Michael Barlow - Deceitful scumbag…
How dare he train with us and not let us know how good he was going to be…
I say we all just yell and scream and carry on like morons, just to let him know all about it.
Maybe Silvagni too if he plays…

Re: Michael Barlow - Deceitful scumbag…
Good move by us re-drafting Gehrig instead of Barlow all those years ago.
Up there with other re-drafting strokes of genius like taking Matthew Ferguson for his fifth season of VFL footy ahead of Aaron Edwards in '06.

Re: Michael Barlow - Very good player…
One of my biggest regrets not drafting Barlow...
Another stroke of genius by the then recruiters - they had Barlow (and Rohan Bail) do most of the pre-season, and didn't pick the talent that was there - even to Rookie list him

This thread could go 20 pages with go through 06 to 08 in detail!MCG-Unit wrote:One of my biggest regrets not drafting Barlow...

Barlow did the 2009 pre-season with the Saints - and was taken as a Rookie by the Docker in 2010 (that's about pick #100) by then Beveridge may have been part-time - maybe that's when they had Peake as Recruiting Mgr.
Barlow had not played TAC Cup as a junior, but won VFL awards. They must have seen something to invite him to train..........
I know it's not easy but it's their job.

As he trained with us you would imagine that the decision would have been more coach driven.
However given where he was taken, no club including Freo were that keen on him.....

I think you will find Gehrig trained with us before the 93 National Draft and we were all good too take him at pick 8 but new coach Alves remembered he once saw a good passage of play by a Footscray player by the name of Michael Frost so in the end we got Frost at 8 and Big G went to the West Coast at pick 16

Oh dear, dear lord, one of my favourite recruiting master-strokes… Michael Frost - managed only 11 games for usmcadam05 wrote:I think you will find Gehrig trained with us before the 93 National Draft and we were all good too take him at pick 8 but new coach Alves remembered he once saw a good passage of play by a Footscray player by the name of Michael Frost so in the end we got Frost at 8 and Big G went to the West Coast at pick 16

Barlow is slow and cannot hit a target so big whoop. Much like Magner who is apparently the bees knees at the moment for being an untagged average footballer.MCG-Unit wrote:One of my biggest regrets not drafting Barlow...

If you are going to blame someone at least get your facts right. He was an assistant by then and still is. These threads are hilarious. We didnt draft him and neither did 14 other clubs. So he trained with us. Big deal plenty do. They dont play practice games so all they would have seen is a slow ordinary kick. How about the 30 who have probably trained with us in the last few years. Should we have got all of them or are we hindsight posters and only get the ones that are eventually any good.

Re: Michael Barlow - Deceitful scumbag…
I agree with you P66, it's always easy in hindsight. We could have drafted James Hird way back when because he was picked up in the 60's if I remember right.
I mean Richmond could have drafed Buddy but went for someone else.
All clubs have their drafting lowlights.
Let's remember that Gwilt was drafted very late. Face it, it is not who you draft, they all have great abilities, but it is how you develop them after you draft them.
That is the area we have not been as good as with a lot of clubs.
Just look at Geelong with the good young players they have managed to develop despite their late picks in the draft due to the handicap of winning premierships!
The new regime is taking steps to try and start competing in this facet of the game.

Except for the sanity nothing much has been lost.

Exactly. Barlow and Magner are average or below average.
