Scott - Give us the Points- AFL to take submissions

Update - Wangaratta match Ess v St K. Both clubs will now be given opportunity to present their views on awarding of match points.
http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/ ... fault.aspx
ST KILDA coach Scott Watters appears on a collision course with the AFL after clasiming the Saints deserved all four points from Saturday night's cancelled NAB Cup game against Essendon.
Watters claimed the Bombers no-show meant they forfeited the match.
The game was cancelled after two flights carrying Essendon's players and coaches were unable to land in Wangaratta due to heavy rain and conditions in the area, leading the AFL to announce the four points would be shared.
"As the club was unable to reach the venue, the match will be declared a draw with two points awarded to each team under NAB Cup rules," an AFL statement read.
Watters contradicted the AFL statement later on Saturday night.
"My understanding is the AFL will make a decision on Monday so we'll wait and see what comes out of that," Watters said.
"We came here wanting the four points and we'll see what happens.
"The last time I was at a forfeit was in under-12s and the side that didn't turn up didn’t get the points. The AFL will make the decision and we'll stand by that." >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

St Kilda have not given up on gaining maximum points from tonight’s cancelled AFL pre-season clash with Essendon in Wangaratta, despite the league saying points will be shared.
The Bombers’ decision to fly to the match, rather than travel by bus a day earlier as the Saints did, backfired badly, with torrential rain making it impossible for Essendon’s two chartered planes to land.

Gotta love the AFL.
Maybe once they read THEIR rule book theyll hand over the 4 points to us.
Sorry i am in dreamland.
They will have a bullshyte enquiry and then make up some BS to keep it as a draw.
We all know the drill.......

ESSENDON will not be sanctioned by the AFL for the drama that caused tonight's NAB Cup game against St Kilda at Wangaratta to be cancelled.
But there was anger from local fans and supporters who made the trip from Melbourne, as well as shock on St Kilda's part that the game was declared a draw with two points each.
The sold-out match was abandoned after the two planes the Essendon players were flying up on were unable to land due to inclement weather.
It left the AFL with no choice but to call the game off, hours before the start.
St Kilda, who had travelled to Wangaratta by bus on Friday, staged an intra-club match for fans.
Wangaratta Magpies president Paul Challman said he could not understand why the Bombers had not opted to drive.
"I just can't understand why they had to fly - maybe they have got too much money or something," Challman said.
"They will lose a lot of fans out of this. Their credibility will suffer." >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The calls led to the AFL appearing to change their mind on splitting the points, releasing a statement to say they may toss a coin to find the winner.
"If a Pre-Season Competition Match is unable to commence for reasons beyond the control of the Club, the General Manager - Football Operations shall endeavour to reschedule the Match so that a result can be obtained," The statement said.
"If the Match cannot be rescheduled, the winner will be decided by the toss of a coin."
Further down, the statement says each club will be given an opportunity to state their case.
"Each club will be given the opportunity to provide its view to the AFL on whether the match was unable to commence for reasons beyond Essendon’s control. A final determination will then be made by the AFL."
However, an earlier statement form the AFL read: "As the club was unable to reach the venue, the match will be declared a draw with two points awarded to each team under NAB Cup rules." >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Apparently NAB Cup rules state that should a match not go ahead it will be decided by a toss of the coin.
... so Essendon could win for not turning up.

Can we have a coin toss also to decide if Anderson keeps his job after a monumental bad call re allowing the Bumbers to fly at 2pm today?!!!

Re: Scott - Give us the Points- AFL to take submissions
You'd think these sections of the AFL's "Laws Of Australian Football" will be examined over the next 48 hours.
Sorry it's a long quote, but it's all relevant...
"10.7.1 Forfeiture Of A Match.
For the purposes of the law, a team forfeits a match if:
(a) it is unable or it fails, refuses or neglects to commence or recommence play:
(i) at the scheduled starting time;
(ii) within such other time period determined or specified by the Controlling Body,
a field Umpire, or these Laws;
(b) the field Umpire determines, in accordance with these Laws, that a team has forfeited the Match; or
(c) an event occurs under the Laws which results in a Team forfeiting a Match.
10.7.2 Consequences of a forfeiture.
Where a team forfeits a Match the following shall apply:
(a) the points for the Match shall be awarded to the Team who did not forfeit the Match."
And -
"10.6.2 Incomplete Match
If a Match is unable to commence or continue within the time scheduled for the Match for
reasons beyond the control of either Team (including circumstances where it is unsafe for the
Match to proceed) the following shall apply:
(a) Match Not Commenced
The result of a Match which is unable to commence for reasons beyond the control of the Team
shall be determined by the Controlling Body."
This last Law gives the Controlling Body, in this case the AFL, the right to determine the outcome of a
match which did not start, IF it accepts that a team is unable to start the game for a reason beyond the team's
control. That is, the AFL has to consider that the Bombers (epic) failure to arrive was beyond its control.
That makes this match an "incomplete" match. And then, the AFL gets to decide the outcome...amd maybe
this is where the coin toss idea has sprouted.

Re: Scott - Give us the Points- AFL to take submissions
Well Essendon were in complete control of getting to the match.
It's not like the game was in Perth where you wouldn't be expected to drive across for a match. Everyone knows the risks of flying that you can be delayed or cancelled. Leaving a few hours before the bounce is negligent and apathetic.

That all holds true for the season proper, but I believe that the NAB Cup has separate provisions for such instances, which call for a coin toss."10.7.1 Forfeiture Of A Match.

Re: Scott - Give us the Points- AFL to take submissions
Absolutely disgraceful decision to split the points.
We should get all four points plus the largest percentage boost of any team in the round.
If one team doesn't show up the the ground, then that team forfiets all four points.
Maybe we should not show up to our games versus west coast in perth, vs collingwood, vs hawthorn, and just take the two points.
Utterly ludicrous!!!!

I know, and such a stance is typical of the AFL. They can't even abide by their own rules. They make it up as they go along.

This may explain why the AFL would consider it out of Essendons control in that they were unable to reach the venue;
*The AFL, who had endorsed Essendon’s travel plans*
Meaning they would have to accept some of the blame.

Because it was all AFL endorsed that means we are screwed.
We should get some prize money from the nab cup if the points are split.
It's all about the money. Show us the money Demetriou. It's your team's incompetence that is likely to cost us a higher place on the nab cup ladder and hence prize money.

The Laws of the Game are irrelevant in this case. As we found out a few years ago in Tasmania, "process" overrides the laws. And what is that "process"? Screwing the Saints.
