players. It's a joke comparing Jack to Robert, but once people declare a young player a "gun" usually before they have even played a game (we saw the same thing with David Armitage, Tom Lynch, Tom Walsh and a few others), then they will stick to that position regardless of performance.
Steven needs to work on disposal, and for a small, he's not much good below the knees. Needs to stop trying to outrun opponents, get balanced, and instead find a target and kick properly.
Can I just point out that in his 47 AFL games he has kicked 37 goals.
And he is playing in the mid-field.
I have no problem with an emerging mid-fielder with great talent taking the game on as he does.
How many others do we have who can bounce and run away from the opposition?
Because he was running away from them.
Take that out of the game of our players and we might as well play soccer!
The problem with some who have watched the game for 50 years is that they are 1) old, 2) have generally not been involved in the game to recognise that it is not the same game as it was 50 years ago and 3) they continue to live in the past.
I am of the view from viewing the constant negative contributions that the lead poster submits that he fits this description - and that he does not understand the complexities of today's game.
No idea about footy and you are a sook as well. Didnt you quit this site because someone started a thread that you normally do. At the time I thought you were about 10 years but have since found out you are over 60. Now that is hilarious. may bring the thread out just to prove a game can have no idea at all in at least 2 threads. Our coaches i gather might know more than you and when he finished in the top8 in the B&F this year you may again have people laughing at you like they did in that thread a few years ago.
What a strange thread. I've seen many worse players than Jack. I actually think he's much less clanger prone than he was at the start of the season, even if he's still got some work to do. He's one of the few players we've got who can actually run past an opponent.
The problem is when the quest for perfectionism turns into an obsession – so much so that the perfectionist becomes neurotic over gaining “perfection” and refuses to accept anything less than perfect. In the process, he misses the whole point altogether.
Well there have been some shocking players that have played for the Saints but to call him the worst is plain idiotic
In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.
you were wrong the first time and made yourself look a bit silly by trying to back it up. Should have let it go, you now have no cred here.
Jack is a star in the making and only someone who has little grasp on the game would not see that.
Poor form to bag a kid who by no means a world beater (at present) has improved steadily and will be making a few posters here eat their words. The run and mis-bounce was awful, but I've seen more experienced players make similar bloopers. The facts are that a number of our players had lapses in concentration and skill errors came back to bite us on the bum. The result was a cow, but by gum it was a cracker of a game and with a wee bit more composure at times it could have been different. Now, I HATE the concept of "honourable losses", but I still saw much to be optimistic about from the game last night. We played, we lost, we move on! Keep up the efforts Jack!!! it will come good!!!
Not the worst player and is certainly AFL standard but Jack Steven HAS the ability to be elite.....but may never reach that if he doesnt lift his disposal/decision making.
Elite players dont get rabbitt in headlights when out in front with the ball - the sad thing is Jack DOES all the hard the work, gets free from opponents out of congestion.......and hands it straight back undoing everything!
Improve that even to a "good" without being great level and i reckon his other abilities could see him as elite.
errrrrrr I can remember waaaay back in 2003 when some folk were questioning the wisdom of taking Goddard at first pick Give the kid the benefit of the doubt at least until he gets to 100 games for goodness' sake!
Jack wasn't great yesterday and yes, his form over the last few weeks has been ordinary. And yes, he has a few things to work on. After watching the third quarter v Melbourne, to say he is the worst player to play for the Saints, is way off the mark for mine. He has power, strength and pace. Isn't that what the Saints need in the midfield? He hasn't played fifty games yet. If we start turfing out players like Jack, then we are well and truly on the wrong track.
Go to the game, he is the guy who breaks away from a contest at full tilt, he struggles to kick straight at full speed but who doesn't. He is trying hard and getting a reasonable output and his best is still ahead of him. Give it a break.
I guess Gram has had a reasonable game because we're looking elsewhere now.
