Looking back now and claiming justification for your point of view... If the board overruled a football dept decision they should be outed. They employ a football manager and coach to make decisions. And this board has directly been responsible for a major f*** up.

HTF can business men with limited footy experience or knowledge make AFL level playing decisions???

That's surely a joke?
No, it is not a joke. It is Footy First.

Also it was not a "playing " decision, but rather the rumoured logic behind this was that they were worried about the Jeld Wen Sponsorship.

As for Perovic...if memory serves Fox sold Perovic for the transfer fee to keep the Saints afloat.

bigmart youre comparing two clubs that were like chalk and cheese during the 2008 off season. its no surprise cousins went to Richmond, spoke and the players were blown away. it just shows what everyone knew, richmonds leadership, mentoring and knowledge had been null and void for years.

if he gave the same speech at the saints it'd be preaching to the converted and rehashing what the playing group already knew.

this is the reason richmond wanted him so badly and to help attract some interest at their club. both of which we didnt need.

in terms of playing ability cousins was well and truely past his best. he couldnt even play out a full year in 2009. he didnt play in the midfield either because his body just couldnt take it anymore. he played a sweeping role across half back and was carried by the team to an extent on game day so that he could give them his knowledge, experience and direction.

someone said it, they basically didnt give a kid a game for him. just so they could fill the knowledge gap.

if he played for us in 2009 he would have to have played fwd or back. tell me who you would have dropped in the back 6 or fwd 6 for him. our back 6 was brilliant, we didnt need cousins. likewise our fwd 6 didnt need someone who plods along either. not when we were about intense fwd 50 pressure.

i could get into the stuff that happened over here in perth that you guys in the east just dont know about, but i think the above argument is decent enough!!!

because it only took a couple of days of following him around in perth to see how much gear he was on/taking and who he was getting it from.

People under estimate the effect Cousins had on Gardiner when they were together. We took Cousins on we could have seen Gardi completely fall apart. WCE had such issues with the effect of the Cousins legacy they had to separate premiershipplayersand unraveltheir list.

Judd may have left because of what he saw at WC. Chick and co went completely off the rails. As a team with our own discipline issues the last thing we would have wanted was Rhys, Jack and Cahill on the ice and coke running around NZ. Still we may not have needed to play any home games there if we had some proper stuff ups.

this post cannot be under-estimated. gardi would have been a disaster if cousins came back. i believe gardi is the better for being used as the warning sign for cousins. got dropped to claremont, played and prepared extremely well, then came over to the saints and never looked back.

chick got into a fight with embley for his effect on cousins. it divided the playing group. judd saw it all, he hated it, a work mate saw it first hand at a party that him and half the eagles list attended. judd and the rest of the eagles were like chalk and cheese. didnt help they played him injured when he had OP and was walking like a crab.

the thing that led to the latest cousins arrest was him and a number of ex eagles running drug fuelled parties where they would sell and take drugs. hunter was involved in this, his house was raided around the same time. add to it flat line fletcher and you can see the problem is wide spread and they are the stories that came out, there were plenty more that never saw the light of day.

Questions weren't answered... None

Basically looking for excuses, reality is.... He did nothing but good at Richmond. That cannot be argued. It's been acknowledged by the coach and players.

Who could he have replaced in 2009..... I think he'd make an OK HFF as he played there for Richmond. I know he'd demand more respect from his opponents than our HF's did when they peeled off to double team Nick. Speaking of Nick, I think he would have enjoyed some of delivery by foot of BC. I think he would have been nice coming off the bench, and resting Joey, Dal...

Back to recruiting over 2008/2009.... Why defend it, it was deplorable and after this year 2 out of 22 players recruited will remain... Only 2 players over 40 games, one has since gone to Freo and they were both mature age... They caused a hole in our list Pelchin need to fill, and is trying to do so

The recruiting of Lovett for a FRP with a 3 year deal was a joke......

They were sacked for a reason!

Last questions.... Even though the others weren't answered

Did cousins who was reportedly tested over 100 times in two years test positive???
If we recruited Cousins, and he tested positive..... What would we have lost??

I will however acknowledge that making BC out to be a failure and a disgrace, will help people get over the fact we made a mistake....

Our loss was Richmonds gain, unfortunately in our position we would have gained a bit more....

Ill say it again

Put BC in our 22 in September 2009, we have two flags.... Not sure about 2010

Another can

Put L.Ball in our 22 and out of Collingwoods, we have 3....

Oh well

All you are doing is making selective arguments based on a biased view - you have no idea what Roo really thought of Cuz. He has openly admitted to his issues there is no argument. How would the recruiting of Cousins have improved our recruiters status? To pick him is a no brainer in terms of footy ability, everything else points to sheer negligence bordering on stupidity.

Lovett = nothing to do with it.

Is wine or indeed prescription sleeping pills illegal??

The club or no one else had any issue with that incident .... He had some wine with dinner, and sleeping pills later that night and his body reacted....

He was not in a COMA but was hospitalized.... But anyway.

Man, you are even more naive than I could have ever imagined. Hilarious.

We are talking about the same player that was banned from the game for bringing it into disrepute with his drug addled antics…?

No chance he would have abused booze or prescription medication, not benny C.

BigMart - the ONLY reason the tiges took him on was because their supporters demanded it. They had not done their due diligence on him, and in fact came asking us what we knew about him.

If he was successful for the Tiges it was by luck rather than good management. Easiest thing in the world is to second guess these type of things. Lovett could have ended up being a success (however I agree with you in that he was a lazy, overated, selfish person)

We were good enough to win the thing in 09 - we just didn't. I don't reckon Cousins would have changed that one bit. What you haven't mentioned is that by the end of his career he was injury prone, especially with his hammy. The other thing that can't be factored in, is that the saints were playing in the biggest games of 09/10. H&A and Finals. The intensity in these games can't be compared to the games the tiges played in. Far more likely to snap

Since this thread is about ridiculous hypotheticals, would richmond have taken cousins if they had been in the position they are in now?

I think not. They have something to lose now.

Didn't finish what I was saying - far more likely to do an injury in a high pressured game I reckon. Besides. He was good for the tiges. Was he that good?

+2. the fact remains that cousins himself admitted that his longest sober stint was 3 months!!!!

3 whole months!!! you cannot ignore that. it shows how poor the drug testing is in the AFL. richmond themselves knew he was on and off the wagon. my bet is the afl knew as well. but they wanted a good story out of it. to show how they help a player rehabilitate and all that.

but hey let big mart bury his head in the sand and believe ben cousins was a messiah to our club that we missed out on.

he still hasnt responded to why the pies didnt get him, the issues at west coast, the current issues with that group of players, how richmond 08/09 was different to the saints 08/09, how old cousins was, how cousins body was shot.

you cannot have a debate with him. he'll just ignore the facts and go off on his own tangent thats somehow the only truth. sometimes i dont know who's worse, him or plugger.
