Saints and Professionalism

Post: # 1190980Post Con Gorozidis »

This is a big call. But I think somehow we have turned the corner (around 6 months ago) and we are now one of the most professional clubs on and off field in the afl. Lets see if we can keep it going for the next 6 years.

anyone thinking similar?

this pre season is on fire!

No off field dramas (touch wood, hope the boys didn't drink too much last night)

97% of all players fit!

We can win the flag in 2012. People going on about Carlton FFS.... we finished 2 games behind them in 2011 and we lost how many close ones, with all that drama and moving to seaford?? We are going to be there again no doubt.

Agreed re: professionalism.
As Grant Thomas always liked to say - when a club gets that winning feeling and keeps it for a sustained period the players and supporters go out each week expecting to win - and usually will.
If we can just have bit of luck with guys like Ledger, Cripps and Siposs this year injury wise, and Saad and Milera (Mileara? I have heard it pronounced this way too) are half as good as what certain experts predict, this year could be very interesting.
I just hope that one aspect of the club this past nine years changes, and that is the habit of playing injured players at the expense of youth.

6 months only to turn around 120 years of non professionalism?

i think watters summed it up well. having a good culture isnt something you just work on and when you get there you can rest. its something you do minute to minute with the decisions and actions you make. if they do that and continue to do it we will have a good culture. the past does not matter only the moment they are in.

compare that to what ross lyon said last week about culture. to him its a day to day thing. i dont think he's fussed by it that much. just wants the results on the field. freo are the perfect fit for him.

we grew past ross. he did us a favor.

The club has improved but I would stil like to see a bit more size on a number of our players. To me blokes like Ray, Gram, Glibert, Polo, McEvoy, Montagna, Peake let the side down with their lack of upper body and strength. That filters through to not being able to hold your position in a contest or not being able to win a hard ball ! Obviously the players have to do a lot more running now but I still think there remains weak links within the club when it comes to doing whats required in the gym.

I think you're being a bit hard on some of these blokes calling them weak links in the club..

They arent marking players apart from McEvoy and some you mentioned are outside players. Others like Polo win the ball themselves. Every club has these type of players, its just we look at our own much more.

What you are basically saying is we havent had a good weights coach in the last 10 years. That would obviously be wrong. I would think the players are as big as they want or can get.

You gotta love pre seasons and the blind optimism that they bring. How are you measuring professionalism? Surely not on scales such as profit, premierships, drafting and the skills and experience of the coaching panel let alone it's record (which is currently zip). Maybe this time next year would be a good time to assess the peformance of the club. They have a lot to prove this year and I'm looking forward to see how they go about it.

Ten thousand "Attaboys" get destroyed by one "bad job".

Only takes one player to be a moron to bring it all down.

true
interesting to to listen to a discusssion on the 'Media' and ' sensitivity' this morning .. If i hadn't been in the car I would have asked which subjects get the ' senstivity' from the media, Collingwood subjects, or Essendon Subjects or Carlton subjects...... Majak would be wondering where the' sensitivity' is right now

Not so sure if Administration side of the Saints have turned a corner. Its mid February and our membership renewals for the Cheer Squadd are not out yet. Just spoke to the club and was advised that they did not know when the renewals would be mailed or how much they would be. The very polite lady in membership told me she has been instructed by the Club to tell us that they cant even give an estimated date for the Cheer Squad renewals to be mailed. Will they send out renewals before the finals??? TOC
