Looking at the footage, he's guilty as sin.

Off the ball, no accident.

But was it medium or low impact is the real issue?

IMO it was low impact...that would reduce it to one week with the priors and loadings.

Prob not worth trying to take it on on that basis....you either try and get it chucked out
or cop it on the chin.

On what basis do you think he's guilty as sin?

Genuine question based on the fact that what I see is a Joey kind of out of control as a result of being slung the ground. I can't see any intent on his part at all beyond having a bit of rank and file push and shove with a scragger. Any contact to Magner's head is surely accidental as a result of being slung. Surely Magner's slinging has to be considered relevant? What am I missing here?

And then, on the other hand, I see Taylor Walker slide/jump with both knees -hands nowhere to be seen, no apparent interest in ball - square into Jacob Surjan's head. Goodes lost his shot at a Brownlow for something considerably less sinister.

In a season of baffling umpiring and MRP stuff, I've now been super-baffled...

I don't care if we lose this...We need to start holding the MRP accountable.
They've seriously stuffed up three reports this season.
1. The Whitecross report against Selwood...Clearly Selwood contributed the contact by running into a stationary Whitecross.
2. The Lindsay Thomas incident against Garry Rohan. Thomas was first to the ball and protected the ball by turning his body and also protected his head...The old Darryl Baldock adage of never put your head somewhere where your bum will fit.
3. The Steve Johnson report...similar to the other incidents.

In this case, Magner clearly initiates the hold and drags Montagna to the ground. In his attempts to get away from the contest, Joey nicks Magner on the cheek either with his hand or, more likely, his knee. That is not striking. The contact was initiated by Magner and Joeys actions are to break the hold and get to the next contest...In all honesty, a 50m penatly should have been awarded to us as we had the free kick and Magner prevented Montagna from being involved in the next phase of play (just like the free to Sydney against Hawthorn).

The MRP have seriously lost the plot this season.

everyone was questioning the incident
so i took screen shots pav

so the usuals could keep arguing.
just providing a service

originally i thought it was accidental
looked accidental
commentators said it looked accidental
numerous peeps have said it looked accidental
joey would be the only one who knew if it was accidental or deliberate

knowing the tribunal/mrp im tipping he;ll be resting up for 3 weeks

Great post. The MRP is horribly inconsistent. Clubs need make them accountable.

My only worry is that we have a horrible history and managing these incidents. The arguments our club use are horrible. Other clubs contest these things better.

I noticed a few of our boys were rather chummy with Magner after the game and maybe Joey plain did not like him?

I know with that kicking ability I would not like him either.

I think he clipped him with his knee as they go to ground.

There is no charge to answer here.

Accidental contact. He will get off.

Actually I think it was Steve Johnson.

Bakes got five weeks.

But we all know it was David Strooper on the grassy gnoll.

@AFL_PKeane Leigh Montagna Tribunal Charge withdrawn this afternoon by AFL legal counsel Jeff Gleeson. Montagna now clear to play v Hawthorn in rd six.

Gleeson was made aware St Kilda would call J Magner as part of Montagna defence, with evidence contact was caused by an accidental knee.

Full reasons from Mr Gleeson for his decision to withdrawn the charge shortly on http://afl.com.au

MRP - pulling charges because they have realised its accidental.
what a joke - throwing charges at someone in the hope that something sticks. seriously, gets my goat.

What the cameras don't show well here is the lateral movement. I had a clear view as I was sitting on the 50m line at the game. Magner initiated the wrestle as Joey was trying to run ahead of the play into the forward line. They both grabbed each others jumpers and following a brief tussle, Manger pulled Joey to the ground. It was already quite wet ground at that stage and as Joey was trying to stay upright, he came down on his knees and slid sideways in the direction that Magner was pulling him. Unfortunately his right knee dropped right onto Magner's cheek, so as he quickly pushed upwards to stand, all of his downward force went onto the cheekbone. Absolutely nothing malicious or intentional about it, you could see Joey knew what happened straight away and threw his arms up as if to say 'there was nothing I could have done'. With the amount of sideways movement he would have no way of controlling where his knee landed.
Personally, despite his posession count and the soccered goal on Saturday, I don't think Joey has really contributed much in the past month of footy. Used to be our inside 50 king, but hasn't been giving us the usual drive and speed on the wing, so I'd love to see Ledge or Siposs being given a crack. No great loss if he gets suspended but very stiff nonetheless. Right decision to challenge it.

EDIT: Good to see charges just dropped. Right decision.
