What was the resultant punishment for his two night in hospital..... Wasn't it none, because it was a NON story??
It was a mistake.... If you can't see it your stupid, if you don't want to admit it, you're ignorant...
His success was good luck??? Now that's the dumbest comment I ever read.... I think we should return to the comments by DelEdio and throw in some comments by Hardwick..... Which basically refute all of the rubbish sprouted on this thread by 'one eyed, head in the sand apologists...
He got very lucky of a long period, he is one of the most decorated players to play the game...... For Ricmond it wa a no-brainer.... And it turned out successful on many fronts... That's hindsight fact, can't really be argued.
If you believed a fit and healthy BC (as he was in 2009/2010) wouldn't have assisted the side.... Fair Dinkum
Criminal??
He's not the one who was charged by police and had Three of our players testifying in court, that would be the moron we DID recruit!

So I will ask for a third time..... why didn't Collingwood take him ?BigMart wrote:Questions weren't answered... None
Basically looking for excuses, reality is.... He did nothing but good at Richmond. That cannot be argued. It's been acknowledged by the coach and players.
Who could he have replaced in 2009..... I think he'd make an OK HFF as he played there for Richmond. I know he'd demand more respect from his opponents than our HF's did when they peeled off to double team Nick. Speaking of Nick, I think he would have enjoyed some of delivery by foot of BC. I think he would have been nice coming off the bench, and resting Joey, Dal...
Back to recruiting over 2008/2009.... Why defend it, it was deplorable and after this year 2 out of 22 players recruited will remain... Only 2 players over 40 games, one has since gone to Freo and they were both mature age... They caused a hole in our list Pelchin need to fill, and is trying to do so
The recruiting of Lovett for a FRP with a 3 year deal was a joke......
They were sacked for a reason!
Last questions.... Even though the others weren't answered
Did cousins who was reportedly tested over 100 times in two years test positive???
If we recruited Cousins, and he tested positive..... What would we have lost??
Not Craw, CRAW!
Re: Brett Delidio Quote
Because they humiliated themselves when the PI news was leaked.... He was very much considered by the Pies. Glad they didn't because we played them in the 09 finals....

If you believe that a person with a serious methamphetamine addiction can be called "fit and healthy" then thank christ you don't have anything to do with recruiting for our club.BigMart wrote: If you believed a fit and healthy BC (as he was in 2009/2010) wouldn't have assisted the side.... It is you that needs to get your head out of the sand. The decision was made with information regarding his likelihood of re-offending. With that information there was only one sensible decision.
*Allegedly.

I think we should have got Cousins but these comical hindsight threads are quite funny. Who knows what would have happened had BC and MG been together in the same team.

So Ricmond got it wrong??
On evidence, I would argue that..... He was obviously healthy... Over 100 tests all negative. He was the most tested player in the AFL in 2009. More to the fact was that BC was not a constant drug user, but would have big breaks, and then go on a massive binge. He often went through 3-6 month periods without using, and then have 7 days of abusing drugs, then stop again for a period
I would also argue..... If he did re-offend, which he may have. What would the risk have been???
Simply delist... He would have been given his chance and didn't take it, that would be his fault, yes???
Again, at least we wouldn't risk a 3 year $1M contract, a first round draft pick on a guy who hasnt even finished in the top ten in a club B&F. would you like me
The one argument you couldn't use against Ben is that his attitude towards his footy and fitness was not first class
I rate his training with the very best... Harvey, Bradley, Crawford... His training was legendary.....
Perhaps I list his CV again, to remind people of who we were dealing with.... This was not a GOP
A.Lovett was the laziest trainer at Windy Hill.... When he turned up at Moorabbin he was beaten in a time trial by Blake McGrath... And he was recruited as a runner.... Good due diligence there

Re: Brett Delidio Quote
You obviously weren't around in 2008?? Hindsight, not so sure, anyway....
I do believe I was laughed at then, and that Richmond will suffer having made a huge mistake!! Not sure that happened??
All the mocking from apologists won't sway my opinion... He should have been selected! With a nothing pick
I'm just not sure why others can't admit that... Surely they don't actually believe it.... A brownlow medallist, premiership player for absolutely Zero and on the cheap..... We were going to be the beneficiaries of his blunders...At NO risk
Personally, I couldn't care less about his personal morals or troubles as long as he trained hard and helped deliver a flag.... Which he MAY well have done...
People arguing like he was a disaster at Richmond are the ones I posted Brett's quote for.... He was invaluable for them, Hardwick has been even stronger...
P66
What's the point of any opinion on here??
What's the point of Teflon bagging Gram, or forecasting selection or analysis of games..... None makes any real difference, it never changes anything.... Scott doesn't read this forum, nor do players, so ineffect it is all speculation and opinion.
What's the point of the Forum?? When it doesn't Count towards anything
I suppose it's just conversation..... Humans like to do that
Questions
Time again, would you have selected BC in 2008 ?? Traded something for Ball in 2009 Traded a FRP for Lovett in 2009
It definitely wasn't hindsight when I stuck my neck out when these things occurred.... And got smashed by the likes of you.
Now it can't even be admitted that those decisions MAY have been costly, when evidence suggests otherwise yeah??

Re: Brett Delidio Quote
It's funny when he was looking like coming to StK for about a week or two
The same posters rolled out the welcome mat and were excusing his behaviour.... After the decision the same posters suggesting we dodged a bullet
Posters who lauded L.Ball, then all of a sudden he was hopeless and a poor character.
And Posters who understood A.Lovett was a woman bashing drunk, yet when he became a 'saint' was the man who was going to deliver a flag, and even after he was charged with sexual assault made excuses for his drafting.... Forgetting what we gave up to secure him
All three of those things happened in 14 months.... And were contradictory.... Suggesting the club had no recruiting policy when bringing people in or exiting people from the club.
Hence the sacking of that dept a year later when the mistakes came further to fruition...

The point of opinions on here are usually to do with current saints players and their form and so on. I still dont see the point of bringing up something that is 5 years old. He was never a saints player so why would we care about a non Saints player that happened 5 years ago. Surely you just brought it up to bag the club. Cant see any other reason.
As for your questions well they can only be answered in hindsight but who knows what would have happened had we drafted him. Things change at different clubs. As for Ball we should have got a pick and Lovett still IMO was worth having a go at. In hindsight I am still not convinced on Cousins, Ball should have been kept and Lovett should never have been picked. In hindsight though I would be the number one recruiter in the AFL. Sorry but I cant remember once smashing you at the time over your opinions on Ball, Lovett or Cousins but hey I could be wrong. If you think questioning posts like this is smashing you then maybe I have.
Re: Brett Delidio Quote
If the forum counts for nothing how could you be sticking your neck out? It means nothing...right?
Why is hardwick's or BD's opinion worth anything more than anyone else who has had direct contact wit BC? of course they are going to say positive things about him...they recruited him. What they're going to say "he was hard yards..because of his issues" or "I couldn't really trust him".
Clubs can and do make mistakes - in this case I think they got it right. If you don't trust the club that's fine but calling people that do apologists is either immature or you just think your argument is superior to others regardless - which is arrogant.

False, if he was no risk, then perhaps someone with those accolades would have been taken before the pre-season draft…BigMart wrote: A brownlow medallist, premiership player for absolutely Zero and on the cheap..... We were going to be the beneficiaries of his blunders...At NO risk
I would have welcomed him to the club, just like a shady Gardiner. The coach and players wanted him, the board over-ruled. Bringing in a renown drug addict is not exactly great PR. Surely you can understand this? The NZ fiasco was bad enough without having Cousins involved, we would have been absolutely slammed "COUSINS LEADING SAINTS YOUNGSTERS DOWN PATH OF DOOM"
So he was just incredibly unlucky with the sleeping tablet incident, what about the drunken punch up with Daniel Conners? Wrong place at the wrong time, he sure is unlucky - great leader, great example. It wasn't all roses at Richmond mate… but of course the club want to put a good spin on a very risky recruit.
Cousins was a great footballer, but a huge risk, if not then he would have been taken well before he did. Like I said during your brilliant Luke Parker thread, you should get into recruiting, you seem to be able to pick all the beauties, all be it 2 years later.
Tom Rockliff went the pick before him in the PSD, personally I think not getting him was a much bigger mistake than missing out on a waning, hamstrung drug addict. We will never know.
Why don't you dig out a post where you were against the Lovett drafting (before he played up)

PJ.... Do you think Hardwick is not honest in his assessment?? He strikes me as anything but....and surely you don't believe that his coaches assessmnt isn't worth more than the average punter. He comes out and says Ben was a mistake.... I change my position.
I think posters arguing for the clubs recruiting in that period are trying to convince themselves, because even the club has acted to remove people responsible for decisions being defended to this day.

The thread in 2008 went for about 10 pages, you led the chorus, come on man!!!
The Luke Ball thread even longer, and was one of the biggest debates we have had.... And there's been just a few
The Lovett one got out of hand.... Nasty indeed.
We took opposing sides (as per usual on all three) this was at the time, not in hindsight....

It was the current board who pulled the pin on us recruiting Cousins, nothing to do with the recruiters or football department.
Re: Brett Delidio Quote
I think Hardwick, particularly prior to their good form, was under the pump as a young coach and tended to be always trying to validate his position or his coaching methods because of the media pressure/speculation. He is honest in a gauarded way - he's never going to say anything that brings unwanted questions. TBH I think he grew tired of answering questions around the cousins media circus so he was always looking to paint the situation in a good light.BigMart wrote:PJ.... I doubt all that very much. The only thing I would have argued regarding Cousins is that you would be saying he would have played the same for us as with Richmond and i may have said no one would know that. I actually doubt I was part of that at all though. As you said I led the chorus you should find that otherwise I beleive you are lying. As for ball I have never once argued we should not have got a pick for him. Again I think you are making it up. The Lovett one I may have argued because I thought it was worth the punt. If you dont find these threads then i will just take it you made that all up.
And I still say yout point of the thread was to have a go at our club. There is no other point for it at all.

Re: Brett Delidio Quote
I can't recall Ross or the club ever publicly commenting negatively about drafting Lovett either, even though it was clearly a disaster in every sense. Football clubs don't tend to come out and admit recruiting mistakes.
