Hmmm...
Jay Schultz 193cm, 95kg.
Justin Westhoff 199cm, 93kg.
John Butcher 197 cm, 90kg (but it's his first season)
vs.
Beau Wilkes 194cm, 100kg.
The Blake 189 cm, 90kg.
It's bulk versus experience, but I'd say Beau is the man.

We'll have to put some serious thought into Butcher..
Also depends on which Westoff turns up... Can be dynamic or diabolical... Anyones guess?!!
Butcher will be the breakout forward this year... 50+ goals easily I'm predicting...
Port seems an easy rnd.1 match-up on paper, but it'll be a very dangerous match... Cannot let matches like this slip early in the season..
With respect to the OP, not too sure, but for mine it's between Simpkin and Wilkes, and the next 2 NAB matches will decide it... On the little seen this year, I have Simpkin marginally ahead, but I'm not going on much... The position is up for grabs for he who wants it most...

Simpkin for me. Looked far better than Wilkes in NAB rnd 1. Gilbo will be needed to be given some freedom and the Blake will be only rotated through the Backline.

if Port go a tall foward line - we will probably have simpkin wilkes gilbo as the back 3. the blake might sneak in on the bench.Sobraz wrote:We'll have to put some serious thought into Butcher..

Question: If Simpkin plays on Schulz and Wilkes plays on Butcher, which one is the fullback? If pressed, I'd say Wilkes, but it's really much the same job.
Yeah nah pleasing positive

Re: Quick Poll - Who will be the Fullback for Round 1
Interesting topic. I think this will be discussed heavily throughout the season. Unless we discover someone to quickly settle into the position within the first few rounds I think the backline is going to struggle. If Blake is the best option we've got then we are in a lot of trouble.

Why have people dismissed Wilkes already?
He may be good, he may not work out...but to base his capabilities on a praccy game is a big call.

You don't play a position these days, you play on an opponent.
Wilkes and Simpkin will get the two main forwards.

I like the look of Simpkin.
I say throw him in the deep end.

Re: Quick Poll - Who will be the Fullback for Round 1
Simpkin and Wilkes will both start the season in the team IMO. Simpkin the permanent back Wilkes the swingman. Gwilt will push one out when he returns. Blake will struggle to get a game IMO.

Simpkin to Butcher, Wilkes to Schultz and Sammy Fisher to pay Westhoff zero respect.

Blake will play, just a matter of which position.

Re: Quick Poll - Who will be the Fullback for Round 1
seems to be a feeling that all 4 will be in the backline.
add sammy fisher and then i guess it comes down to gram v cripps? plus a bench spot.
also the possibility teams will try and go tall against us when possible.

Re: Quick Poll - Who will be the Fullback for Round 1
I'd be surprised if he didn't play at least the first few games but unless there is somebody that can step up and push him out then he is either having a blinder of year which might also mean the team is going ok or worst case scenario he is having a crap year but there aren't any better options to replace him so he keeps getting a game. In any case I think if somebody doesn't step up to the full back position this year other than Blake then we have got a big problem down back beyond 2012.ace wrote:Cairnsman wrote:Interesting topic. Re: Quick Poll - Who will be the Fullback for Round 1
I believe WILKES is a more natural instinctive forward than he is a backman - but I am sure they will try him at Full Back. For me we would be far better off with SIMPKIN at Full Back he is a more natural defender with a bit of mongrel which I like. In any event SIMPKIN should play if front of BLAKE if we are to improve our back line.
I would like to see WILKES up forward but that wont happen at least in the short term. I would let WILKES fight it out with one of KOSI or STANLEY for the 3rd forward tall posi - put soem pressure on them to perform.
