Not a big problem. As long as he can get alot of the running done still then good. Has all pre season and season to use the footys.

It's not the actual hand, just 2 metacarpals. So it shouldn't be a too long a stint away from ball-related stuff.

Sounds like as good as it can be. Recovery will depend on the type of break and which metacarpals.
I've seen them a couple as gross compound fractures (where the broken bone penetrates through the skin) It is difficult to comfort a kid telling him, "It'll be OK"while your gut is churning at the sight.
I am still hurting from 71;

Yes, in lamens terms he actually did break his hand. The matacarpals run between your knuckles and wrist.
