Gloves story in Age

Post: # 1190006Post Con Gorozidis »

Do any saints players wear gloves?
Dean Polo comes to mind. Does Kosi wear one?

Seems like they definitely help. Goodes and Cloke both used them last year.

This needs a blanket ban…

Keep it simple, no gloves, no player should be advantaged by equipment or gear IMO

What about boots?
What happens of somebody designs a boot which helps a player kick more accurately?
What about Jumpers?
Maybe some company who sponsors a particular Club will come up with some new material to make football jumpers out of that is cooler to wear.
etc.

Where does one draw the line?

They already have jumpers that keep players cooler…

Boots and jumpers have been used for 150 years, both are needed, gloves are not…

That said, advances in boot and jumper technology should be monitored

100% of players wear boots & 100% of players wear jumpers..

Less than 1% wear gloves.. An advancement in boots and jumpers etc aids all, with gloves it aids very few..
Will surely be regulated or banned..

So what happens if the Saints Jumper supplier invents some new fabric that makes players wearing jumpers out of it, faster, ungrabbable?

A fabric that is not avaialable to other jumper maufacturers and therefore not available to other Clubs
(think of the 'swimsuits' that created all those swimming world records)

The point I ma trying to make is that technology is moving at an astonishing rate adn people/companies are making breakthroughs in all sorts of performance improvement areas.

Why just pick on gloves?

The issue for me is not the 'enhanced improvement' but the availablility/unavailability to all who want to use them.

I agree as marking is a unique skill to Aussie Rules. No player should be able to wear a glove unless for an injury. Lets not go down the path where technology is responsible for improvements in the skill level of players. I'd rather see advancement in the natural ability of players, game plans etc.

Don't forget that a number of players wear gloves to protect broken hands.

A blanket ban could stop them from playing, or possibly have them play and do more damage.

Perhaps a player wearing a glove should not be allowed remove the glove to take their kick as the report says it makes kicking more difficult with a glove.

Maybe special consideration could be sought from an AFL doctor in these cases, in which case a standard 'medical' glove could be used.

Perhaps stopping an injured player from playing is a good thing anyway?

Who was it that played with a shin guard a few years ago to protect a leg injury? That was considered a risk to other players safety from memory.

Dean Polo does, doesn't he?

Kosi only wore won when he split the webbing on his hand.

Gloves should only be worn by players with a hand injury. They give players an unfair advantage, particularly when the ball is wet I should imagine.

But if they that good surely every marking forward would use them.

pluggs i think the issue is this very new glove. the nike vapour or something.
by all reports this new glove is pretty amazing and the fear is every fwd will be using it in the next year or two.

as for the argument above i would think the rule should be :

"and piece of equipment that provides unfair advantage" AND "that would result in a change in the traditional nature of the game."
medical expemPtions could apply.

do we want a game where everyone marks everything every time?

If you honestly think any type of glove would have that much bearing on marking that they would mark it all the time then you just arent following footy. There is a thing called punching the ball for a start as well as flooding, packs and ability. I doubt te new glove would make much difference at all but if it did all that would happen is every marking forward would wear it. It wont happen though as no glove could be that good with all the negatives against it.

i wouldnt have a clue until i tried it.
but word is these new gloves are very high tech. most catchers in nfl are wearing them.
lets wait and see - but you might be surprised.

Wear a glove, okay with me. It shows you have a mental weakness with your game. Make them keep it on at all times, none of this throwing it away while you have a set shot.

i agree with making them keep them on.
but if we wanted them banned, do a deal with nike so only st kilda can use them. the afl would ban it in a night.
if collingwood managed such a deal they'd give it a year or two.

nice one. the coaches asked the players to "try out the new gloves" when they were in the states.

the boys were just sending some pics beack to the coaching staff to show they were following instructions and still had their mind on the job. simple mistake really.
