Poor Old Doug Booth

Post: # 1183231Post mcadam05 »

There's some Weg Cartoons going under the hammer at Leski's in February , A couple with a St Kilda theme this one caught my eye

Does anyone Remember that Day out at VFL Park Where Dougie had a kick to kick with a stray Dog?

I think it was at Geelong - he was coming off the ground and Barks was going on.

I was there and I'm sure it was VFL Park.

No idea who we were playing though.

Nah it was Brian Booth.............. just scored a century.
And if I recollect correctly Doug Booth was in the ABC booth broadcasting the game. :P

It was definitely VFL Park. Pretty sure it was against the filth.

This from the Herald Sun:

"The Queen’s Birthday clash between St Kilda and Collingwood in 1978 drew a bumper crowd of 72,669 and at least one dog to VFL Park. We know there was a dog because a nondescript black canine made its way on to the ground during the second half. The intruder caught the attention of Saints defender Doug Booth, who tried to kick the dog back into the stands. Being the no-frills defender he was, Booth wasn’t the most reliable kick and unsurprisingly he missed making contact but his attempt was enough to convince the interloper to beat a hasty retreat. The attempted kick predictably drew the ire of animal welfare."

Perhaps he did it more than once.

That 1978 clip shows how good George Young was....Malarkey was no mug. And Roo could learn a thing or two about his kicking style, and the careful deliberate way he dropped the ball on to his foot.

Glad he missed the dog. Trying to kick a dog is a low/ sick act.

We had a bloke from Beaufort - Gary Lofts - came down as a Full Back - he was a beautiful kick. Was to short height wise to hold it down and ended up going forward and kicked a heap of points that day. Would have won if he had of kicked straight.

Anyway I thought it was down at Geelong.

Since when has the Herald Sun been reliable.

You would be better off reading "Heart Balm" in "The Truth" if you want the whole story.

I saw you last night on the BBC in Great Expectations. I would have thought you were much older.

BTW. The game was definitely against Collingwood. I knew a lot of Pies fans in those days and they tended to know two Saints players. Trevor Barker and that bloke who kicked the dog at Waverley.

I'll bet he didn't kick them!
