Saint v Pies - Preview / Discussion

Post: # 1245273Post SainterK »

Last time these sides met was at Etihad Rd 21 when the Pies def Saints 14.5.89 to 10.10.70

Brownlow Votes: 3: D Swan, 2: L Davis, 1: N Dal Santo

So many changes to both sides personnel since last played, in good news for us, Leon Davis is no longer as he really cut us up in recent years.

Outs for Saints include Blake, Dawson, Polo, Clarke, Peake, Ray - For the Pies Rounds, Davis, Ball, Johnson, Brown, Krakouer

Injury concerns: Schneider hamstring

Hard to guage both teams formline this week, given both sides had softish games v weak opposition. Swan continued his brownlow form and kicked goals to boot, Beams form line makes me surprised that nobody has brought up the awkward question about Luke Ball getting back in, Cloke kicked 7 for his best return in ages.

Would it be worth Jones attempting to tag Swan, I'm not sure anyone has done it in recent months, or attempt the Pendlebury matchup?

Possible matchups are hard v Pies as so many mids/smalls rotate making it hard for designated matchups.

A couple I'd like to see

Fisher v Cloke
Gwilt v Dawes
Ray v Shaw (something left field in Schneiders absence)

Milney should make the most of Harry O-verateds form slump, smalls seem to trouble them in recent months.

I have no fear of the Magpies, nor do I feel especially confident. If we kick as badly as we did today against a decent side like Collingwood then we 'll be toast! On the other hand, it's quite some time since Milney only kicked a single for a match and he could well be ready to put on his shooting boots next staurday evening. I'm going along to the MCG with an open mind about this one.

Do what we did v Essendon - tag Pendlebury and send Dal Santo to Swan for a head-to-head matchup. If one of our mids is going to get 30 touches, it might as well be Dal.

He does love doing a job on the Pies for some reason. I would tag Pendles over Swan any day of the week but they have a pretty decent spread of capable ball winners now.

We don't play the G that well, and they play it unbelievably well. If it was at Etihad I reckon we'd get within 3 goals, maybe even win.

Honestly, can't see us getting within 5 or 6 goals. I just hope we don't get pumped, though I have a feeling we will.

CJ to Beams btw. Swan and Pendles just too good, can't stop them. Beams is gettable from a tagging perspective and when he's left to play his own game, is just as damaging as the bigger names.

Sean started on the wing tonight. I wonder, can he go with someone in the middle in a shutdown role ?
He did this when he played with the Swans.
Maybe CJ on Pendles, Dal on Swan or vice versa and Sean on Beams ?
One thing I'm thinking is that we need to counter act the spare man in defence they employ.
Making Maxwell and Harry O accountable is the trick.

Joey v Swan would be similar based on the role he played today?

Somebody said Nick dal to Swan, thats a great idea!
Dal can hurt them with his poise and reduce Swans impact.
Its not the high number Swan gets, but where he gets em.
If Dal takes it away from the painted one, it reduces Swans impact.
Just like against the bombers.
We just need to be cleaner than today into the F50 and convert better FFS

Like against the Swans we'll be in with a chance. If with don't take our opportunities then we'll get the same result. We are good enough IMO.

Win the clearances and midfield battles and stop their run and spread and we'll go a long way to winning.

Ray comes in if fit and No. 15 gets his second game for 2012 (he debuted against the Pies, so he'll be confident of making a contribution). Saad and other smalls rotate through the middle to chop out and block the run of Swan and Beames.

If we are unpredictable and if we hunt them we can win. Play as a team and be selfless and we can win...e.g. Roo and Milne are picked in the team, but they are decoys most of the time, with Dunnell and Siposs as the main leading forwards.

Since Last Time

Collingwood - 12 changes to last week

IN: N Brown, Buckley, Clarke, Dawes, Elliott, Mooney, Seedsman, Shaw, Sinclair, Toovey, Wood, Young
OUT: Ball, L Brown, Davis, Didak, Johnson, Jolly, Krakouer, O'Brien, Rounds, Sidebottom, Thomas, Wellingham

St Kilda - 6 changes to last week

IN: Dunell, Gwilt, Hayes, Saad, Simpkin, Wilkes
OUT: Blake, Clarke, Dawson, Peake, Polo, Ray

Obviously Jolly, O'Brien, Sidebottom and Thomas will come back in after being rested against GWS, but that's still 8 changes for the Pies - a fair bit of youth getting games there!

For the Saints, that's a much-maligned list of outs so you'd assume that this year we have nothing to complain about, right?

My one wish would be for Milne and Kosi to have some kind of decent game at the G against the Woods for a change!

Swan needs to be picked up by Dal. Need to stifle their supply into the F50.
They are faster and better than the Bumbers so we have to do what we did then, but up a notch.

Matrix says Pies by 170. & we'll be inaccurate?
I reckon we will be far more accurate this time. But we'll get thrashed, but only by less than 8 goals.

Our midfield was one of the best in the league before it's confidence was probably shot by the coach thinking that all of Jones, Dempster and Ray were required to nullify our way to a win against side like the Pies.

On pure talent, why can't the boys win a head to head contest with most of them?

I think Scott has been showing them that, slowly over time, that their best IS good enough.

Hayes, Montagna, Dal Santo, Goddard, Armitage, Steven

No nullifying, dish out an old fashioned spanking please boys.
