governments love throwing money at sport because voters love sport. pretty sure every major footy project ends up with state money paying for 50+% of it.

We, the Tax Payer, are not paying for renovations to the "Westpac Centre", ie the old Olympic Pool building. We are paying for the demolition of the old Olympic Park athletics venue and more recently Melbourne Storm home ground, in order for a new training oval to be build for Collingwood. This all came about after Eddie conveniently got himself on the board of Athletics Australia, who decided to move athletics from their traditional home to Albert Park, the old Lakeside Oval/Bob Jane Stadium.

i seriously dont understand why govt should be contributing.
the afl is a very very commercial enterprise and in fact has more money than god (look at the money spent on the latest expansion teams + fast rising player wages). make no mistake about this. dont be swayed by the clubs crying poor - the tv rights are massive and the gate + merchandising etc revenues for the afl as a whole are very very healthy,

governments should not give a single cent to afl clubs. ever. full stop. the so called "community involvement" that clubs use to justify government funds are very very dubious.

Of course they should give money. They do to every sport and our sport probably provides more revenue to governements than all the others combined.

I can think of at least 100 other worse things to subsidise but you will not get any argument out of me, most govt subsidies and grants are dubious.

Unfortunately the Pies are geographically better off with shared amenities for the other sports that use the area. Seaford isn't exactly where the pollies throw the money for new projects. You see the precinct from your train every morning, Seaford is only seen when your too pissed to find Portsea in the Range Rover.
