One finally went our way
As a St.Kilda supporter, I have watched with much annoyance as players left our club to go elsewhere and become great players.
Stewart to Richmond, Perovic to Carlton, Greene to Hawthorn and of course many of us are worried that Walsh to Sydney could be another one.
However, it occured to me that we at least have got one back and that is Stephne Milne.
Basically rejected by Sheedy at Essendon, he came to us and has become one of the great small forwards of the comp, and one of the best all time.
500+ goals is a very good return for someone like him, and except for an unbelievable bounce of the ball, could become part of folklore with one Barry breen at this club.
Hopefully he'll get another chance at that in 2012.

Yes Milney is a standout.
You could also say Andrew Thompson.
For while we had a look at him first, IIRC the Dogs then had a sniff before we got him back again.
If Hamill's and Penny's knees had not given out we most likely would have gained a lot more joy from both.

We were indeed fortunate.
If I recall correctly Essendon had been caught systematically cheating the salary cap between 1992 and 1996 and were punished - one component of that punishment meant that they could not hang onto Milne in 1999 (I think).
The Saints reserves had been beaten by Essendon reserves that year and Milney was a major contributor despite his youth and diminuitive stature. The Saints decided to take a punt on the uncontracted player. Within a year he was elevated to the senior list.
He has never looked back. Nor have we.

Don't forget the G Train from west coast even Nicky Winmar could be considered after west coast over looked him in their first year

I thought it was more due to them having like 5 small forwards atm, and milne was a rookie player that wasn't considered that speacial,

I don't think this thread has anything to do with mentality or image...talk about a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong bow.......Cairnsman wrote:No wonder our club has such a hard time trying to shake its loser mentality and image. This thread feels like "line in the sand" stuff.

Re: One finally went our way
bit of a difference in that stewart, perovic and grreene were all very good players and anybody with an ounce of football nouse would have moved heaven and hell to ensure that they stayed sainters.....but agree with you on the milne thing......3rd generation saint wrote:As a St.Kilda supporter, I have watched with much annoyance as players left our club to go elsewhere and become great players.

The Schneiderman will have racked up 100 games for us by the middle of this season barring injuries.st_Trav_ofWA wrote:Dempster stepped it up big time in '11 ... Farren Ray is 100% on the player he was at the dogs ....
Other successes that spring to mind... Tim Pekin - Fitzroy, Matthew Young- Hawthorn, Paul Morwood from Sydney, Peter McConville ex Carlton and Paul Callery from Melbourne.
But certainly we've given away a lot more than we got... I'd add Joel Smith 58 games with us and 163 with Hawthorn and Matthew Lappin 55 with us and 196 with Carlton to the list of players who got away.

Does BJ qualify because that is one that really worked out quite well considering he was supposed to go to Carlton. lol...
