Mcevoy -33 in hitout count !

Post: # 1212236Post WinnersOnly »

Mcevoy -33 in hitout count ! I have said it before but we are never going to be a top 4 side with this guy as our No 1 ruckman. Jamar absolutely destroyed him tonight & McEvoy didn't even give a peep! I can't believe people have touted him as our next captain. IMO the club has really erred with not going after another ruckman over the break. He might be a nice guy but he is never going to be a nice tap ruckmen.

Personally I really like Mcevoy. Work horse who does the 1% and gets to the contest. Also has good hands and a solid kick. With Kosi providing relief when necessary and Stanley improving every game I can't see a major problem- unless Mcevoy gets injured.

Exactly no club can afford to wait that long for a player to improve - the club needed to recruit an older ruckmen to fill the void!

The more time McEvoy spends as our lead ruckman the quicker he will develop.

We did, several times.

Do you think you'd be complaining had we recruited an older ruckmen this year as well? After all the most common complaint I have heard is we aren't playing enough kids.

Jamar was all australian last year !!!
so i think in those conditions he was always going to be beaten.
the giant killed him last week too .
there are half a dozen ruckmen around who he will struggle against , at least he is competitive

Carlton have 4 , Geelong took Stephenson, Hawks picked up 2, WCE have 3 , surely they could find 1 if they tried!

Kosi can play in the ruck. Unfortunately he was suspended tonight. He'll be back next week.

In an article in Friday's Age, about North losing patience with Todd Goldstein and dropping him because of his deterioration in form cf 2011, they produced an interesting table.

The table was of ruck contests won i.e. as a % of those contested by the individual.

For 2011 the top 5 were;
Goldstein - 78%
McEVOY - 67%
Leuenberger - 65%
Mumford - 63%
Cox - 55%

First 4 rounds of 2012;
Seaby - 75%
Mumford - 75%
Sandilands - 74%
Jamar - 74%
Jacobs - 65%

always interesting to see people 'rating' a young ruckman
I wonder were you would put Nic Nat 'winnersonly'
there was a list produced on one of the numerous shows the other night that he is Not even in the top 10 for marking- something that ( apart from the weather) Ben is very good at in any part of the ground

do you have figures for how he stand with other ruckman ' of his age' currently?

You can play the stats lots of ways. Did you notice that 30% of McEvoy's hitouts were to advantage, compared with Jamar's 13%.

Big Ben is developing very nicely in my book and ha smuch more upside to come - not just in the ruck but around the ground as well. Did you see how good he was with his hands low to the ground with a wet ball??

Love his engine and his marking but I can't see him getting any quicker or jumping any higher than he is now. That's what I worry about with him.

That's true but he will get a bit stronger and will get better at positioning and "ruck craft" in the contests as he gains experience and confidence.

Oren Stephenson has a zimmer frame and needs 12 passes for his grandchildren to attend match and is straight from the vfl. If people don't think Wilkes has an upside Stephenson isn't a great example. Carlton were so desperate for rucks they are paying Rooey money to warnock who is average at VFL level and would look Macca look like Polly Farmer and Simon Madden in one. WCE have had Cox for ever and Natanui is still developing.

Hawks were getting canned for playing Mccauley on the radio so he must have had a great game. I'm not sure that is a great list of mature rucks available. The best second rucks are Bellchambers who knows Hille is over the hill. And Goldstein who is struggling now he's been demoted to second ruck. Jamar only came on after Melbourne off loaded Jolly and needed to play him as their first ruck before he was ready.

Melbourne supporter here - I'd just like to point out that we had to wait an effing long time for Jamar to be even considered competent, let alone a good ruckman. Have some patience - it's cliché in footy circles to crap on about how big men take time, but it holds true for all but the most athletically gifted big men.

McEvoy had more hit outs to advantage than Jamar (9 vs. 7).

Getting your fingernail on the ball first when it drops straight down into a pack and goes into a ball-up situation is fairly pointless.

A ruckman who can direct hitouts to advantage is more important than one who can win pure numbers ... McEvoy does well in this area. He is still young and still improving. As the Melbourne supporter said, Jamar took years and years to come good

What annoys me about mac is , who instructs him where to hit the ball . when he gets first hand to it , 9 times out of 10 he taps the ball to his feet where nobody is !
I have rarely seen him hit it more than ten metres .
Last night is the prime example where in wet weather footy you bash it as far forward as you can get , yet all seemed to go straight to ground , where if lenny or dal didn't get it , a melbourne player did , they won the clearances despite us outplaying for most of the second half.
