Remembering 1987

Post: # 1194333Post mcadam05 »

Here's Vol 1 of the St Kilda news, a short lived video magazine the Club brought out

Includes what I think is the only footage of Winmar's great mark vs Essendon and lots of behind the scenes stuff

ENJOY!

Barker, Winmar, Moorabbin days, the Coodabeens, and er, a very-fresh-faced Eddie McGuire

Magic year.

I started keeping a diary that year and still have it filled with Saints results, Pluggers goal tally, Brownlow, etc.

Bittersweet year too - my best mate died in a fight aged 26, in July that year.

If only Nicky's mark could be digitally cleaned up - it is one of the best in history...

Fantastic!

If only Winmar's feats were better recorded.
That mark I saw from the other side of the ground -- it was so great you almost fainted on the spot.
What it would look like in today's crisp, clean slow-mo ...

Dazzling Darrell ran a pretty amazing line in bad casual jumpers too.

That mark of Winmar against the Bombers at Moorabbin in 1987 is still the most amazing mark I have ever seen live at the football. The lack of footage is s tradgedy. Not many cameras at our games back in the 80's unfortunately.

This.

That mark was taken right in front of us - it was the most incredible mark I've ever seen.

The timing of Nicky's leap and the hang time before he took the grab, was a joy to behold - if a mark was taken like that today, they'd be calling it the greatest mark of all time no doubt.

I still regard Nicky Winmar as one of the greatest athletes to ever pull on a Saints guernsey.

happened right in front of me, was with a mate who was a Collingwood supporter(used to go to Moorabbin as a neutral). He had a bad pie and turned around to chuck just as the mark was taken and missed it!

I also saw that amazing mark

My brother had his head down - depressed at the time - and missed it

Probably only bettered by Goddard's grand final effort of 2010 in my 45 years of following the Saints

The roar from the stand was off the decibel scale

I also regard Winmar as one of the greatest to ever play the game - not just one of the greatest indigeneous players!

As a kid following the Saints there wasn't much to cheer about then by about 87 things started to look a little sunnier. Barker was about the only thing to hang your hat on until Nicky -he was a shining light. I always wore the number 7 on my jumper because of him and that era got me passionate about footy not just something to do. Oh and big Plugger helped.

Nicky was typical of most of our idols
Brilliant but damaged
I think that is what people mean when they refer to "St kilda culture"

Riewoldt and Goddard to live up to their reputations ,Clarke and Ray to defy theirs in 2012!

McAdam05 you are a LEGEND !

Just loved watching the video.
Brought back sooooo many fantastic memories.

I was there for the Winmar mark.
I've always maintained it was the greatest mark I have seen, but as the years go by it all gets a bit blurry and I'm not so sure now.
The footage doesn't do it justice, but shows just enough to make you realise "Wow - how did he mark that!".
1987 was when Nicky was about as good as he got - some of those highlights were just brilliant.

Thanks again for the footage.
Old buggers like me that still mentally occupy the animal enclosure really appreciate these memories.

Keep up your fantastic work.
It is very very much appreciated.
