Other than to give him his 200th game, I don't think Blake warrants selection. Simpkin has shown enough last year and this year to suggest he can do a job and Blakey looks to have lost another step or two of pace this year (so far).

Of the other youngsters I'd say Ledger and Siposs are pretty much locked-in. Cripps and Stanley not so much.

This will be very close. Geary a big chance.

Except I reckon Stanley will force himself in. Based on structure requirements. Maybe Gram out as injured.

who knows? I wouldnt! Dal Has been great on the ball, but his accuracy from half back would be nice. Nah Dal should be on the ball.

For me Ray needs to show more. Ledger has taken him over. Stanley may need just to be thrown in the deep end. He has got it (height, size, hands, feet and speed). I'm thinking (more hoping) that he just doesn't realize this yet.
Blake is needed for the first half of the year. The young ins are running around with head cut off, did you not see the non manning up in the eagles game?? Experience needed and BLAKE is the most experienced defender we have. Hence why he'll play the first part of the season anyway. His leadership down back will be enough to get him in, one would think.

So the general consensus is there could be up to 5 relatively new faces from last years regular team round 1

Cripps, Ledger, Simpkin, Sipposs and Stanley

With Gram down does anyone give Milera a chance? His odds could be shortening.

I reckon this is close to the money

Personally I say bring in Cripps for Ray
Peake for Gram (maybe)

why play mcevoy in the ruck? everyone else is playing out of position so i reckon bring saad in to play ruck, mcevoy can play back pocket instead of sammy fisher, who will go down to the forward pocket instead of milney. drop him - he's past it.

Too much was left on the shoulder's of Dal Santo and Montagna. Steven and Jones gave good support. Goddard is more suited outside of the centre square. Hopefully Armo steps us as well as Ledger and Lenny will do the job. For us to improve in this area blokes like Peake and Ray need to be overtaken by more talented mids or we will lose touch with the contenders.

The other issue that needs addressing is our defensive pressure in our forward line. Since Mini dropped off form (and off the list) we've been poor in this area. Hopefully Saad is up to it. If nothing else but to lay half a dozen tackles in our forward 50. It was frustrating watching opposition teams run it out so easily last year.

It does look ordinary outside of Montagna and Dal as the outside mids, Armo, CJ, Steven and lenny can all contest but are less silky when carrying the ball, we really need one of the young guys in Ledger or Cripps to step up this year because otherwise we need Peake and Polo to get elite very quickly. jack could possibly play more of an outside role which would give him more time to dispose of it.

Round 1 team

B: Dempster - Blake (200th) - Geary
HB: Goddard - Fisher - Gilbert
C: Montagna - Hayes - Steven
HF: Siposs - Riewoldt - Schneider
F: Stanley - Koschitzke - Milne
OB: McEvoy - Dal Santo - Jones

IC: Armo - Cripps - Ledger - Ray

EM: Polo - Peake - Saad

That's how I'd go, only question mark I have is playing Stanley over at football park. Not a ground that suits big talls. Kosi could play the back up ruckman and I wouldn't be surprised if Saad comes in especially if it is windy. Simpkin might play and Winmar is a chance but that will be close to the 22 picked.

and that's the bottom line

The good news is Waters and co. are addressing our lack of quality coming through with the implementation of the youth academy. Hopefully over the next couple of years we see some real quality come through. I have high hopes for Ledger, Cripps, Ross and Newnes to become quality mids.

I'm not sure if it coincides with Waters coming to the club but I've already noticed guys gaining more confidence. Winmar comes to mind. He's got all the attributes to become elite.

There is no way we can afford to risk both Kosi and Stanley in the forward line simultaneously.
One shot players make it so easy when you spoil / obstruct their marking chances.
Opponents will bring the ball out of their defence with complete ease.

Absolutely.

I would much prefer that the likes of Ledger, Stanley, Cripps, Siposs, Steven and Armitage establish themselves than continuing to rely on Milne and Schnieder, both of whom I assess are lazy footballers and front runners.

Niether of these 2 have ever turned the tide of games when we are on the ropes and under pressure - they go missing in action.

Time to move on from the mis-placed Lockett style hero worship because these "heroes" just have never delivered when absolutely required to do so.

Time to play those I have mentioned, whilst we still have the core of good footballers we have to assist them with their development.

And for that to happen, hard decisions have to be made.

Now!!
