Big weight gainers over pre-season
There are some impressive changes to listed weights since last season:
Cripps: up 8 to 81kg (now just lighter than Geary and Jones, at the same height)
Ledger: up 6 to 76kg (now the same size as Montagna)
Crocker: up 5 to 76kg (also about the same size as Montagna)
Siposs: up 4 to 87kg (only 3kg lighter than Blake, who's the same height)
McEvoy: up 3 to 101kg (now the biggest bloke on the list)
Stanley: up 3 to 98kg (and looked more solid last night)
Steven: up 3 to 82kg (very solid unit now for his height)
Ferguson: up 2 to 87kg (still very light for 194cm - a concern?)
Winmar: up 2 to 83kg (10kg lighter than BJ, though the same height)
Great to see the last couple of crops of draftees really putting on (hopefully) some muscle.
In the old hands, strangely:
Clarke: down 3 to 82kg
Montagna: down 2 to 76kg
Polo: down 3 to 83kg
Did they take a s*** just before the weigh-in?

I reckon they nearly make some of those figures up but I do know the latest fitness guy wants mids lean where as the Bombers have gone the other way. I do remember one year that Justin Peckett actually lost 2cm in height.
Re: Big weight gainers over pre-season
Not even looking at the figures there are some noticable changes. Roo and Kosi are looking leaner and Stanley and McEvoy bigger. From pictures I've seen Wilkes looks like he's dropped a few Kg's since he arrived at the club. Siposs lookes bigger in the upper body.
As far as our mids go Goddard, Gram and Hayes are looking leaner. Cripps and Ledger bigger.

Awesome!
Funny thing with Goddard is his arms look slender. Must be a lack of tan.
Essendon are following Geelongs lead yeah?

Well they are trying but I reckon geelong have naturally bigger mids. Not sure you wont to get to muscle bound in todays footy. I know Lenny is the lightest he has been since his first year.

Re: Big weight gainers over pre-season
How do players get lighter?
Are we talking getting leaner? Ie less fat?
Or do they stop doing weights? Or just stop increasing the weights.

I actually wouldnt have a clue but I am guessing it to do with weights. They certainly wouldnt stop using them though. Diet may also be part of it. It certainly is when putting on weight.

Think I agree with all that, having gone last night.Old Mate wrote:Not even looking at the figures there are some noticable changes. Roo and Kosi are looking leaner and Stanley and McEvoy bigger. The likes of Siposs, Ledger, Stanley and Cripps all look much better suited (physically) to playing AFL senior footy now, which is really good. Milera also wasn't as skinny as I thought he might have been, from hearing all the previous reports. Saad also looks ready to go, physically.
YOU GET WHAT YOU SETTLE FOR.
Re: Big weight gainers over pre-season
In general I'd say weights plus protein loading equates to gaining muscle mass, whilst running leads to leanness. Obviously AFL players need a mix of both - player specific schedules would be tailored by the Saints fitness people.plugger66 wrote:Spinner wrote:How do players get lighter?

Also the running depends on what sort of distances. Long distance running would lead to weight loss, but I would expect that AFL guys would be doing medium distances with interval sprints.
(disclaimer: I am by no means an exercise physiologist so happy to stand corrected!)

Re: Big weight gainers over pre-season
Polo looks quicker this year from his weight loss, Cripps looks ready to go as does Rhys. Simpkin is really wide across the shoulders but skinny elsewhere (except that enormous head).
Shenton looks a nice size too, sort of goddard build. Like the way he goes about it too, he didn't get a major impact but has that Hammill like ability to chase and position. Walsh on the other hand looks like he doesn't know whats going on. He held a Geelong player around the waist in a tackle leaving his arms free to handball under no pressure then ran around looking lost.

Archer is one who over the last two years has changed body shape - was always BIG and big Behind, but is more even/ in his shape- . it should make him quicker.

Re: Big weight gainers over pre-season
It's good to see the pre-planning/preparation that has gone in for this year.
Having the younger guys in particular, better equipped to handle the physicality at AFL level, will do wonders for their confidence.

Thought so. As opposed to higher weight lower reps for muscle gain.
Thanks!

Magda looks to have bulked up considerably.

Re: Big weight gainers over pre-season
Jackson Ferg's first pre-season he was told to eat anything and everything to put on weight. This pre-season he has been told to be strict with his diet. Don't know if that is to do with him as an individual or a change of regime has changed the training / dietary protocols for the club as a whole.

i tried various kinds of shakes over the summer - predominantly malted barley and hops based. I found they were very good for putting on weight.
