I think the point being lost here, is Rendell said "clubs" not "I"

Re: Rendell to be sacked by Crows?
Political correctness gone mad.
Sure Aboriginal players have added flair and excitement to the game
BUT: Given some of the social problems in outback communities it would be unrealistic to expect no fitting in/behaviour problems when these fellows are drafted to AFL clubs'
Off course there are plenty of white players with issues, but it would be folly not to acknowledge the extra challenges faced by thr Jurrahs of the world.
Most employers (all other factors being equal) would prefer employees from a background where deep seated disadvantage/disfunction did not proliferate.
The fact that we coming to Australia has buggered up Aboriginal society does not alter the problems contained within it now and the baggage attached to many Aboriginal players.
Maybe Rendell expressed himself inadequately, but I do not see a hanging offence there!

The point is you can't differentiate individuals because of background, Buddy and Johnny Patton have both got some Aboriginal background as does Sheldon and Walker but all could hide it if they chose. They are successful and it is assumed that the successful part was added by breeding out??? You don't understand the offensive part? There are plenty of indigenous people who are invisible because they fit in to a white mans society. Brendon Goddard comes from Traralgon in the Latrobe Valley which has a history of disfunction and alcoholism, maybe we should exclude his type as they are from an area that has history. All arabs are terrorists, all Irish are drunks, all Gypsies are thieves... it is racist grouping even if disfunction is prevalent. He was dumb to voice it.

Sounds like Matty has been crucified for offering his opinion about the opinions of others.
I don't think there is anything wrong with that.
What is the message from this?
Don't express your opinions even in private to the AFL?

Re: Rendell to be sacked by Crows?
What is going on?
He was a recruiting manager with his beliefs and a job to hire the best possible talent available. He had supposedly ugly, racist and anti-good guy AFL beliefs.
What are those stated beliefs?:
There is more risk recruiting aboriginal players with two black parents as compared to 1 black parent and 1 white parent.
He should be sacked for stupidity for stating facts rather than incorrectness. If I was a recruiting manager, I reckon I would agree with him. I mean seriously; Derrrr.
Sadly there are 15 other recruiting managers who probably won't for fear of a whack from the AFL.
Sadly we punish truth when we should be rewarding and encouraging assimilation. It's more a matter of solving problems rather than ignoring them.
We can ignore Liam Jurrah's actions. No that's fine, I'll get pissed and whack my cousin over the head with a thingamajig 'cause it's our custom. Let's forgive him and let him train again for the Dee's. Hurrah. What next?

as for liam - he has been charged and will face the nt court system. not really sure why u also want to add an extra punishment on top or why his employer should ad an extra punishment on top? im happy to let the nt court do its job.
still not sure how u reckon it is a fact? one "white parent" makes a kid "better? that effing offensive and a pile of rubbish.
the issue for me is if he was just saying "oh some clubs feel that way - i dont but thats what others are saying and we need to fix it" if thats what matt was saying then he got shafted over unfairly bigtime.

The fact is that if you take an individuals race as a basis for discriminating against employing him rather than his individual merit as a player or employee you are racist. Sorry that's a fact. I have travelled and know people from heaps of backgrounds and deciding that a stereo type view of whole races -which in the indigenous community there happen to be heaps of different races- is just dumb. I have met enough people to know that you should see a person as an individual not a type.
I'm glad Nicky Winmar wasn't put in the too hard basket. Raph and Zavier Clarke are really stable guys with great personal skills and grew up in Darwin which is more urban than remote. Tiwi islanders and central desert people often have a harder time adjusting to city life than guys from Perth and Adelaide. Why should the guy from urban Melbourne be classified as too hard because he happens to look a bit similar to a guy from central Australia who doesn't speak english and has never played TAC cup?
It was a dumb thing to say and likely to be seen as out of date by an organisation that has tried to develop strong anti racism laws.

Re: Rendell to be sacked by Crows?
Rendell has a point. Of course he does. We should, as a football community, actually listen to it, and work out what else needs to be done to help Indigenous players integrate into the game.
Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

Re: Rendell to be sacked by Crows?
If he was saying we need to help overcome some issues with in dysfunctional communities so that regardless of background the opportunities are there for all players to succeed fine, but he said he wouldn't employ people with out one white parent at least. If it was said about people from immigrant backgrounds it would be offensive to most but somehow Aussies think it ok for Aboriginals. If the AFL supplied some welfare officers it may have less of these issues. If they ditch Rendell and there is still the underlying problem then the AFL has a problem.evertonfc wrote:Rendell has a point. Of course he does. Rendell is probably correct regarding issues of Indigenous players and the ability to transform them into good players.gringo wrote:If he was saying we need to help overcome some issues with in dysfunctional communities so that regardless of background the opportunities are there for all players to succeed fine, but he said he wouldn't employ people with out one white parent at least. On the flipside though there is a smaller sample space to make judgements regarding the success and only a few real stars of the competition over the past 15 years that most rattle off.
Regarding Jurrah. The man has been charged with a serious, violent crime yet the AFL allow him back? Why? It is anti-racism by suggesting that it is what goes on in remote communities. Such an act is wrong regardless of the circumstances and the geography. It is similar to the blatant oppression of Muslim women in Western countries. Such abuse is illegal in said countries however often a blind eye is turned due to cultural differences. From this acceptance occurs and our society changes because of it.
Re: Rendell to be sacked by Crows?
my only problem is that alot of respected journalists and past players have lept to the defence of randell. not to support what he allegedly said, but because they think he was misquoted.
i believe he was actually saying his fear is they are not doing enough to stop the industry from going in a direction where that will happen
it just has a feeling of someone being setup. a week or two after the jarrah stuff then around the time of the "its our game" commercial.

Re: Rendell to be sacked by Crows?
"allow" him back? what does that mean? are you suggesting that if you're accused of a crime then your employer should immediately cut all ties with you? or is it when you're convicted that they should fire you and ensure that you can never get a job ever again? The Redeemer wrote:Regarding Jurrah. either way, it's not exactly going to help you rehabilitate from maybe doing a bad thing.

Re: Rendell to be sacked by Crows?
for starters it would be entirely illegal. jurrah would be entitled to sue if his contract was breached.bergholt wrote:"allow" him back? what does that mean? are you suggesting that if you're accused of a crime then your employer should immediately cut all ties with you? or is it when you're convicted that they should fire you and ensure that you can never get a job ever again? The Redeemer wrote:Regarding Jurrah. it is not like he is getting off - he will face the nt court system. at this stage he is presumed innocent. this is the system we live in. would be totally unfair if his employer also got involved now. i think nt court is enough. there is a chance he could be jailed. not sure what that mean for his contract with the dees?

Re: Rendell to be sacked by Crows?
Spot on he is!
It is a lot about risk.
Maybe Bundy was fired as the AFL and Adelaide were worried about losing big sponsorship dollars quickly?
Given the current unstable economy, any excuse will do. In better economic times there tends to be more tolerance to off field issues.
As for recruiting Aboriginals, many years ago at a former employer we wanted to
Employ an Aboriginal specifically (was the tourist industry as a bus driver). We thought an Aboriginal would give a much more real and authentic take on the environment (central Australia) than any white person could. We had employed a bloke who interviewed really well, super friendly and keen. But unfortunately he just went walkabout and never turned up for work. It's bloody had as a white person to get inside their heads. Sure, in the AFL spectrum there is weight of numbers but it's still a different world. Great shame to be losing so much raw talent, but as has been mentioned on EMT, raw talent alone is simply not enough.

Matt Rendell = "scapegoat" of the highest order. Made Adelaide, the AFL and probably Misfud look very ordinary tonight. Caro made herself look so ordinary it wasn't funny. Here's a guy spilling his guts on TV and she's not even listening to his answers and then asks one hell of a stupid question.
The most compelling TV I've seen in a long, long time. Anyone in WA you have to watch Footy Classified tonight!

Demetrio makes me wank to puke, seriously. Not surprised Rendell isn't too concenrned about not having a job in this industry anymore.

Re: Rendell to be sacked by Crows?
I was riveted to the tv.....I could feel the raw passion, emotion, honesty, coming from Bundy I have never seen anyone from this fake, propaganda spread, overhyped bulls*** industry....
Rendell was in obvious pain about the way he has been portrayed, by the people running the game he is an ornament to and has served for 35 years....
Funny thing is, he was trying to find SOLUTIONS to the issues aboriginals have adjusting to city/AFL life which must be tough, and like a smack in the face......he'll, kids in the TAC cup have enough issues adjusting to ridiculous disciplines demanded of 18-20yo boys, especially those with troubled backgrounds.
His line of do something now. Or else recruiters will only recruit boys with one white parent (due to the attrition rate being higher than white kids) was poorly worded and was a clear mistake
But, the point he was making wasn't racist.....it was from a point of view that, a recruiter faced with choices, looks for a ten year player, if he thinks there will be a problem with coping with transition the recruiter will overlook.....so let's improve their transition
Where is Jason Mifsud in all of this, why has he not faced the media to clear up and put the comments into context....and explain why it took 2 months to bring up the comments....if they were so concerning to him....
They were concerning to demetriou....and that was the issue, trying to protect his precious brand, he was over sensitive to comments someone had the balls to bring up and think of solutions....
The line was poor, but to make a villain of Bundy is disgusting....the man looked in pain to even be thought of as a racist, I felt for his wellbeing

Re: Rendell to be sacked by Crows?
Doesn't Misfud work for the AFL? If so, I dare say we won't be hearing anything from him any time soon, or that if we do, it will be scripted by the AFL. Maybe he ought to fall on his sword as well, if what Rendell said tonight was true and he (Misfud) has any integrity and the AFL won't let him tell his side of the story.BigMart wrote:

Re: Rendell to be sacked by Crows?
He's huge on the issue of race in sport.. IMO, plays the racism card and takes the victim position too often.. Very regular comments on twitter always reverting to race..BigMart wrote:Where is Jason Mifsud in all of this
Hell, he tried to turn the Jeremy Lin craze into a race debate insinuating that he was popular solely because he was Asian, and insinuated that if you were a new supporter of his and thought Lin was great, it was motivated by racist undertones.. Just rubbish.
Re: Rendell to be sacked by Crows?
Only guessing here, but I'd say it took two months, because the issue had become relevant suddenly given recent circumstances BM
Edit. Interesting that he rates Terry so highly
