DISCIPLINE - FREE KICKS & 50 METRES

I have attended all our Melbourne games including our intra club match at Seaford. Initially, we give to many head high tackles away whether in general play or out of frustration in our forward line (i.e. didn’t take the mark so grab the opposition around the neck to wrestle with or sling tackle him, exception, Nick just goes back on the mark). This gives the opportunity to alleviate the pressure for the side’s defensive line. (I’m sick of it). The ones around the ground are just easy effortless that presently shouldn’t exist there. All players are familiar with you can’t grind players into the ground but we still do it. (Some players more than others need to learn how to tackle at the hips trying to keep a hand trapped).
Succeeding high tackles, the further thing that gets my goat is (50 metre penalty) is nearly in soccer terms a shot in the box. Players have to understand that in excess of over 100 years an umpire has not been conversed into changing his decision and it doesn’t help when you swear at him and argue continuously about the freekick. Going over the mark, running through the mark, not throwing the ball back on the full, knocking the ball out of the players hand and defending late just to seem like you made an contest, just to name a few. A 50 metre especially with the hard presses is an element of the game our side should never grant another side. When you get down to the nuts and bolts of it 50 metres penalty is a great kick that has been marked by the opposition down the line uncontested. This inevitably sets a goal up the majority of times. Past precedence has proved this fact.

This is in refence to the year to date not just the Dorks game.

Your trolling yeah? We gave to frees for to high on Saturday night one was an incorrect call by the ump the other was unavoidable. As for the fifties we have been reamed this year with the ticky toch ones while receiving non in return for far worse BJs v Freo one that springs to mind.

Too harsh a penalty for most discretions, the umpires are sooks about abuse these days and need to stop looking for penalties and just ejudicate.

It has more to do with the fact St.Kilda never get 'sudden death' 50 metre penalties, nor do we seem to get the benefit of free kicks that could go either way. Also, is there a special rule allowing Roo & Milney to be manhandled off the ball?

Time for a 25 metre penalty. The old 15 was too short but 50 way too harsh.

The 15m penalty was abolished because of Sheedy.
He instructed his midfield players to hold up play until their defence was in place despite giving away 15m.
As long as they were more than 70m from goal it was an insignificant penalty compared to closing down the opposition forwards.

The result was the 50m penalty which suitably punished such deliberate offences.

But the 50m penalty is waaaay too harsh for trivial offences such as not throwing the ball back on the full, or hanging on slightly too long, running across the mark whilst the player taking the kick is still lying on the ground etc.

I think the umpire should have the discretion to pay
25m penalties for the ticky-touch-wood frees described above
OR
50m penalties for when someone comes in late and pole-axes an opponent or engages in other rough/dangerous play

I will maintain that 90% of 50s paid are a blight on the game and agree that 25 is heaps more appropriate.

You shitstirrers for my spelling, Im from the country - thats my excuse, but you get the gist of my thred. Lets still blame the umpires for their mistakes but also avoid our mistakes will half the battle. (By the way Administartors were is the spell check......haha).
