Re: Dempster on Franklin
I'm with both of you.
Did I read the stats right that he only took 4 marks inside 50 for the night, and they were all contested?
Trouble to me seemed to be when the ball spilled, he was still in the contest....

Re: Dempster on Franklin
I thought the match highlighted both teams' issues defensively. Kosi and Roo played great games as did Franklin and Rioli and if we had somehow jagged a few more goals out of our forward duo at certain times the game could have gone a bit differently. Needless to say the Hawks were the better team on the night.mad saint guy wrote:At the game I thought Denpster did an admirable job with very little support from other defenders. No one in the competition can stop Franklin when he is on fire and no one at St Kilda would have restricted him more.
Geary on Rioli is the matchup that really didn't work out and Watters should have made the switch earlier.
Who else could have gone to Franklin? I for one do not understand why Sam Fisher could not have gone to him from the beginning as he is one of the best defenders in the league. Yes he can play great loose cleaning up and chopping out however when the time comes for a quality defender to do his primary role he should be given the task. We have more than enough players that are capable of playing loose but more importantly impacting the contest as desired.
Re: Dempster on Franklin
Sam has had to do that role before on Buddy..... And on Pav, Goodes, brown and others, he is the #1 Defender (possibly in the AFL) his job should have been The Big One
Anyone can sag off, Gilbert, Goddard, Dal whoever....
Soft Option

Re: Dempster on Franklin
If Fisher goes to Franklin he'll still kick 5 goals and we lose our best rebounder. Dempster did nothing wrong and Fisher wouldn't have done any better. In the first half it worked well with Fisher in fantastic form, even kicking a goal as the loose man. Cutting/slowing the supply and getting numbers back faster were the only ways we'd seriously restrict Franklin.

Re: Dempster on Franklin
It was not so much shutting Buddy down....as that Demspter would most likely have kept Cyril a lot quieter.
So rather than both dominating only one would have.
Having said that. Midfield and turnovers is where we lost it.

I reckon Dempster did a fantastic job, all things considered.
He gave it his all for his size and was just one out too many times.

Re: Dempster on Franklin
4 marks inside 50 was all he allowed him, the fact he still managed to have 11 shots on goal says more about Buddy than Sean.
How many goals were kicked on Sean up until this round?
Defence has been really solid, even with everyones misgivings coming into the year.

Wolfy, Buddy had 11 shots at goal. Dempster may have tried hard. Fantastic job. I don't think so.howlinwolf wrote:I'm with you MSG.mad saint guy wrote:If Fisher goes to Franklin he'll still kick 5 goals and we lose our best rebounder. Re: Dempster on Franklin
I really think people are missing the point here. Sainter K - noone is criticising dempster at all. I know hes your boy and u rush to his defence but im not having a got at him. Its nothing against him at all.SainterK wrote:4 marks inside 50 was all he allowed him, the fact he still managed to have 11 shots on goal says more about Buddy than Sean.

The issue is all players have specialties - its no criticism of milera if the coach put him in the ruck against sandilands and he got toweled up.
The issue is Lyon trialled and errored and he then settled sean on mediums and shorts. IN the last 18 months sean NEVER played on a tall - even when zac was injured. This was the making of him as a good player (and why he finished 3rd in the b&f).
So noone is having a go its just understanding what each players specialty is. It was crap coaching. No two ways about it.
And yes our defence has been excellent this year. Realty is we have played some awful forward lines (until the hawks).

I find it difficult to understand those that cannot handle criticism on our players and coach. It was the same with Lyon. If you didn't agree with something he did there were those to rush to his defence. He wasn't perfect, neither is Watters. Playing Dempster on Buddy and not on Rioli was tactically an extremely poor move on Watters behalf. I hope he's learnt from it.

therabbitinthehat wrote:Franklin was always going to be an issue, and I assume the plan was to have fisher double team him while playing the lose back - that fell apart when fish went off and the matchups should have been redone, probably gilbo to buddy and dempster onto rioli. Another option would have been to pull blake from ruck to go to buddy and rotate stanley and kosi in the ruck and use gilbo as a forward option. I just don't think Scotty reacted well enough tbh
our biggest hole was the big mac cut off mark out on the defensive 50, broke the chain and allowed them easier access to the top of the goal square.

Re: Dempster on Franklin
Amazing the witch hunting going on.
Hawks a premiership favourite and we pushed them to the brink sans Fisher for a half, without our number one ruckman, with Armitage nursing a possible vertebra injury (whatever the case, hampered), and Dempster (sick all week) taking Franklin out of necessity.
But for polish we're in front at 3 qr time and the heat is burning Hawthorn arse...
Not making excuses, but in a development year (it is, deal with it) I thought it was pretty really encouraging night. Steven, Saad, Simpkin all admirable. Having three newbies contribute so heavily in the one game is great. Yes, Saad's contribution was late, but his impact was instant and showed poise lacking in others.
Midfield is where it's at. Dal simply must bust tags and we must improve clearance work. Our fwd structure is POTENT when ball is delivered fast. Note our surge late in game.
Clearance. Bang. Clam. Goal. Simple game if you smash the centre. Win or lose, I want to see us go toe to toe with Blues in middle next week. Test against the best mid in the land.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

its not witch hunting
and hawks premiership favourite- please. they are VERY beatable. Their defence is a joke. they simply cant make top 4.
its called having a memory. memory tells me that everyone knows dempster is a gun on small to medium fwds.
it is this reason the term "you have been DEMPSTERED" came about 12 months ago. This is because the guy has shown great ability to shut down smalls and medoums. so he was the natural choice for cyril.
