Ok so…

This year a third-round draft pick earns a base salary of $51,000, plus $2900 for each match they play. All first-round selections are entitled to a base of $59,200 next year, plus $2900 a match. Second-round selections receive a base pay of $53,800.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/r ... z1yEELOeiU

But that only means Seb Ross is on 59 instead 50, not really break-the-cap numbers, but I guess they would have to allow for a pretty significant amount of match day payments over the year, say we have around 10-12 players each week who are on set contracts… that leaves 10-12 more who would get at least $2,900 per match

So 12 X $2,900 x 22 games = $765,600

Which would probably be closer to a million as would expect middle-rung senior players to earn more per match than newbies…

So it brings the cap down closer to $7.8 million for contract purposes… Which makes our top 10 players contracts even harder to fathom. Leaving around 28 blokes to fight over around $3.5 mil -

I remember Roo saying Lenny was on a low contract. Cant imagine Gram earning more than BJ?

It's only 20% more.... That's not much is it??

Without match payments...

I hope Mary can swindle 20% out of Balleiu!!! More like 2.0% I reckon

$9,000 for only one player is around .1% of the cap, no I wouldn't call that much. I dare say there are much bigger discrepancies in my list than Seb Ross...

If you're going to get picky, get it right, 59,000 is 18% more than 50,000.

Is it 20% more of 8.78 million. Considering the figures are guesses 10k is bugger all in the scheme of things. Sorry missed your reply Dragit. Pretty much summed it up.

I just saw Jarryn Geary down in St Kilda banging around in a 10 year old falcon, I think he must be on some seriously crap money or a tight arse.

i earn well and drive a 20 year old corolla. not sure why people seem to think that the car you drive says something about your worth as a person.

Isn't there a limit to the number on the veterans list? Wasn't this why Jason Blake was delisted, so he could be taken off the veterans list to allow Kosi to go on and make a bigger saving?

From what i have read on here it changes next year. Once you have 10 years at the club you can be a veteran but only 100k can be taken off your salary.

The key things this will be the resignings.
A players worth is exactly what he would be paid on the open market.
So guys like Kosi an Gram are currently, it appears, dramatically overpaid.
The most either would get offered by another club at this stage of their careers is about $200K, Gram maybe a little more but Kosi probably less.
That is what they should be recontracted for, if SW decides he wants to resign them.
A number of players got large contracts after the GFs they will not command as much now.
BJ is probably the only exception to that rule.
I do not believe the cap pressure is as bad as the press is trying to make out.

not his worth as a person just an AFL trinket that peer pressure seems to make them feel is necessary once they have a bit of extra cash. I thought it was a strange thing to see an AFL footballer with a car that wasn't a wanker mobile but he did have a fine looking girlfriend so didn't need to compensate.

I remember Barry Hall used to drive a HR holden with a bonnet scoop that was taller than the roofline and huge back wheels and Peckett had an old Chevy.

Remember a lot of these contracts would have been written/signed when we were winning 19 in a row and on our way to 2 grand finals. Roo and BJ were arguably both in the top 5 of the competition back then.

Slowed down and not worth it now? Yes. Back then...hell yes they were worth it.

Yes I very much doubt that figure put up for Gram - even taking the lower end of Gram's salary range estimates recently mentioned on here - even if it was $400K - I reckon that it's partly back-ended. Could be wrong though.

Way to simple way of looking at it. So many contracts are back ended and front loaded, so that while maybe Montagna was 450 thousand a year, maybe 2 years ago he only got 200 thousand to accommodate for other contracts and now he is 800 thousand this year. Obviously just a random example that would be wrong, but you get the point.

It's a good point, obviously just guessing and probably incorrectly for the main,

I get the feeling that someone like Riewoldt, when the club wrote his contract, they would have planned for the old veterans list rules - where 2 eligible players can have half of their salary outside the cap… You would think that being our highest paid that he would have a back-ended contract to maximize this benefit… In which case he could be scheduled to earn an unbelievable amount next year which now can't be halved via the veterans list (only 100K)

So anyone on a $300K+ contract does not get match day payments?
I woiuld say those at the lower end would be on a base plus match payments , those between say $100k & $300k could be on a base plus match and/or bonus incentives... ie play 10 games receive a bonus, 15 games another bonus etc. Above $300k would be set or with incentives....

The knowns are:

Free Agency List (i.e. restricted are in top 10 paid players)
Sam Fisher Restricted
Brendon Goddard Restricted
Jason Gram Restricted

Free agency and the new veteran rules may make an ageing team a more desirable outcome.
Who would you rather have as the #18-25 on the list - Dean Polo, Brett Peake, Farren Ray (say each on 150k - or 450k of salary cap) or Stephen Milne, Jason Blake and Raph Clarke (say each on 200k - or 300k of salary cap <600-3x100>)?
Could you effectively make your salary cap public by announcing salary bandings for 1-5, 6-10, 10-18 and not deviating from these - similar to how Geelong are dealing with the Travis Boak situation.

It sorta makes me question weather Roo is worth twice/thrice as much as rest. He's worth fuggin plenty but is he twice as good as our other star players???
