Not many people would of backed Dawson to be our full back when we picked him up in the rookie draft. Archer is worth a shot, in the VFL anyway, because we have very shakey options currently playing. With very little back up, we should at least run it up the flag pole. You never know your luck.

I will be surprised if WILKES makes it as a key defender - he doesn't seem to want to play with maintaining contact and is much more suited to playing as a forward. Although perhaps Max may be able to improve this approach - I believe he would be a more productive forward than Kosi will be this year.

Hence for me ARCHER would make the perfect big key defender we need. However the SAINTS coaching staff have a different plan for Daniel as they were playing him forward before he was injured - I hope they consider the alternative.
I am going to assume this is not a troll.
Get one thing straight, Archer is not AFL standard. At the end of this season he will not be on our list. To suggest that he should be developed as our full back is laughable to say the least.
Careful what you say around here. The people who cant handle a bit of heat will crack it.

Whether or not Archer makes it at AFL level I agree that he needs to be developed as a FB at VFL level. We are in desperate need of a bigger bodied FB.

Luckily we have plenty of forward and ruck options. Maybe we should develop him in a position that suits how he plays. Just an idea.

Unless you are an AFL coach we can dismiss your dismissal of the idea and ponder it's feasibility.

Sorry I was just going by where the AFL coaches are playing him. Funny about that.

I would be suprised if he is off the list next year - He's 20 yrs old - a year yonger than Stanley - From what I've seen live at Sandy he has pretyy good hand and foot skills and has some pretty good movement in tight spots for a big guy - my only concern would be his pace - someone here has said he is actually pretty quick over 20 metres for a big guy - and I would like to believe that - I think someone had said he has lost a few KG as well - so would like to believe that - Not sure why he can't be developed as a KPP whether it be forward or back..
Will be nice to get Gwilt back in the backline might help the balance

Plugged the coaches dont always get it right - in any event it is just suggestion because it is obvious our backline lacks size. We have played 2 real games and on both occasions the larger forwards killed us - does that ring your warning bells.
Either they bite the bullet and move Kosi back or develop someone like Archer. I have major reservations on Wilkes playing as a defender. I have seen Daniel played as a ruckman and he battles well but I doubt he could be used in that role at AFL level.

Some people have completely written Daniel off but I am one that think he offers plenty.

Why is is such a funny suggestion Clarky?

How do you know it his worst position Plugger?
Because he is slow and would get destroyed. Their is a reason why supporters arent in Football clubs because they dont understand.
There's also a reason why scarcasm is considered the lowest form of wit. Actually I'm not sure you even qualify for that.

Of course the coaches dont always get it right but how would you know it hasnt been discussed or even tried at training. He may just not be able to play in that position due to lack of pace. Pretty sure most things discussed on here ar discussed earlier by coaches. Lets face they know 99% more about AFL footy than probably 99% of posters on here or any other fan site.

Archer played in defense at sandy in the back half of last year when Walsh went fwd....he played 3 games at chb......none deep as simpkin was playing there...

Coaches can switch kpp with results

Happened with Wilkes midway through last year with premiership results

Happened with Dawson mid 2008, and he kicked 8 goals which put him back on the afl radar

Happened with Johnson who played well in 2009 down back, struggled in 2010 and was moved fwd in 2011 with results

Happened with Sam fisher who was drafted as a fwd, played forward for Casey and came in as a stop gap due to injuries and never looked back

Happened with Beau Dowler at noble park last year and won them the premiership....moving from CHF to CHB

Happened with Scott Lucas, David Nietz, Chris Grant, Chris Taarant, Heath Grundy...would you like more examples

It is not a notion to be dismissed

He is a big strong man, is courageous and surprisingly quick......he lacks a bit of polish as a forward.

And Tugger had us believing he watched Sandy's games and yet he never saw Archer in the back line..
Lucky the AFL coaches know what's going on then.

Anyone bagging Archer actually been to training lately?(pre-broken jaw). As a fwd he may be deemed slow as he has the turning circle of a Semi but...in a straight line he is quick off the mark and goes well in sprint testing. Probably best suited to a full back role & strong in the contest. Something lacking in oor current defensive unit. Worth developing IMO

He was one of the players in last years NAB that really looked good, he crashed packs like a train and contested ball he had no right to. If guys that do that aren't up to standard these days footy is getting boring.

He looked like a strong competitor and was that big crash through body we have lacked for a while. His marks didn't all stick but he looked like a go to man in the Dawes and Cloke style. He brought the ball to ground and scared the defenders around him. Well worth persisting with to me as we need some more pack crashing talls.

And big enough to play on the gorilla forwards if he can adapt. There's a reason we kept this bloke and delisted guys such as Johnson and Cahill. Arch shows a bit of intensity and mongrel.

To add further to our discussion - Paul Roos seems to think that teams need a tall marking key defender to be competitive as the ball is being bombed in long to big forwards more reguluarly. There is no one big enough to play that role in our current set up?
