DEFENDER Jarryn Geary has extended his contract for a further two years until the end of 2014.

The hard-running 24-year-old was drafted from TAC Cup side Bendigo Pioneers in the 2006 Rookie Draft, and was elevated the following year.

Deservedly so. Having a great year.
Interestingly to note is the list Mgr (Bainsey) is concentrating on ticking off the guys in the 22-26 year age group first and foremost. Then worrying about the older and younger blokes once this "core age" group (of which we are pretty weak) lock in.
Note Gilbo, Macca, JG, Jimmy, Armo, Rhys etc have been priorities. So focus on that mid age bracket.

All our second year players are out of contract as none of our 2010 recuits got more than the normal 2 years.

What is Tom Simpkin's contractual situation? id say they will want to lock him in now.
I also think Beau will definitely get a contract for next year as insurance (assuming he is only on one year?).

Who will be annointed for next season? Quite a wide potential field for you to sift through. Could we even see a SS first, and have more than one anointing for 2013???

He became a first 22 player last year and played the last 8 games straight when he became our "first choice" small defender after he then took over Baker's spot after he had his paper's stamped. The Apprentice taking over from the Master.
Played 19 games in 2010.

He has the small defender's spot as his at present.

Jack Newnes is his understudy at present and is the only real threat to Geary for this position. Geary's toughness still give's him the edge. Newnes shows promise to go past him....but however may even do that by leapfrogging into the midfield group rather than taking over the BP role..

Can Geary like say many other St Kilda BP's like Burke, Dunne, etc take the step up to play permanent mid? The key will be whether he can improve his ball use. (Like that horrible pass across goals against the Dons to Gilbert early in the game when it was still live). He has many very good qualities..workrate, hardness, judgement , reading the play, "finding" the football.

If he steps up (into the midfield for example) he could become a "core" player. If not he will remain a "support' player in the 22. No shame in that . Blake for example has played two hundred games doing just that stamping out a great legacy.

You raised some good points there sRr - even if I cut most of them out in my quoting.

I took K to mean that (if fit) Jarryn would become an automatic first 22 pick, as his contributions on field would be expected to be valuable to the team beyond just fulfilling a role, or making up the numbers. Despite his consistent selection late last season, (IMHO) I don't reckon that Jarryn entered season 2012 with that standing. I recall some on here considering his choice by K as being a bit of a surprise. And I was one of them, though I certainly believed that he was capbale of achieving this.

As for what K herself actually meant by 'core player', well since this is a footy forum, I'll handball that one to her...
