Not only do the Pies have a strangehold on Anzac Day, but they seem to have one on Queens Birthday Monday as well!

Melbourne are the fortunate other party to this nice bit of AFL-endorsed collusion, which is madness.

Surely Queens Birthday could be shared around, even if Anzac Day can't?

Why should ONE club get the exclusive benefit of TWO standalone fixtures every year pretty much?

I really hope some of the club's presidents are trying to make a stand about this fiasco, as it is clearly unfair and unecessary.

I'm thankful they aren't resisting our push for an ANZAC game in NZ.

I'm pretty sure the Filth don't get anything from this game. It is always a Dreamon home game and they always get the proceeds. From what I understand the Filth would be happy not to play on the Queen's Birthday but do so because the AFL wants them to with the AFL thowing the Dreamons a bone and its a bit of a pay-off/pay-back for Anzac Day I think.

By the way, the non-member ticket revenue from the Anzac Day game between the Filth and Essenscum is shared by all the clubs, not just those participating - also a pay-off/pay-back for them keeping the game.

if the AFL were fair dinkum about Anzac day and honoring the diggers any profit would be given to legacy or the RSL it ought not be a money making day for either club.

How about sponsorship exposure... increased membership sales because it's another block buster day game that gives you more value to a membership.

If the non-member ticket revenue is that great from Anzac day then there'd be no problem for them sharing the day then.

The rich get richer, and the poor are forced to put their hand out because they don't get an opportunity to make their own.

As soon as Demetriou moves on the poorer clubs will go if the welfare system that is in place is deserted.

They have an opportuntiy to give the poorer clubs a crack at these block busters, Essendon and Collingwood would get 80,000 no matter what day they played on.

Can't have a fair draw with this many teams and rounds. I think the AFL actually used that as a justification not long ago for the fixture - why try to make it fair if it can't be? Bless their souls.

We used to play Hawthorn on the Queens Birthday holiday at VFL park. Then suddenly we lost that fixture. Probably down to the vested interests at Hawthorn supporting the merger with Melbourne at the time.
Then we were going to play an Easter Monday fixture with Richmond every year until they went behind our backs and tried to court Collingwood - so we pulled out of the arrangement.
So both times we have been scuppered by self-interest at more powerful clubs than our own. Personally now I hope we go ahead and play Brisbane in Wellington each ANZAC day. I have always wanted to go there, now I have a great excuse.
