DEFENDER James Gwilt has re-signed with the club until the end of 2014.

In his seventh year at the Saints, the 25-year-old said he was excited about extending his career in the red, white and black.

“I’ve re-signed for another two years, which I’m really happy about. I’ve always hoped to be a one-club player,” James Gwilt said.

“I’m feeling pretty good, I know there’s a massive opportunity for us at the moment, as a group.”

Gwilt also takes time to thank the Saints for their modern rehab facilities and club officials Josh Low and Paul Montgomery for their support.

That's typical, according to club insiders, who say Gwilt is very much the type of quality person who thinks of others and embraces the club mantra that resulted, with a vote from his peers, in a leadership position this season.

Watters has leadership and values high on his list of priorities at the club, given the Saints' recent off-field dramas.

He doesn't subscribe to the traditional approach of a captain and vice-captain, preferring to establish a broader level of leadership.

The players had their say, and Gwilt joined Nick Riewoldt, Nick Dal Santo, Sam Fisher, Leigh Montagna, Adam Schneider, Brendon Goddard and Ben McEvoy in the group with Hayes playing a role as mentor.

"I am honoured, especially being part of the guys in there," he says. "I am learning a fair bit. We get together every week.

"The club, for the players, must be more than just turning up to train and play - it is the nuts and bolts of the entire club that must be valued."

Jimmy Gwilt is a great example to those ADHD supporters who think every player should be ready for the seniors the moment they are drafted.

Gwilt is a big unit with a lovely kick abd relatively quick. Never had the opportunity to develop in the TAC as he was plucked from Suburban footy.

There were high expectations of him after the cameo in the 2005 final against Adelaide but he needed time to develop and has proven to be a solid contributer to the backline over the past few years. Was sorely missed when he went down with an ACL last season.

Like Blake a true clubman who deserves high respect from the supporters.
