Why DazzlingDaryl? Note that his name was spelt many ways in the 1960s!
Late August at Moorabbin 1966: the equation was simple - Saints were trailing Hawthorn and would miss the finals altogether if they lost. Richmond, well ahead would finish 4th; Saints 5th.
Jeans was faced with a dilemma: play the Doc who was 19th man and injured OR simply lose the game, miss the finals and face the end of an era with an ageing team.
He gambled and sent Baldock straight on to the ball. The stands and outer errupted thunderously as the Doc ran onto the field and scored a quick goal. He dominated the quarter and the Saints prevailed by a narrow 10 pts. The Herald gave Baldock 3 votes for 25 mins of play!
Of course, the Saints went on to win the most famous premiership of all by that single point but they would never have got there had they lost in round 18.
I was there both for round 18 and all 3 finals in 1966!
The B&W utube footage does not really do Baldock justice. He was sensational and the biggest name in the game during 1963 - 1968.

Re: Dazzling Darrell
I wasn't born then,
It's always great to hear about a very important and special time in our history,
May we all experience what must be an amazing feeling of a premiership one day,
welcome

Re: Dazzling Darrell
A true champion of St Kilda, football, racing, Tasmanian politics and the community in general and his name is Darrel John Baldock.
Old enough to repaint, but young enough to sell

Re: Dazzling Darrell
Not only known as Dazzling Darrell
but
Mr Magic!
I too was at that rnd 18 game at Moorabbin
The cheer that went up around the ground when Doc ran onto the ground was unbelievable.
His ability to weave his way through traffic has never been matched (IMO), expecially in heavy/wet conditions.
He was simply the best player I've seen.
