Not resting the stars was worth almost two wins
Not resting the stars against GC may well be worth almost two wins with the large % boost.
Given the tight race this year % may well mean the difference in making the 8, or even possibly a home final.

Agreed. When you get an opportunity to go for percentage, you must go for it.

With the bye in a couple of weeks, resting players would have been a little redundant.
But, percentage is crucial and I am glad we took our best available team out onto the paddock.

Think the win against Adelaide is a bit more of a priority. Rather win both by a point, let's hope we have enough in the tank next week before we jump the gun.

Funny that GC were the ones doing the resting, that was their reason for not playing Horsley

Re: Not resting the stars was worth almost two wins
The thing that helps the team in the long term and also in the short term for a fair dinkum crack at the finals this year, is that more blokes get game time. That's where team depth, management of your older blokes and some tough calls need to be made if you have any aspirations of being a contender with the list that we currently have.
For example if Kosi, Milne and maybe Lenny were rested, do you reckon it would have made 5 or 6 goals difference? Would it have made 10 goals difference? C'mon, I mean it was the Suns ffs?? I reckon even if we had maybe Dal having a week off it might be just the thing to freshen him up for the game against Adelaide.
Personally I would have rested Kosi and 2 other players, especially rest older blokes. If someone else replaced Milne up forward and maybe Sipposs played Kosi's role, don't you reckon that they would've been good enough to kick the extra 5 or 6 that Kos and Milne kicked? Surely the fact that we have depth and competition for spots adds to the effort required by each and every bloke on the list to retain their spot. Another positive that comes out of giving blokes like Sipposs an opportunity as a go to forward would be that he gets experience and can fill that role if we have an injury to Kos or Roo.
Most fans and forumites didn't want anyone rested, but interestingly the players themselves want 2 byes for the 2013 fixture. The consequences of cumulative 6 day breaks in addition to the travel, means you are busting your guts in home and away, and I reckon with a team like ours with warriors in their twilight years, that by the time we get to finals some of those blokes might be spent. We've got Carlton and Geelong in the last few h&a rounds and then hopefully we have everyone right to go in September...Please don't forget that our stars are not all in their early to mid twenties.

Did think of that too. Interestingly Freo only beat the Suns narrowly this year, such is life under Lyon, plenty of perks but big percentage boosters not usually one of them.saintly wrote:so different then last year's game.

Re: Not resting the stars was worth almost two wins
Not resting blokes has consequences.
Almost worth two wins beating the Suns...................but the softest decision and the most selfish decision by Roo the captain and by the leadership group and by the coaches. Why efn take the all older players to Gold Coast and why play them all, when we KNEW that they had to front up again for another INTERSTATER just 6 days later???????????????????????????????????
Who were our worst performers tonight and who looked slow? The older blokes by far. We are good enough to beat Adelaide on equal terms and at any venue, but it's up to the senior blokes to put their hand up and do the EFN TEAM THING. Next time this type of situation confronts us, lead by example ROO....if you rest then maybe Milne, Lenny, Blakey and Kosi might follow

Thought the win last week was great for confidence, and that 4th quarter wouldn't have harmed us either. missed chances though?..thats another matter!

Is percentage better than another 4 points?
Hayes, Milne, Kosi, Roo...
All so incredibly tired last night.

Re: Not resting the stars was worth almost two wins
After the event it appears we stuffed up. Including one or two tired champs gives a team some chance, but playing five or six? If the above named players had been rested last week we would much more likely be looking at two wins, with only a marginal effect on our % which took a bit of a knock last night with the loss anyway.
Yes everyone gets a rest now, but we lost the game, and fatigue almost undoubtedly the deciding factor.

Re: Not resting the stars was worth almost two wins
Roo was stuffed before the game started and looked restricted as the game went on. He is a champion and he had an impact, but how much more effective would he have been if he didn't have to play against GC last week. Kosi looked fatigued and slow for nearly all game as did Blakey and Lenny looked tired, Milney was off sorts, and of the other guys who are younger....BJ looked OK, Joey wasn't fatigued, Jack Steven wasn't, Millera wasn't, Armo wasn't. Gilbo certainly wasn't. The deciding factor was fatigue in the older blokes

Re: Not resting the stars was worth almost two wins
Maybe worth one extra win sometimes, but never two. The only way % comes into the mix is when 2 or more sides finish with the same points. So even if our percentage is 1000% we will never leapfrog a side even 2 points clear of us. An extra goal against either of the Adelaide teams would have been worth more than a million goals against Gold Coast.

The first win is obvious as we won = 4 points.
The "almost" is from the % boost.

You're assuming we would have lost if we had rested our stars?
Otherwise you can't count the four points plus percentage.

All so incredibly tired last night.
Yes the Saints lost because they were tired. The problem with your logic though that is that the last ten minutes of the game when fatigue should have counted the most, is that the Saints ran all over the Crows.
Fatigue was actually null factor in the result.
Why the Saints lost was due to HOW we played the game, and not because they did not have the puff.
Once they adjusted the gameplan to force the Cows into contested ball errors with a ring of Saints around the contest to then be exploited by having players on the outside for fast break aways is how we almost one the game. The poor first half when Watters was spanked coaching wise is why we lost.
Fresh players doing the wrong thing, would still have been players doing the wrong thing.
If we are to win 7/10 games to make the finals it will be because the Saints sharpen up their poor first halves.....and not due to overcoming fatigue.
All year we have run out games well.
All year when the players are super fresh we have started poorly.
We have to fix the HOW...and not the PUFF>>>>

Re: Not resting the stars was worth almost two wins
The thread title doesn't read that way. But anyway you look at it, a huge percentage boost is worth less than a draw so the game against Gold Coast was less than 1.5 wins and certainly nowhere near two.saintsRrising wrote:No..the intent of the thread was that not resting the starts mad the GC game worth almost two wins.kosifantutti wrote:You're assuming we would have lost if we had rested our stars?

I didn't say the team was tired, I said those older bodies were.
They hardly starred in the late comeback.

Lenny and Milne were both good late. As was Joey. Indeed most of the team was good late.
Kosi's problem is not being tired....it is in his head. He is very much a "confidence" player and is up and down due to it.
In all the games that I have seen this season that we have lost it has been for reasons other than tiredness....and indeed the aspects that we have in the main got wrong have been in the first quarter of games when "tiredness" is not a factor.
We do not need rest. We need to start games better.
This is not just the players, but Watters who has gotten various match ups wrong early on.
10 games to go. We need to pull our fingers out now in the first half of games.
