"I have never seen someone so focussed on team performance. The first time he spoke up at a midfield meeting when he arrived for the 2009 season, everyone's jaw dropped. It was like 'this bloke seriously knows his S***'"

I've also been intrigued by the arguments supporting the club on this decision. Some of the most ridiculous statements I have read on SS really. I was definitely a target at the time for disagreeing with the decision to overlook Cousins for a nothing pick, for little salary due to attitudinal reasons... Who is a known Champion. On the way down admittedly, but with three things still to offer a footy club
-Leadership and knowledge from a successful culture
-Proven personal performance and an extreme attitude toward personal success
-outstanding execution of run and spread (particularly gut run)

Richmond got exactly what they wanted from Cuz, leadership, mentoring, performance, membership and smelling like roses after giving a champion a second chance at it.... We dropped the ball

What was even more interesting was just 7 months later STK trade for a guy with a first round pick, give him a three year 1M dollar contract. This bloke was a serial under achiever, known to be lazy, disliked and inconsistent. the fact we gave up so much for Lovett made the decision costly

There is NO doubt that in hindsight a woeful decision was made, I think the lovett Trade was in some partan attempt to make up for the mistake the previous year.

Not surprisingly the list manager and recruiters of the 2008/2009 period are gone..... IMO they cost us two flags.

This again...

Really?

Let it go BM, it's 3 years ago and nothing to do with the current coach.

Our biggest mistake was not to get Peter Hudson. Cost us ten flags.

It could be argued that the Saints already had these qualities covered more so than the Tigers.
Can't argue with the drafting of AL one year later though :?

Someone made a post in 2009 ... that if we had taken Cousins ... McQualter may not have played Week 1 2009 ... and would not have kicked the sealing goal late in the match ... which meant we would have lost Round 1 ... gone across to Football Park down on confidence, and Cousins would have done his hamstring halfway through the match, leaving us 1 player short and with a 5-point difference at 3-quarter time ... and the Crows would have run over the top ... the players would have got frustrated with Lyon's game plan, and we would have been 0-2 ...

The point is that you can be as revisionist as you like as look at as many "what if's" as possible, but it's all speculation.

We hardly needed leadership from Cousins - we had Harvey, Hayes, Riewoldt, Maxie etc. Whereas Richmond (as a young side) needed this desperately.
We had the Michael Gardiner factor - who knew what Mick had said to the club about Cousins? He may have warned them off? The Saints may have also thought we needed a fit ruckman more than another onballer ... and didn't want both to get in trouble as they had done at WCE.

Whilst I agree with you that Cousins could have contributed something on-field (particularly in the finals series with his experience in place of someone like Robert Eddy), I think that "overall" the club made the right decision.

I don't think the Cousins decision cost us a flag.

There are way too many elements that go into a premiership to argue that it comes down to 1 player.

IMO the Lovett mistake was a far bigger factor in costing us a chance to win in 2010 ... than the Cousins decision was in costing us in 2009 ...

Just interesting IMO

Many experts on here are convinced it was the right decision not to draft him, and he was not even successful at Richmond. I think they should hear what Delidio has to say.

I should just let it go, it cannot be changed... But it was both a big mistake, and a bad mistake at the time.....as I said, all it cost was the ultimate... Twice

Why would cuz have done his hammy in R2

Different game, different ground, different temp, different movement, different position, different opposition, different pre season...... Just a few variables??

Hamstring go in situations, not according to time in life

In R1 cousins may have been BOG with 27 possessions and we win by 4 goals??

Who knows what would've happened??

What I'm saying is he would have improved our bottom 6 which was a weakness, improved our disposal which was a weakness, improved our run and carry which was a weakness and even assisted our guns with his knowledge off field and support on field

One thing I do know he would not have missed a goal from 15m out in a grand final, or get less than 10 touches

You

Yes Benny could have had a profound influence on our players.
Our midfield would probably now be lying in the gutter outside Crown covered in white powder.

Culture has always been an issue with St.Kilda whether that is perceived or actual. The recruiting of Ben was in the opinion of those running the club at the time too much of a risk. Given our depth at the time of leaders and midfielders the decision was understandable. The recruiting of Lovett is an entirely different question as they fulfilled different needs.

Ben was and remains a risk to himself and those around him regardless of what Delidio says - that is a fact.

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

To kick a sealing goal then surely we would have been ahead by a bit anyway?

Is this the same Brett Delidio who said on the footy show that "Black Cavier's package in that compression suit looks about the same as mine" when pics of both were put up on screen !!

He had to offer something... Because he definitely didn't offer performance. Especially being injuried.

Maybe Cusins could have provided all this leadership and mentoring to OUR developing midfield. Players spike Lenny Hayes Dal Santo Montagna Ball Goddard.

And Lovett was a very good player. A player that would have added performance wise to our team.

Oh yeah and Cousins was an ice addict. He still is an ice addict. Had been suspended out of the game by the AFL, and by his previous club.... At least Lovett was actually abled to be traded for - A situation that was not available for Cousins.

Delicious.

FFS.

That is all.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

Looks like a Cousins cooking show. Apron on, milk out. About to make a chocolate milkshake perhaps.

All this post tells me is that BM doesn't watch players from other teams, and especially didn't watch Cusins while at Richmond. Posting on his previous accomplishments rather than the value he provided the Tigers.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Actually watch other teams play BM rather then when they just play St Kilda.
