Re: Vale Roger Head- '66 Premiership Player
Sorry to hear about the passing of our 1966 premiership player.
He attended on of the "On the Couch" nights a couple of years ago and he was struggling with a few old footy injuries etc.
He joins Yabby, the Doc and Bongo up in the grandstand in the sky.

Yep, met him only once, at the reunion in Launceston in 2009, the night before the match against Hawthorn (we which won). He was part of that great last line of defence - Head, Murray and Sierakowski. Premiership teams are built on a great defence - and we had it in spades. Here is a pic taken in 2009, Rodger is in the front row holding the walking stick:
Re: Vale Rodger Head- '66 Premiership Player
RIP Roger. Thankyou for contributing to the greatest moment in our club's history.
I wonder if Roger was aware of Tom Simpkin's nickname of "Head" and being in the Saints backline. Quite ironic.
Thanks again Roger.

Only player in our history to win in both a Reserves and Senior Premiership. 1961 and 1966. Was thought to be BOG playing in the Centre in the 61 Reserves GF.

How many can be named from there. Roger Head I wouldn't have recognised but two to the right of him is either Ian Synman or Verdun Howell who I always confuse and beside him Allan Morrow.
From the right on the second row Carl Ditterich, Bob Murray, Ross Smith, Allan Jeans, Ross Oakley, Barry Breen.
On the right in the third row, Cowboy Neale.
I think Hawthorn had a few out that day and even though they were reigning premiers it was one of the few times in recent history where we had more Premiership players at the ground than they did.

Second row from the right is Big Carl, then Bob Murray. Verdun is two from the right of RH. Can see Allan Morrow, Doggy, Rowland, Ross Oakley, Breeny amongst others.

I went to the reunion/hawks game back in '09 as well. The reunion was truly a special night, sadly a few of the guys have passed away since without being able to 'hand on the baton', which was mentioned in a couple of the speeches.

A sad day for all associated with the club.
We've now lost three of them and the coach.

Head was an active corporate supporter of the Saints and very close to his premiership teammates.
It was his idea that the 1966 flag team should visit their ailing skipper Darrel Baldock in Tasmania. He and teammate John Bingley organised the reunion in 2009.
Battling prostate cancer, he was determined to celebrate his 70th birthday in a big way and organised a party at the Flower Drum for family, friends and his 1966 teammates.
And he joined Lindsay Fox in organising a reunion last year to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1961 St Kilda reserves premiership.
A celebration of his life will be held on Friday 10am at the Trevor Barker Beach Oval in Hampton.

Re: Vale Rodger Head- '66 Premiership Player
The celebration of Rodger's life is at 11.30, Friday 13th July at TBBO, Sandy, NOT 10.am.
Coco Roberts and Ross Smith will be giving the eulogy I believe.
Heady was a great bloke, loved the Sandy Club, wine and copious beers.
The only person I know to be booked for being over .05 riding a bicycle.

And me.
I can see every member of this team passing before they win another.
I will pass on before they fluke another flag.
