Gym
I mentioned in another thread that I reckon Milera needs a big pre-season pumping weights and gaining some serious muscle.
Here is my list of players I think need to hit the gym so that they are stronger next year:
- Milera
- Dunell
- Simpkin
- Newnes
- Cripps
- Jackson Ferguson
- Geary ?
- Seb Ross
The above players are ones who are either in the Senior side, or will be in contention soon.
I'm sure there are others in the VFL who I know nothing about... any others need some gym time?
Markworth looks skinny from his profile picture, and Curren looks well built.

Re: Gym
Do muscles make people play better??
What if Milera put 5kg on and slows down??? And loses his best weapon, his movement. He's never going to be a hard bodied tough nut... Why try and make him one
Geary has had 6 pre seasons already, he won't get any bigger
Ross is already massive, probably needs to shed a couple to improve movement
Dunnell, Ferguson gain massive advantages from their height/speed ratio and are great athletes
Cripps needs a ticker more than Biceps.... He's not skinny anyway
Markworth and Newnes will gain size naturally
Artificial bulk won't make the better players.... Size needs to be added in time.

Re: Gym
This man's name is Yohan Blake. He is 22 years old. He ran a 9.75sec for 100m last week in the Jamaican national championships.
I am quite sure he spends A LOT of time in the gym. I am quite certain he is not carrying "artificial bulk" that "slows him down".
BM do you think if Yohan laid off the weights and the gym he could go quicker? Maybe you should get a job as his coach? Get 'the Beast' down to a 9.3 so hes not carrying around all that wasted muscle? I do agree that some types of weight training might slow people down by adding weight in the wrong body areas etc etc but I'm pretty sure our trainers (Burgey) know enough about weight training to make sure our guys are getting stronger and quicker - but not bulking up so they cant cover their 10km per match.
Markworth, Ferg, Tezza, Saady, Dunell and Ross need to hit the gym big time. Im in no doubt.

Re: Gym
Are you comparing those boys to a elite sprinter, who
1-has a natural/trained sprinting technique
2-has a natural/genetic high composition of fast twitch fibers
3-you'd be surprised at how light he is, he would carry close to no body fat, therefor the definition of his physique is awesome
4-he would do zero percent strength training. 100 power training.
5–with the amount of Aerobic running AFL players do, a physique like that would take years..... Yohan would finish very low at a pre season 3.2k run, and his repeat effor running would be average. He trains solely for a optimum effort straight line run...all power and speed
AFL players train for strength, speed, power, repeat effort (phosphate recovery), muscular endurance, but above all ENDURANCE..... Which, like playing has a counteracting effect of growing muscle mass

Re: Gym
Big muscles don't necessarily make a Tough footballer, let alone a tough one.
Not sure Josh Hunts playing style needs 100kg??
Chris Judd is wiry.... And strong as an OX
Gary Blett was Huge!! But it was all power and explosion.
Jobe Watson stripped it all off, as did Goddard... Different players have different natural physiques and body compositions and need to understand what role they play and how best to grow their body...

'They're all big guys, so I thought I'd spend some more time in the gym to get some size up,'' Richards said.
''I really wanted to be seen as a real strong one-on-one defender … I wanted to be able to wrestle with the big guys and be able to hold my own.''
The changes in Richards' physique were not drastic.
He estimates he added ''three kilos, maybe four'' to his frame but the effect of that extra bulk was pronounced.
''But with it came a significant increase in strength and most of it was probably upper body,'' he said.

Re: Gym
3 kilos is a nice size increase after a pre season if strength is a requirement.... Richards is 29 and not a runner..?
Would like Simpkin to Add about the same.
Adding weight certainly had a negative effect on Essendon.... None could stay on the park, and their condition manager is a definite to get sacked

interesting point as it is being blamed for theie current soft tissue woes. But remember the Brisbane Lions team in 01 02 03 they were all solid boys...BigMart wrote:3 kilos is a nice size increase after a pre season if strength is a requirement.... Richards is 29 and not a runner..?

What is the difference between strength and power?
Re: Gym
the difference between strength and power is time.
eg..2 people can bench press a maximum of 100kgs (thay have the same strength)
player 1 can lift it in 3 seconds where as player 2 takes 10 seonds to lift.. therefore player 1 is more powerful

So it's like speed? A function of time?
How does endurance come in? I thought that was reliant on time.
Re: Gym
yes it is like speed. the quicker you can move the weight the more powerful (it is a mathematical equation)
strength is mass x distance =
power is mass x distance x time =
not 100% sure the endurance side but i am guessing that endurance is how often or how long it takes to repeat an action at the same level or near the same level..as in the sprinters above..it would take them a longer time to do another sprint at the same level as a race.

Re: Gym
A simple way to look at power is the ability to produce force in a short amount of time, so it is effectively a combination of strength and speed. In conditioning, strength is the base on which power is built. There are many different forms of endurance which are reliant on continuous or repeated efforts over time, eg. cardiovascular, muscular, speed, strength and power endurance. Arguably the most important in today's game is cardiovascular endurance which allows a player to perform at a higher output for longer. Riewoldt has exceptional cardiovascular endurance, especially for a tall forward, and this is what gives him a great advantage over most of his opponents.Spinner wrote:tgf wrote:the difference between strength and power is time.

Re: Gym
Dane Swan may not have much bulk, but he would be just about the strongest player at the Pies. Pretty sure he benches the most at Collingwood.ShanghaiSaint wrote:D swan is a great example of muscle not being needed to be a great afl player....
Big difference between training hypertrophy (bulk) and strength and power.
