Thanks for all of these mcadam05. What a great window into the past, and how St Kilda FC owned the suburb of St Kilda.
So many of those old sponsors were actually businesses IN St Kilda, and the mag was on-sale around the shopping centres of St Kilda.
That's when the VFL really was suburb vs suburb.
Amazing the different demographic waves that have gone through the suburb since.
The poor, the migrants, the arty crowd, and there have been the street pros and injectors.
Nowadays ? Well, it's all gone downhill.
I'm not talking about the Sav-Blanc CLK-130 set moving in, but there are far too many Essendon and Collingwood supporters!

There's some very good books out there about the History of the suburb one on the pubs and the other on Cinemas

not only did Mr McKechnie bring out a weekly Saints mag he also was the publicity manager for the victory theatre hence all the ads for them in the mag

This is the one with my Grandfather on the cover. His one and only senior game.
This is a page posted earlier in the thread where he is named in the reserves.
Apparently the week before that he was in the under 19's or similar.....
Went from underage to seniors in three weeks apparently.
Did not like the coach and left to win a comp B&F in the ESFL playing for Caulfield city. Ended up coming back and playing a heap of reserve games and acting as a scout in bush leagues. Only found this out tonight doing the family ring around....People always knew him at Moorabbin... Now I know why. He never talked about it.
I asked him many times why he only played one game, yet won so many awards away from the VFL....his response was "The coach was a boozer and club was like that as well..I didnt want to be a part of it". He was old school. Never took a drink in his life and was a vegetarian his whole life. Would have been strange back in the 30's.
Pretty good footballer though. I have three Best and Fairest medals here, one league B & F and two club. My cousins have a few more apparently.

Long, probably boring post coming up.....
I was very surprised when I saw Mcadam post the images at the start of this thread...I thought I had the only on in existence.
Years ago, my grandfather took them to the club. I think it was when they were trying to get the heritage museum off the ground. No one had seen one before. Then they didnt want to give it back of course, which still riles me. But anyhoo.
My grandfather was too bloody humble and quiet about his football career. Fact is that I know bugger all about it and its too late now to find out pretty much. I did the ring around to the famdamily last night about it. My mother and her sister.
Apparently my great grandfather was involved in the club around the 1900's. Not sure how or in what capacity, but both my aunt and mother said the same. Before their time of course, but it was common knowlege in the family. Some sort of board level. Was a local businessman. I didnt know any of that.
When I was a kid, I was the most interested in footy and he used to take me to every ground, every week. When I look back at it now, all these people would be chatting to him. Heaps of random crew. But it was always people approaching him. But that was back in the 80's. Different world now I guess. And he was always analytical. Rarely animated. Always just watching while the crowd and myself were going bananas.
I never knew he used to scout players for the club until last night. But apparently in the 40's and 50's he used to make trips to the bush leagues around Ballarat, Bendigo and Mildura looking for players.... Did not know that. I think it is the reason so many people knew him @ moorabbin.
He was good mates with Bill Mohr and they both worked at my great grandfathers printing business. My mum and aunt both remember him well. Was at both of their weddings. Was a good family friend apparently. I didnt know that either. Kept him goal less in a few district matches, which is why Mohr got him to train with St.Kilda.
He won Best and fairests for Brighton in the VFA and Caulfield City in the ESFL which was a breakaway league at the time. Plus two LEAGUE best and fairests in the ESFL on top of that. As I mentioned above, he didnt like the coach and drinking culture at the club at the time and just refused to be a part of it.
Was asked to play for Collingwood, Carlton, Richmond and Footscray. He didnt want to play for them though. Collingwood were a freaking powerhouse in that era so he must of been pretty good. My aunt said he couldnt face the prospect of playing for any other side.....That doesnt surprise me.
As I said, too bloody humble. Still, he was a fantastic Grandpa to me and my brother and sister. Ripping bloke. Always lots of fun and is one of the bigger role models in my life. If I end up half the man he was, then I am doing pretty well. Its not all that often I pull all this stuff out. At least this time I found out some more information.

The only one i have seen apart from the 3 i have , was held by Noel Gambetta son of former player Cyril "jazz legs" Gambetta a star of the 20's. and that was cut up and not in great nick
sidenote - If you went along too watch the team train at Moorabbin in 80's and 90's you would of seen Noel and his little group always there. Very Proud of his father
