Round 1 Side
Yes another one of these.
What last night showed me was that there are a lot of candidates for R1!
- Ross played both games and in the middle
- Same with Ledger
- Cripps played both with stints on wing and in defense
- Saad was strong in the contest; especially overhead
- Milera is smooth!
I guess these are my definates:
Ray Wilkes Gram
Cripps Fisher Gilbert
Montagna Hayes Goddard
Schneider Riewoldt Saad
Stanley Koschitzke Milne
McEvoy Dal Santo Steven
Armitage Ledger Dempster
Siposs
The bolded are definites. Seems like we will have excess depth if we play a few kids. While the team is not strong, it has potential to improve.
Polo
Peake
Blake
Jones
Clarke
Geary
Of the guys missing with experience.
Winmar
Simpkin
Ross
Of the younger guys that might be a chance through the year.
Milera

Re: Round 1 Side
Despite his kicking, I would have CJ in there for sure, especially after seeing how he went about it last night, where he was pretty much at his best, which is very good (despite his kicking). Having him as a tagging option, or an option for his ball winning, in the middle, frees up someone like Goddard, or Dal, to go to half back and use their disposal as a weapon. His ability to get the hard ball and then run on hard to provide a link is extremely good.
If Ledger keeps on playing like that till round one, he will be a lock for a spot. With Lenny back and Jack looking good again, Armo will need to lift his game if he's going to play round one, IMHO. I think it's midfield, or nowhere, for him, as there are likely to be better options up forward than him (Steven, Ledger, Saad, maybe Cripps), so he has to be demanding a midfield spot (not easy, considering we also have Hayes, Steven, Dal, Monty, CJ, BJ) to get a game, I reckon.
Wilkes v Simpkin could be a toss of the coin, at this point. Simpkin is probably better for playing on those that aren't "gorillas", while Wilkes will probably be better suited when they are. Really think we may regret letting Zac go, in spite of his weaknesses.

I reckon that is because he is actually better than Wilkes however he may not have the body to play FB. Lets face it Wilkes was playing in a lower competition than the VFL for the last 2 years and Simpkin has finshed top 4 in the B&F over that period. Not sure Wilkes has done that. Could easily be proved wrong though.

Agree with all of this. Simpkin looks ready and composed but his size vs a gorilla is a concern. Early days though...

i am really hoping our kids demand selection and put some real pressure on the older players. if we can get 2 or 3 kids to be game changers then we'll give the flag a real shake.

Their really are'nt too many "gorillas" going around these days though. Indangered species indeed.
At this stage i would select Simpkin, does show some poise under pressure which is paramount in the last line of defence.

Thanks K. I thought Cripps or Peake would make good subs in that side. Unless they prefer to play Cripps as running back instead of Ray...SainterK wrote:It looks good MCG, who do you think would be suited to the sub role?MCG-Unit wrote:B: Cripps, Wilkes, Dempster

Re: Round 1 Side
I dont want to be a prick. But Wilkes is by no means a certainy. Good honest Aussie battler and great country footballer. But probbaly not AFL. Was drafted as a back up utility.
Simpkin will get first crack at full back - no question in my mind.
The big issues for me are who plays on the real gorillas and resting rucks - simpkin not quite tall enough so i guess gilbo will have to?.... and IF big mac goes down we really are faaaaarked...
ON a positive note im feeling very good about ledger/cripps/siposs. 2010 super draft!

Armo is the most notable omission from most peoples teams.
i guess ray/cj/armo/polo all compete for 2 midfield spots and lendog will be rotated this year in and out.

Re: Round 1 Side
Having watched Armo closely last week he wont play round 1 on that form! His biggest issue is his lack of pace and or acceleration - he is the complete one paced player eg Stevie Powell and will continue to struggle with the pace of the game. I hate to say it but I think Ross LYON was completely right with Armo, he doesn't have the tools to play in the modern games midfield.
SAINTS another day older another day closer to the Holy Grail!
