Gary Ablett snr could have been a saint, we should have grabbed him when we got Geoff..... he had just walked on hawthorn....and taking him would have also got us junior 20 years later....
Swallow was interviewed in Perth by the saints in 2003 as a 17yo he was overlooked with our last pick for Phil Raymond....he went in 2004 to north...

Swallow was taken in the 2005 Nat Draft at DP 43 - Saints had traded DP 17 for Watts
Must have been 2004 then that Swallow should have been taken as a bottom age player.

I don't know what you're smoking but we took Raymond at pick 63 after Swallow had already been picked by North. That was 2005.BigMart wrote:

G. Ablett Snr. Used to go to Geelong games sometimes just to watch him play. Saw him beat West Coast off his own boot at the WACA one day. Mesmerising. And he was tough. That same day he ran full steam into a point post about fifty metres from me and you could here the 'thwump' loud and clear. He went down like a sack of spuds. Got straight back up, shook himself, wandered around a bit and took an absolute screamer and kicked a goal about two minutes later.
Leigh Matthews was awesome and I used to enjoy watching Bartlett as well.

My brother was captain of Kyabram at the time, and the teams meet in the GF. Tat were going for back to back and the Ky Bombers were looking for their first flag in 21 years.
Hawkey was lined up at the first bounce and got crunched badly. He went off minutes later with a hip injury and didn't come back on. Ky were reduced to 17 men in the second qtr yet still overpowered Tat to win by 10 goals!!
My brother, Tony 'Rusty' McDonell, was named BOG on the day. There is a nice photo of him and Hawkey at the coin toss before the game; the coin was tossed by Stephen Tingay, who was playing for Melbourne at the time, and was an ex Shepp United player.
Sorry to dribble on but it brought back some good memories! I've watched the vid off that game a few times and its good value.

I'm glad to see that some others share my man crush on A McLeod.
I reckon he's a bit of an underrated figure, probably to do with the whole AFL world's obsession with stats (not that McLeod's stats are too dusty, but there are other lesser talents who have better ones). In terms of his ability to turn a game on its head (or, as the years wore on, at least keep his underperfoming team in games long after they should have been put away), I would rate him ahead of the likes of Voss, Buckley and Ricciuto or, more recently, Rioli, G Ablett Jnr or Bartel. I can't bring myself to say he was better than Rob Harvey, so I'll say he was on a par.

We were going to take swallow as a 17yo in 2004 (Sweeney) but overlooked him.....he was not drafted as a bottom ager......he was unable to be rookied in 2004 due to age restrictions with rookies, he got drafted the following year at43 by north....
If not for a tip on Sweeney we would have grabbed him in 04 with our last kick.....his query, kicking skills....
