Middle sized defenders

Post: # 1215884Post Con Gorozidis »

Wow our recruiters must have had a real fetish. We can build a team purely from medium sized defenders/half back flanker types.

fisher
gram
winmar
clarke
simpkin
gilbert
dempster
gwilt
blake
goddard

thats 10 blokes that pretty much play a similar role/positon.

That's obviously why we then got Jimmy Webster in the draft last year, instead of someone like Jackson Paine. Juat to keep all them company.

And they certainly weren't all recruited as defenders

yes.
blake is only 189cm .
gilbo is the tallest of those 3 you mentioned and he doesnt play tall at all evrr. he is certainly not a KPP.
e.g he played on cyril on the weekend.
and sam f never plays KP. So yes all medium sized flankers.
and yes throw in jimmy webster so they all dont get lonely down there :-) ao thats 11!

blake is actually 191 cm.....and has been saying so for years....same as goddard...he's not 189cm either....more like 192cm these days...both of them taller than plugger was at 190cm....hardly medium sized defenders ffs...

Fisher was recruited as a key forward and spent his early days in the forward line.

It just happens that he struggled up there but was able to make a go of it in defence when we were hit with injuries to our key defenders (Hudgton & Penny).

So please tell me why saying that he was recruited as a forward should be considered retarded

so my objective was to name medium sized half back flankers on our senior list. which i did.

and ur telling me fisher doesnt fit in to that category?

ok. fisher is not a medium sized half back flanker. suit yourself.
ill just pretend he hasnt played 200 games in that position/been named AA there/and won a b & f there.

so sorry yes. take his name off the list.

(i never said i made a list of of what players we recruited as. i couldnt give a monkey what they were 'recruited' as. i care what they ACTUALLY are in the real world).

so ill say it again
we have 11 players on our sr list who fit in the category "medium sized defenders"

argue me all day and all night on it if u like.

Who's arguing Con!

Your OP is about our recruiters having a real fetish about middle sized defenders.

I simply made the comment that they weren't all recruited as defenders

You then replied "dont say fisher was recruited as a fwd or something retarded" to which I responded that he was recruited as a forward and asked why that coment is considered retarded.

Of course he is a defender now - when have I ever said anything different?

Chill out fella 8-)

Further to the above Con, your post was about the recruiters and an apparent fetish for defenders.

However the recruiters have little say in what happens to a player once they land at a club. Some blokes start out in other positions and later on find a niche in defence. And some start off learning their trade in defence before moving to other parts of the ground. If after all that we end up with a truckload of defenders then so be it.

And in recognition of that I would suggest in recent drafts we’ve targeted midfielders and forwards.

Maybe someone could compare our defenders in size to say Geelong and Collingwood?

If fisher is a CHB why does he not play on a Key Fwd???

I Agree, he is (or plays like) a medium..... Which he should not IMO

Simpkin should not be on that list.... Whilst not big, pays KP

Your fascination amazes me. Chips is a CHB. Pure and simple. We try to get him free because he uses and thinks the best in our backline.

So we free up a key defender???...... Sound contradictory

Does that mean if he's 'freed up' he's not playing the role of a KEY DEFENDER????

I can see where Con is coming from. We have not recruited a big defender for yonks. Jackson Ferguson is our "big white hope" at 194cm and holding down CHB at VFL level. But we continue to recruit medium size players, and not the big fellas. We did recruit Lever, but god knows what role the recruiters see him filling, he is so light.

I am saying I dont puport to get into the minds or the intentions of recruiters (that would get weird) - just saying when all is said and done - our recruiters have certainly done a good job of getting medium sized defenders of a similar nature to the club.
I cant speak for their original "intentions" only the outcome which reveals a fetish!
Anyway I dont want to get an argument with Dr spaceman as he is my favourite poster! So i will agree to disagree politely :-)
