Gliders and Sliders
OK I'm bored and am going to look into the oracle and try to predict the players who will rise and the guys that will fall out of the regular team. I'm interested in hearing who you think will rise up the rankings.
Gliders:
Kosi- full preseason, slimmed down, less time planted as a forward more ruck, I expect him to be back in our top 10 players by seasons end.
Gilbert- Free of controversy and embraced for his creativity Gilbert will become that running tall back that will carve up the AFL.
Steven- Lenny let's him get his freedom back and is let be the little gun we expect.
Cripps- Could be Ledger also, two of the most exciting recruits we've had for a while, injury free should demand a spot and might get some time on the ball also.
Honourable mentions:
Rooey
Geary
Ledger
Stanley
Armo
Sliders:
Dempster- From a steady rise to a less valued player with his one dimensional game style not so popular with the new coaching panel.
Ray- Pushed for spots one of Ray or Gram make way for a newbie.
Blake- left out after completing his 200th so another can fill his spot barring injury.
I'm hoping that we will have most of our list in the Gliders by the end of the season and is based on nothing of any value. Have a go it's pretty hard.

Agree with you on Rooey but why Dempster? There are one or two others that might struggle next year and i don't want to get blasted but I doubt it will be Sean.plugger66 wrote:Main upside, Rooy by a mile and the main slider IMO is Dempster by a fair way.

Hope you are right but I think the way we played under RL certainly suited his game. I dont expect huge change but enough to make it hard for him.SaintPav wrote:Agree with you on Rooey but why Dempster? If Watters thinks we are a team good enough not to have at least one stopper, he is either in for a rude awakening or we are.plugger66 wrote:Hope you are right but I think the way we played under RL certainly suited his game. Had to make up someone who will slide and he was as good as any. Otherwise I would look like I'm Mr Rose coloured glasses.SaintPav wrote:Agree with you on Rooey but why Dempster? Dempster still doesn't excite me even though he has become a very solid player. Just his lack of on field personality I guess.
He is the antisaint a characterless guy who wears his heart so far from his sleeve he could be a sociopath.
I come from an era when guys like Plugger, Max and G train were so emotionally fragile you could read their faces.
I actually like all the sliders I named really just having to invent some reasoning.

What you think about the guy personally is irrelevant. Who cares if he doesn't smile. He trains and prepares like a pro and the coach will love him.gringo wrote:Had to make up someone who will slide and he was as good as any. Also, just because the Pies didn't tag, it doesn't mean that Watters won't.
My sliders are;
Raph
Stanley (to disappoint again) and
Lenny (sorry).

Not sure Geary has any upside than being a good player at Sandy.

I think we can expect a better '12 than '11 from our entire core group of guns:
Roo: '11 his 2nd worst season ever (his worst was his 1st.)
Lenny: If he plays more than 1 1/2 games he will have had a better year.
BJ: That he was below his best in '11 is common knowledge.
Monty: Wasn't at all bad in '11 but is capable of much better
Fish: See "Monty."
The exception to the rule is NDS, who had a stellar season. A 20% improvement from these six alone equates to a much better side.
Gliders:
Ben McEvoy: Primed to become an a-grade ruckman.
Jack Steven: Primed to become an a-grade midfielder.
Sam Gilbert: '11 to become an aberration.
Justin Koszitske: Not based on stats but just on a hunch.
Sliders:
Raph Clarke: His time has come and gone.
Steven Milne: Will still be in our best 22 and a club leader but he surely can't be as good in '12 as he was in '11.
Sean Dempster: He was perfectly suited to the old game plan, but methinks he won't be suited so much to the new one.
Clinton Jones: See "Sean Dempster."

I can't see Dempster sliding at all actually, he's one of our few hard men. I don't see scotty going for a team of free wheelers and interestingly he was regarded by plenty of the media as having a major impact this year.
I really hope people are right about Gilbo but unless someone teaches him how to kick it's going to be boomerang time.

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

Got a feeling about Milne struggling to have the same impact for another year too, especially with Saad etc. taking some of his crumbs. Peake is another I worry may lose direction again. He looks like footy isn't his sole focus.
Dempster still has suss disposal but amazing commitment. I'm just thinking of a gu who was up that may suffer under a new coaching style.
I actually think Polo could be a glider too, has a pretty low starting point so lots of up.

I think if you're looking at a change in game plan to have more pace and forward options you need the muscle to compliment that. Lenny's back and thank god but we don't have a guarantee he'll get up straight away. Polo is an interesting one but actually his disposal is closer to what you have discribed in being very suspect. Dempster is actually a very good kick probably more a descision making thing but even that seems to have improved. Dempster seems to survive on consistency and improves with continued game time. You can't have all flair and no genuine grunt and stability.gringo wrote:Got a feeling about Milne struggling to have the same impact for another year too, especially with Saad etc. taking some of his crumbs. I'm hoping Ledger can take the next step but after a major op who knows.

It looks like footy isn't Peaked sole focus? Why because he surfs..
I hate this 'isn't committed enough' 'didn't wok hard enough' crap from the outside looking in. That's more than a slap in the face for a footballer, than simply saying you don't think he is good enough, which is my dislike for Peake.
obviously some players do work harder than others. if they all had lenny's workrate, for instance, we'd have won eleven flags in the last ten years.Spinner wrote:I hate this 'isn't committed enough' 'didn't wok hard enough' crap from the outside looking in.
but i agree that it's probably hard to tell from the outside.

Everyone has different workrates.
But it not as simple as all the players that succeed worked the hardest, and the ones that failed didn't work.
Talent and luck play a massive probably equal part. Some would argue that this is biggest separator between success.
