Newnes v Ledger

Post: # 1210587Post Con Gorozidis »

I have no idea what the internal issue has been but Newnesy is not quite ready for AFL at this stage.
Ledger could have been the difference in 2 full games.

They play different positions, but I get where you are coming from…

Gram for Newnes for mine, Ledger for Polo

Ledger is a good player but maybe it's a team balance thing as we can't play too many smalls ?? .. we already have Montagna and Milne with Schneider hopefully returning soon.
We also have Saad (who might need to prove himself first ?).

That's 5 genuine smalls who may be in contention right now or in the near future ? .. 6 if you count Connors, when he puts his hand up and Steven is barely 180cms... so we have 7 smalls !!

There's room for maybe 2 smalls or 3 smalls but 7 does not go into 2 or 3 spots unfortunately.

How many 170 - 179 players do other sides play ? ,,, it would be interesting to compare.

Balance is the key.

I thought I saw some flashes of brilliance from Newnes - for a youngster he looks great. Give him time and he'll gain the confidence and poise.
Would like to see more of him.
Seems we are never satisfied. Play the old dogs and the youngsters should have had a run - play the youngsters and they are not good enough.
I'm happy to let some of these youngsters run with the likes of Lenny, BJ, Dal, Roo et al, some of the flair and work ethic will rub off.

How about if you say how many under 6 footers (183cm) then there are plenty of sides with more than 2 smalls

not all of these are playing at once of course but…

Carlton have 10 under 183cm (most are regulars)
Simpson, Scotland, Curnow, Armfield, Yarran, Murphy, Joseph, Garlett, Ellard, Betts

Geelong have 8 (5-6 def starters)
Byrnes, Christensen, Stokes, Chapman, Varcoe, Wojinski, Hogan, Selwood

The pies are a bit all over the place with injury but have 8 (5 def when fit)
Blair, Krakour, Sidebottom, Yagmoor, Clarke, Fasolo, Rounds, Sinclair

Hawks have 8 (7 regulars) 6 are 179 or under!
Puopolo, Bateman, Rioli, Osborne, Hill, Mitchell, Sewell, Guerra

So I guess there isn't a magical number, if they're good enough they should play.

I'm loving scotty's coaching !
Yes , Newnes has been not that great , however he is getting game time and eventually his confidence will grow .
lyon didn't the kids a chance . if they didn't perform they were out !
ledger , lynch , stanley and simpkin were hardly given a chance last year !
understandible if it was 2009
All have looked better this year under new coaches. ( lynch at adelaide )
Walsh wasn't given a chance at all and we lost him to the swans .

Watching sandy play yesterday and seeing the likes of ray , gram and peake running around it tells me were on the right track . these senior players aren't going to a game on reputation .

Newnes got about 15 disposals against the dogs and is a very clean kick and composed. Cripps was recruited as a running half back flanker but hasn't looked great there in the NAB. The pressure the backs are under now zoning is common makes a lot look messy. Newnes was exposed by Lyon as he was made more accountable for a player and not just running to space for a link up. Everyone wants kids played and the moment that a guy in his 3rd game fails to get 30 possessions he needs to be dropped. I would give them all at least 5 straight games to see if they settle then decide on another couple.

Cripps looks great as a sub forward as he has pace and enthusiasm, probably long term he will be that running back in a Heath Shaw type of role he just isn't quite there yet.

Ledger is being kept out by our established mids at the moment.

Why does cripps have to be a running back when he seems to be doing okay up forward? Sam Fisher was recruited as a forward but hasn't played there since.

2 of those 4 you mentioned were injured. Lynch was given 5 games and IMO didnt do anywhere near enough. Simpkin had a taste and wasnt quite ready. Key back for a young guy is a hard position to play. Walsh just may not have been good enough. Certainly isnt at the moment at the Swans.

Lyon had the misfortune to be at the club in the main when our recruiters were amongst the worst in the AFL. Ditto for GTs last several year.

The first year we got a decent batch of young draftees he played them till they all go injured.

Of the BETTER kids we actually recruited most have over time gotten games. Problem was we got a lot duds, or players not worth where they were taken. it was no accident that Lyon went for so many recycled players. With a recruiting department poor at choosing kids he went another path.

Steven keeps getting tooted as not playing, but he was injured several times including the finals when various posters claim he should have played.

Well so far has not been an automatic senior selection at the Swans..so as a minimum the Swans must believe he has a bit to go yet too.

Some good balanced comments above. Good to see contention for spots. Hopefully Ledger does get a run - not as Sub - soon. Or we won't know. We need to see these young players and build depth. The lack of it has cost the Saints in the GFs in 09 and 10. I'm still confused by the fact he was named twice then omitted just before each game. I'm not wanting to take from those other players but do think he could give us a real edge. He goes in for contested footy but also has a bit of outside pace and can kick long. Clearly The coaches have a different view here.

Both good kids....

I'll have a stab at where I see our kids in order from 2009 onwards in order if I had to draft them
Seb Ross.......... Great attitude, tough
Aaron Siposs......smooth
Jack Newnes......very nice all round player
Tom Ledger........tough, hunts the ball, quick inside
Tom Simpkin......has a real dip, competitor
Daniel Markworth.........size and athleticism, could have huge scope
Daniel Minchington....... Really rate him
Jamie Cripps..........good athlete
jimmy Webster..........nice footballer, HBF/Wing
Jack Ferguson.......Project CHB, good athlete, has scope
Tom Curran........small, tough as nails, strong
Warrick Andreloi........outside runner with skills
Daniel Archer.......strong KPP
Nick Winmar........utility with good kick
Sam Crocker........small, outside good kick

Wow big raps for Jimmy Webster have you seen him play, I haven't heard anything about his progress other than a crazy old man in hobart telling me he's something special and watch out for him. Markworth looks likely but has shown much yet and would be a fair way down my ladder as he's seen more long term IMO.

When did I say that??

I was rapt he was drafted, more than most on here would have been, for obvious reasons....

I did mention that when I asked a boy who played at Dandy Stingrays with him about it (because I hadn't seen him for Twelve months) and he said he was surprised, and said don't expect him to chase or pass the ball.... Could have been sour grapes which I mentioned

What I did say was when Arryn was younger (and he obviously worked hard and grew up) he used to spit it when things didn't go his way, this was probably because he was so much better than other kids.... Best thing he did was go to where he had to realize what it was like to play against equals....he wasn't improving by dominating and got frustrated with others not being at his standard

Trust me when I say..... He was a terrific kid, who could/would talk footy and cricket all day if we let him..... Had more ambition than others and wanted to please....

Above all, he was super talented and super courageous

Of course I have..... He's played intra and 2 games at Sandy Reserves....

He moves nicely, kicks it well and is a nice size..... All I rated under simpkin are not guaranteed to play 50 games.....those under cripps not gauranteed to play 10

Having said that 2 will jump up

Minchington, Webster, Ferguson smokies to turn out possibly....

FFS. following from that. if people werent allowed opinions we should close this whole forum down.
different positions my ass. most players are "mids" and these guys are both "mids"
newnes was a rabbit in a headlight on friday. thats a fact.
im happy for people to attack my opinions but shites me when people just deliberately play the man and just try to be contrarian for its own sake.
no doubt you were a big rob eddy fan saint pav.
newnes is a kid and he will be good but he wasnt up to it on friday.

if you're wrong on any of that you'll made accountable by your fan club but at least you've had a crack....

in order for the club to introduce more new talent at seasons end some players will have to go, will the chop include any of that list....

How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?
