Goddard(Is he Elite)

Post: # 1233987Post murray 66 »

I admire Goddards contribution to the Saints but i am warming to the idea of Goddard leaving and receiving good compensation picks in return for his departure.
As stated earlier by previous posts Goddard will turn 28 next year and I believe he is no longer elite and commanding of 700k-800k.
We have Fisher,Gilbert that play a sweeping role similar to Goddard at different stages during games .
The current scenario is playing out very similar to abblets and scully's exits from their clubs in years gone past and i think Watters might be thinking the same by priortising stanley, gwilt and others before years end.

All the quotes of Bj stating he wants to remain a Saint and will in due course are rubbish, why hasn't he re-signed we are half way through the year and still no signature.

I think the Saints brain trust is all over this one.

Go Saints.

Yes he is

His output has generally been down over the last 18 months..... Unlike Dal he was hurt by the Lenny injury in 2011

The cascade effect was that Dal went more inside in the midfield.... Goddard went more into the midfield to compliment and was exposed in that area. He is not an elite mid, and is far better suited as a free wheeling flanker or winger... He is not a player who keeps up with play as a mid, and is more a reader of the play..... And gets to places where the ball is going.

What he is worth on current output is a little different to what he should be worth ATM.

He should be the best player at StK with the tools and experience he has, but still sits behind Sam, Lenny, Dal and alongside Joey, Roo....

Current value 500k

Potential value 750k

Mart two questions 1,Do you believe Bj is gone?

2,Can we cover his loss?

At his best he's elite (think the GF's) but he hasn't shown that form for 18 months, do we just assume he's going to produce that again? It's a tough one and it's frustrating because we need that Goddard.

Goddard is a great player, but not elite. Does not win enough of his own ball, not great below his knees, has no pace. His kicking is elite, and he is a good reader of the play. Can we cover his loss if he decides to leave? Yep, I think we can

Yes agree with this.

I call BJ a "backfielder" and have done for many years. This is where he is elite.

As a full-time ...or full-time forward he struggles and is then just a player with moments of brilliance.

Interestingly enough at present Siposs looks to being groomed into being a "backfielder" like BJ. Not saying he will be as good, but like BJ is a beautiful long and accurate kick. Like BJ wil bea player others dish the ball off to so that they can set up play.

If BJ stays, and Siposs blooms then that ll open up the game more for BJ as the opposition will not be easily able shut them both down..

Siposs needs to get his hands on the ball as much as possibly into the future. Great kick and gives us more scoring opportunities with him disposing the ball by foot.

I think he is elite.

Hopefully now Fisher is back, he can ease into his normal position.

He is elite as far as ball use is concerned - beating an opponent one on one he is good not great!

Dont think he is elite. Swan, Pendles, Selwood, Watson, Franklin etc. They are elite and Goddard is nowhere near those guys. Yes when he is "on" he is as good as those but they do it week in week out whereas BJ does it once every 4-6 weeks.

Depends how you define elite. Is he is in the same bracket as Ablett, Buddy, Judd, Cloke, Pendlebury, Swan, Selwood? No.

IMO he's a very good player and top 5 at the club however he's not elite.

Exactly. Elite IMO is Lenny and Rooy at their best in our side. Dal would be next and then BJ. BJ's problem is he doesnt win enough of his own ball, something elite players have to do IMO.

That fountain of knowledge Mike Sheahan predicted after the 2010 GF heroics that he would become the best player in the competition last year. Unfortunately he hasn't gone on to become that, and after an average 2011 is still not playing as well as he was in 2009 and 2010. 28...jeepers, how time flies!

great but not elite .
elite players win games for you , like roo did before his hamstring injury ! the two years prior to that there was about a dozen games we won because of his effort .
Bj hasn't done this in his whole career , although he does play at a very high standard .

Hird did not win his own ball nor did he kick with his non-preferred

Couldnt kick at all on his left but certainly won his own ball.

you're wrong, and to prove it you should probably watch the last quarter vs west coast in 2004:

What? Do you mean Allan Hird? Can't be James. Excellent on his left (over short distances) and got plenty of it, e.g. 2000 GF 29 disposals (7 marks).

Goddard is good, be he ain't elite. Elite players are the ones who dominate or swing the tide of a game. The last Saint who nearly swung the game from loss to a win was Hayes in the '10 gf draw.
